Canada West Quarterfinal: Calgary at Fraser Valley (Feb. 23, 2012 at Envision Athletic Centre, Abbotsford, B.C.) STIFLING DEFENCE GIVES CASCADES GAME 1 WIN

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades put up an impressive defensive performance in the second half, holding the Calgary Dinos to just 14 points after halftime to take a 63-43 Game 1 win in the teams' best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series Thursday night.

The Dinos came out strong and opened by scoring the first seven points of the game, UFV scored its first ever home playoff points off a pair of free throws from Tessa Klassen and went on a six point run to climb back into the game. The Dinos would respond by going on another six point run to lead by seven points after the first quarter. The Cascades defense kicked in starting with the second quarter and held Calgary to 24 points the rest of the way. The offense started to click as well and the Cascades went into the intermission up by three points and a three point basket by Aieisha Luyken at the buzzer.

The second half belonged to the home team as they held Calgary to 14 second half points and outscored their visitors by 17 points. The Cascade defense shut down Calgary's high powered offense and prevented the Dinos from the fast break offense that was successful for them in the first quarter. UFV shot 37 percent from the floor in the second half and converted 11 of 12 free throws to earn their first home victory.

The Cascades were led by Klassen, with a team high 13 points. Luyken added 12 and Sarah Wierks 10 points. Sarah Wierks and Courtney Bartel each pulled down a team high 6 rebounds, as UFV out rebounded Calgary 39 to 36 for the game.

The Dinos were led by Jenna Kaye with a game-high 16-point performance. Jessica Franz added 14 points. Franz and Kaye led Calgary with 7 rebounds each.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series goes Friday night at the Envision Athletic Centre, with tip-off at 7 p.m. MT. CanadaWest.tv will have live coverage.

The Dinos host the 2012 CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 March 17-19 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Canada West: Saskatchewan at Calgary (Jan. 14, 2012 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) BIG SECOND QUARTER LIFTS HUSKIES OVER DINOS

CALGARY – The used a 14-point scoring advantage in the second quarter to run past the Calgary Dinos 80-72 Saturday night, sweeping their weekend series in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Trailing 20-17 after the first quarter, an eight-point outburst by the Huskies' Kabree Howard and a solid defensive performance gave Saskatchewan a 23-9 advantage in the second 10 minutes, holding Calgary to just four field goals on 13 attempts and turning the ball over seven times.

Facing an 11-point deficit at halftime, the Dinos came back strong to win the second half 43-40, but the second quarter proved pivotal as the Huskies improved to 7-4 on the season, moving ahead of the Dinos in the playoff race by dropping Calgary to 7-5.

While it was Howard that dominated the second quarter with eight of her 13 points on the night, fifth-year guard Katie Miyazaki poured it on in the second half for the defending national finalist Huskies, recording a big-time 25-point, 16-rebound stat line and finishing just two assists shy of a triple-double on the night. Miyazaki, who played 38 minutes on the night for the Huskies, did most of her damage after the break, scoring 15 and rebounding 10 in a second half where she didn't once leave the floor.

Freshman Dalyce Emmerson also had a double-double night for the Huskies, scoring 13 and adding 11 rebounds – seven of which were of the offensive variety.

Fifth-year point guard Jenna Kaye got on the double-double wagon for the Calgary Dinos, leading her team with 12 rebounds to go with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Jessica Franz held the scoring lead for Calgary with 17, while Tamara Jarrett and Megan Lang contributed a dozen points apiece.

For the second night in a row, the Huskies got significant scoring from their bench, outscoring the Dinos 23-9 in that department after picking up 34 bench points in Friday night's 79-72 win. Calgary held the edge in field goal percentage at 45.5 against 42, while neither team shot particularly well from the line: the Dinos made six of only nine opportunities (66.7%), while Saskatchewan shot just 59 per cent, going 13-for-22.

Saskatchewan returns home to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and UBC Okanagan Heat next weekend at the PAC in Saskatoon, while the Dinos will look to get back into the win column as they head south to face the Pronghorns (2-10) in Lethbridge. Tip-off goes at 6 p.m. Jan. 20-21, with the games broadcast live on CanadaWest.tv.

Calgary returns home Jan. 27-28 to face the Alberta Pandas. The Dinos host the 2012 CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 March 17-19 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Canada West: Saskatchewan at Calgary (Jan. 13, 2012 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) DINOS PRESS, BUT CAN’T GET PAST DIVISIONAL RIVALS

CALGARY – Despite spotting their hosts an 8-0 advantage in the first three minutes of the game, the No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies quickly righted the ship and improved to 6-4 on the season with a 78-72 win over the Calgary Dinos Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Eager to prove their competitiveness with one of the nation's top programs, the Dinos came out guns a blazing from the opening tip-off, and for a time it seemed like nothing could go wrong for the hosts. Jessica Franz, Jenna Kaye, and Alex Cole paced the Dinos out to the quick eight-point lead in a stretch that saw the Huskies throw up just one shot attempt – but a nice inside feed by veteran Katie Miyazaki to freshman Dalyce Emmerson in the paint got Saskatchewan on the board and they never looked back.

Lisa Thomaidis' crew responded with a 17-5 run and held a four-point lead after 10 minutes. That lead stretched to six at the half, but the third quarter is where the Huskies salted it away. The Huskies put up 26 points out of the break, taking a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter – a lead the Dinos fought valiantly to chip away at, but one that proved insurmountable in the end.

The Huskies, who led by as many as 14 late in the third quarter, saw their advantage slip to just five points with two minutes to play. A quick lay-up by Kabree Howard made the cushion seven, and with the Dinos forced to foul, the Huskies made just enough free throws to keep it interesting but still keep the Dinos at arm's length. A conventional three-point play by Tamara Jarrett brought Calgary within four with just 18 seconds remaining, but Howard salted it away with two more singles to make the final 78-72.

The Huskies shot the lights out in the second half, making 14 of their 19 field goal tries for a sensational 73.7 per cent efficiency. That sparked them to an overall 54.5 per cent on the night, against just under 42 for Calgary.

Emmerson, the freshman phenom, posted the lone double-double of the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds, 10 of which came off the defensive glass. Miyazaki and Kiera Lyons led the way for Saskatchewan with 15 points apiece, but the Huskies got balanced scoring from their entire line-up. Five players cracked double digits, with Kelsey Trusrud's 12 and Howard's 11 following up the threesome of Miyazaki, Lyons, and Emmerson. The bench contributed 34 of the Huskies' 78 points.

Calgary, meanwhile, falls to 7-4 with the loss. The Dinos got a solid 16 points from Cole, whose court time was limited to just 23 minutes because of early foul trouble. Jenna Kaye added 13 for the home side, while Franz and Tamara Jarrett each added 10. Kiersten Hilton finished just shy of a second digit, scoring nine points in 19 minutes of action.

Franz and Kaye were the Dinos' leading rebounders, collecting five apiece on the night.

The two teams renew acquaintances Saturday night in the rematch, with tip off set for 6 p.m. MT in the Jack, live on CanadaWest.tv.

The Dinos host the 2012 CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 March 17-19 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Canada West: UBC at Calgary (Nov. 26, 2011 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) DINOS SHOOT DOWN ‘BIRDS IN OT THRILLER

CALGARY – Led by a sterling effort by fifth-year guard Megan Lang, the unranked University of Calgary Dinos improved to 6-2 on the season with an electrifying 78-75 overtime upset of the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, the UBC Thunderbirds, Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The big win followed up another tight contest that ended in the Dinos' favour, Friday's 69-64 win over the . The weekend marks the first time in since the 2000-01 season that the Dinos have swept a weekend against either UBC, Victoria, or a combination of the two teams.

Lang was stellar in every sense of the word for the Dinos, scoring 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 5-for-7 from long range. She added a game-high four offensive rebounds and scored five of Calgary's 11 points in overtime.

“In everything we do on both ends of the floor, Megan is the glue,” said Dinos head coach Shawnee Harle. “I have so much trust and faith that she's going to find a way to get it done, and on nights that she doesn't score, she still defends and rebounds. She played like an experienced, fifth-year kid tonight.”

“I've been feeling a big win coming for a couple of weeks now, and I thought beating Victoria last night was a big win too,” said Harle, whose team will host the 2012 CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 March 17-19 in the Jack Simpson Gym. “Both teams battled and scrapped us very hard. UBC is a very, very good team, and our margin of error in order to beat them was very, very small. Full credit to our players for battling right to the end. We still had some juice in the tank and were able to push the ball against them at the end.”

The game was back and forth all night, with 13 tie scores and a dozen lead changes in an entertaining affair. The night opened with both teams on fire, combining for 34 shots in the first quarter alone – a 10-minute span with ended with Calgary leading 26-23. The offence cooled down from there, with Calgary maintaining a 39-36 lead at the half.

UBC outscored the Dinos 16-12 in the third to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but an early three-pointer by Ashley Hirons gave Calgary back the lead. The Dinos opened the fourth with an 11-2 run that put them up by eight points, but the Thunderbirds wouldn't go away and continued to chip away at the lead. A jumper down low by Kristjana Young with just under two minutes to go brought UBC within two points, and a trey from Alex Vieweg Gave UBC the lead with 80 seconds to play.

Tamara Jarrett hit from 15 feet to tie it up at 67 and, while the Dinos had two chances to inbound the ball on the offensive baseline for the game-winning shot, UBC's defence held fast to send the game to extra time.

In overtime, the Dinos opened with another run, this time 9-2 to make it 76-69. A pair of free throws by Young brought the Thunderbirds back within one at 76-75, but Jenna Kaye iced with win with two from the stripe of her own in the final seconds.

Young was sensational herself, recording 31 points on the night for UBC. Leigh Stansfield added 16, while Vieweg's 11 and 10 from Zara Huntley also contributed for UBC.

For the Dinos, Kaye added another 15 points to wrap up a solid weekend for her, adding nine rebounds and seven assists on the night. Hirons hit three clutch three-balls to wind up with nine points, while Jarrett added eight.

The game was the final regular season contest of 2011 for both squads as they enter the Christmas break. Conference play re-starts Jan. 6-7, 2012 when UBC hosts Alberta and Saskatchewan while Calgary visits Fraser Valley and Trinity Western.

Canada West: Calgary at Regina (Nov. 19, 2011 at CKHS, Regina, Sask.) DINOS PUT UP VALIANT EFFORT IN LOSS TO No. 1 COUGARS

REGINA – The visiting Calgary Dinos came out strong on Saturday, but the top-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team recovered with a strong second quarter and cruised to an 84-67 win in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Calgary led by as many as 11 points late in the first quarter and held double-digit leads in the second as well, but the Cougars went on a massive 28-3 run to turn a 10-point deficit into a 15-point lead.

The Dinos cut into the lead and got to within three points two minutes into the fourth quarter after a pair of Tamara Jarrett free throws, but the Cougars scored 14 of the game's next 16 points to put the game out of reach.

Regina's backcourt duo of Michelle Clark and Joanna Zalesiak both scored 19 points for the Cougars, with Clark going 5-for-13 from downtown and Zalesiak adding nine assists, six steals, and six rebounds. Lindsay Ledingham scored 15 points and added a game-high eight rebounds, while Brittany Read had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Jenna Kaye led all players with 21 points for the Dinos and tied Ledingham with eight boards. Jarrett scored 17 for Calgary, while Alex Cole chipped in with 15.

Calgary, which came into the weekend undefeated, falls to 4-2 on the season and will host Victoria and UBC next weekend. The Cougars (5-0) will hit the road next weekend for games against conference newcomer UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers.

Canada West: Calgary at Regina (Nov. 18, 2011 at CKHS, Regina, Sask.) THIRD QUARTER COUGARS SURGE SINKS DINOS

REGINA– The No. 1 ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team held a slim four-point lead at halftime, but a big third quarter powered the Cougars to a 69-54 win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Regina clamped down on the defensive side of the ball in that third quarter, limiting the Dinos to just two points over the first five and a half minutes and outscoring Calgary by a 21-8 margin to take a healthy lead into the fourth. The Cougars kept the double-digit lead down the stretch to secure their fourth victory in as many Canada West games this season.

“We gutted out a win on a night we didn't shoot the ball especially well,” Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. “We did a great job defensively in the third quarter and that allowed us to stretch the lead, and Joanna (Zalesiak) put a lot of pressure on their defence all game long.”

Lindsay Ledingham had a big double-double for the Cougars with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Joanna Zalesiak was all over the box score with 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Michelle Clark added 10 points for Regina, eight of which were scored in the first five minutes of the first quarter.

The loss was the first of the Canada West schedule for the Dinos, who fall to 4-1 with the setback. Jenna Kaye and Tamara Jarrett both had 13 points to lead Calgary, while Kaye added a team-high eight rebounds. A lack of efficiency from the free throw line plagued the Dinos, as the visitors went to the free throw line 23 times but were successful on just eight of them.

Neither team was especially good from the field, as Regina shot 35% and Calgary checked in at 34%. The Dinos had 27 turnovers in the loss, while the Cougars ended up with 23.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

NOTES: Regina and Alberta (5-0) remain the only Canada West undefeated teams ... Calgary never led in this game, and an early 2-2 knot after a Jarrett jumper was the only tie score of the contest.
