    The Rechtschreibreform – A Lesson in Linguistic Purism Nils Langer, University of Bristol The Rechtschreibreform – A Lesson in Linguistic Purism 15 The Rechtschreibreform – A Lesson in Linguistic Purism1 Nils Langer The German spelling reform of 1998 generated an amazing amount of (mostly negative) reaction from the German public. Starting with a general overview of the nature of linguistic purism and the history of German orthography, this article presents a wide range of opinions of the spelling reform. The data is mostly taken from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, either in the form of newspaper articles or letters to the editor, showing that the reform is rejected by untrained linguists (folk) for various political and pseudo-linguistic reasons, which, however, have in common a fundamenal misconception of the nature and status of both orthography in general and the 1998 spelling reform in particular. This articles argues, therefore, that the vast majority of objections to the spelling reform is not based on linguistic issues but rather based on a broadly politically defined conservative view of the world. On 1 August 2000 one of the leading German broadsheets, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), returned to using the old ‘bewährten’ spelling rules after one year of working with the new rules, arguing that the new rules had not achieved what they set out to do. The FAZ is on its own in this assessment, no other German newspaper followed its lead, and only two intellectual societies, the Hochschullehrerverband and the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, returned to the old spelling after the FAZ’s decision.

HOW TO DEAL WITH NAZI-LOOTED ART AFTER CORNELIUS GURLITT Phillip Hellwege* The Nazi regime collapsed seventy years ago; still today, we are concerned about the restitution of Nazi-looted art. In recent decades, the public debate in Germany has often focused on restitution by public museums and other public bodies. The recent case of Cornelius Gurlitt has raised the issue of restitution of Nazi-looted art by private individu- als and private entities. German law is clear about this issue: property based claims are time-barred after thirty years. Thus, according to Ger- man law, there is little hope that the original owners will have an en- forceable claim for the restitution of such art. Early in 2014, the Bavarian State Government proposed a legislative reform of the Ger- man Civil Code. The draft bill aims to re-open property based claims for restitution. The draft bill is a direct reaction to the case of Cornelius Gurlitt. This article analyzes the availability of property based claims for the restitution of Nazi-looted art under German law and critically as- sesses the Bavarian State Government's draft bill. My conclusion is not encouraging for the original owners of Nazi-looted art. Even though the Bavarian draft bill breeds hope among Nazi victims and their heirs, who are led to believe that they now have enforceable claims against the present possessors of what was theirs, the truth is that many original owners have forever lost ownership of their art. It came to reflect not only the antisemitism of National Socialist ideology but it also significantly altered the original meaning of certain words. For example, the Nazi government introduced new words or imposed new meanings on old words in order to achieve the objective of camouflaging many of its policies, including the genocide. The results of this tampering with the language became so characteristic of the Hitler period that the German of that time has come to be identified in everyday usage as well as in the literature as "Nazi German." Many of its features that were associated with the genocide ceased to exist after the end of Nazi rule, others have survived into present usage. In order to establish how this vocabulary of genocide has been recorded in or omitted from German reference works, we have traced a few terms through dictionaries of pre-Nazi and post-Nazi vintage. The results give an idea of how a nation like Germany deals with its darkest chapter in history in its standard dictionaries. _________________________________________ It is commonplace observation to say that living languages change and evolve.     New Words for the Duden! Kathrin Kunkel-Razum Bibliographisches Institut GmbH [email protected] Abstract A new printed edition of the Rechtschreibduden (Duden's Orthographic Dictionary (Duden)), the prestigious German language dictionary, is published every three or four years. The past five or six editions have boasted approximately 5,000 newly added lemmas each (the 27th edition, with 145,000 lemmas, is the most recent), and since 1996, the year of the “Rechtschreibreform” (national spelling reform), public response to each new edition has focused primarily on these new additions. Once a word is included in the Rechtschreibduden, it is considered to have become officialized. There are people who wonder whether words that are not included exist, although even its online version offers an additional 100,000 lemmas. What then are the criteria applied by the Duden’s editorial staff when deciding which new words to include? Which sources are used? What is the editors’ position in the ongoing discussion about the – arguably excessive – use of Anglicisms in the German language and the addition of terms and grammatical adaptions related to or dictated by political correctness? How about the ratio of new entries in the printed edition of the Rechtschreibduden as opposed to its online version, and what are the procedures for inclusion? And finally, on what grounds are words deleted from the dictionary? In this paper I will refer to these issues and, with regard to future editions, I will also talk about which new sources the Duden will have to consider and work with to remain the predominant dictionary of the German (standard) language.

Wagner Berlin University of Technology (TUB), German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) and Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin, Germany This article analyzes differences in naming between East and West Germany. After World War II, Germany was split by the allied forces. Two Germanies emerged: the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Demo- cratic Republic (GDR). The country’s division lasted about forty years (1949– 1989), a time span in which vastly different geo-political frameworks — Eastern bloc versus Western bloc — shaped people’s lives and eventually Downloaded by [FU Berlin] at 04:21 13 September 2017 their name choices as well. The results of this complex relationship are addressed here with the following questions: to what extent can different naming patterns and name preferences be observed in the two parts of divided Germany, regardless of their common language and cultural heri- tage? Can differences in taste be identified, and how did these differences develop over time? These questions are answered here using the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP). The SOEP offers the rare opportunity of examining patterns of occurrence of first names among a representative sample of 56,000 individuals born since 1900. Moreover, this study includes a wide range of variables revealing the social and economic backgrounds of the “name givers”: the parents.

American scholars have long shown a tendency to examine the immigrant experience from the moment the immigrants set foot in the New World. Historians in other fields have begun to realize the importance of drawing historical connections that go beyond the borders of the United States. However, scholars studying German immigration to the United States have in large part failed to embrace this transnational methodology. Recent works of transnational history have demonstrated that by making connections to events that occurred outside of the United States, historians can JDLQDIXOOHUXQGHUVWDQGLQJRIWKHIRUFHVWKDWVKDSHGWKHQDWLRQ¶VGHYHORSPHQW A series of German settlement societies worked to create a new Germany in the frontier state of Missouri during the early decades of the nineteenth century. By examining these societies connections will be made between political events occurring in the German-speaking states of Europe and expansion into the American West. It will be demonstrated that events across the Atlantic Ocean, events which fed a sense of nationalism that had been simmering since the middle decades of the eighteenth century, had an effect on the state of Missouri that is visible to this day.
