She currently serves Trinity Methodist Church in Wilmette, IL and is Director of the Chicago Bronze Handbell Ensemble. We have three grown children. Rachel is a single adult of 35 years, a daycare worker, and active in the choir and small group ministry of our former church in Evanston. Megan is 33 and a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. In October 2010, she married Harout Katerjian. She currently serves the La Canada Presbyterian Church (Los Angeles) as Director of Missions and Adult Formation. Derek is 29, recently married to Natalie, and is a professional cellist. He also plays bass guitar in the worship band at our former church in Evanston. My Statement of Faith: My statement of faith is the song of my life. It is a song of deep gratitude to God my Creator who reached down to claim me years ago during my first year of college. It is a song of heart- felt joy for my Good Shepherd who has led me all the way—in my marriage, parenting, and ministry. It is a song of love for my Savior who has met me in the fires of adversity, failure and discouragement when He lifted me up, and planted my feet upon the Rock once again. It is a song of wonder at the ministry of the Holy Spirit in my life who has given me “the word timely spoken,” again and again, when I was discouraged, confused, or about to step off a cliff without knowing it. Through God’s Word, a trusted counselor, or an insight while praying, this internal Spirit of Jesus has been like “streams of living water” flowing through my heart and mind. So Yes!: I believe in God the Father, Almighty Maker of heaven and earth. This awesome God, whose image is both masculine and feminine (Genesis 1:27), created us after God’s own image. In God’s amazing grace, when we are re-created in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17), we are given back the opportunity to be molded into that image, if we just hold on to Jesus. But that gets ahead of the Story. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Savior because I have been deeply flawed by Sin, through generations and generations of family and culture that have fiercely, foolishly, arrogantly claimed their independence from the Great Lover of our Souls. Thus our lives have become but a shadow of what our Creator intended. Our minds have become darkened, our emotions now drive us with fear, and our spirits resist God or anyone else who would tell us what to do. But thanks be to God who sent us a Savior. In some way, far beyond my understanding, His “suffering under Pontius Pilate” effected forgiveness of my sins and release from my captivity to this darkness. And Yes! I believe this Jesus to be the only Savior for the whole world and that, at last, all people will see that He is the final fulfillment of the deepest hopes and dreams of all humanity. And Yes!, I believe in the Holy Spirit. Without the gift of God’s Spirit to live within me, I could never have believed the Gospel; I could never repent of my sins; I could never do the works of Christ in the world; I could never rise above my human limitations; I could never overcome my fears to accomplish those things Christ now calls me to do. I believe in the holy catholic Church. It is indeed “through the faith of others that our faith is kindled” (Archbishop William Temple, 1942). We find that contagious faith in the Church wherever we are around the world. There we also find the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, which are the special means of God’s grace flowing into our lives. In the holy catholic Church, we also are nurtured in the other primary instrument of God’s grace, the Holy Scriptures of Old and New Testaments. I believe these scriptures can be trusted completely to lead us into all Truth, to refresh our flagging spirits, and to hear God addressing us personally. By the Holy Spirit, the scriptures become the very word of God to encourage, guide, rebuke, correct, and inspire with the joy of a new Life. And I believe in the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. I can look forward to my life and personality being preserved beyond death, and made perfect at last, along with others who give themselves over willingly to God’s judgment and grace. Christ’s bodily resurrection is the one great sign that was given, that this Hope is one we can count on. And more than this, because Jesus has shown us that there is a Life to come beyond death, we are to cultivate our expectation by being engaged in the world, but not clinging to it. The old Gospel jingle is true: “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.” Amen. .
