Some were less supportive. Claudius’ mother, Antonia, and grandmother, Livia, repeatedly criticized his efforts; he could not write as frankly as he wished. Thus warned, Claudius left in his final version the assassination and its immediate aftermath, but omitted everything that 1 happened in the civil wars that followed: an eloquent silence. This book is in one sense an effort to recover what Claudius left out and why. Its reader will have to face up to the killing squads, the land confiscations, the famine, the propaganda, the agonizing dilemmas of these years. But I have not set out to write the kind of political narrative Claudius would have produced. For if the emperor has been one inspiration, another has been Vergil, whose first and ninth Eclogues exemplify how civil war swept through the lives of ordinary Italians during Claudius’ missing years. My work too aims to retrieve the men and women who fought and endured the bloody struggles that beset the Roman world under the triumvirate of Mark Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus. It is all too easy in writing about these years to focus only on high politics and constitutional questions, and the results become depressingly top-heavy. -

Beneath each statue an inscription was appended. Many of these inscriptions, known also as elogia, have survived. They record the name, magistracies held, and a brief account of the achievements of the individual. The reasons why these inscriptions were included in the Forum is the focus of this thesis. This thesis argues, through a detailed analysis of the elogia, that Augustus employed the inscriptions to propagate an image of himself as the most distinguished, and successful, leader in the history of Rome. Paolo Monella, The Sleep of Reason Paolo Monella The Sleep of Reason in the Bellum civile of Petronius (Sat. 119, 58-60) 0. Introduction The Bellum civile, a 289-line epic poem included in the Satyricon by Petronius, is the fruit of a literary polemic. The character Eumolpus, although a pompous and not very successful rhetorician, seems to be acknowledged by the protagonist Encolpius as an arbiter of artistic and especially literary taste (though not without a veil of irony). In chapter 118 of the novel (Handout 4.2), Eumolpus argues against what we could call the corrupt “Lucanian” tendencies of contemporary epic poetry. He claims that by suppressing the role of the gods in favor of fate and men epic poetry has been reduced to some degraded form of “versified history” (cfr. Petr. Sat. 118.6: non enim res gestae versibus comprehendendae sunt, quod longe melius historici faciunt). Eumolpus then provides the Bellum civile, as a specimen of allegedly good epic poetry on the topic of Roman civil wars. The only direct term of comparison is constituted for us by Lucan’s Pharsalia, due to the unfortunate loss of the early imperial epic production. Since the precise target of Eumopus’ polemic is not explicitly mentioned, he could have had in mind Lucan’s precedents or imitators as well. Yet, if we consider the literary success of Lucan in the Neronian period, he has good chances of being at least the main target, and this is the reason why so many studies have focused on the relations between Petronius’ Bellum civile and the Pharsalia, including Sullivan, Walsh, George, Grimal (see the essential bibliography at the end of your Handout, Handout 5). -
The Behistun Inscription and the Res Gestae Divi Augusti
Phasis 15-16, 2012-2013 Δημήτριος Μαντζίλας (Θράκη) The Behistun Inscription and the Res Gestae Divi Augusti Intertextuality between Greek and Latin texts is well known and – in recent decades – has been well studied. It seems though that common elements also appear in earlier texts, from other, mostly oriental countries, such as Egypt, Persia or Israel. In this article we intend to demonstrate the case of a Persian and a Latin text, in order to support the hypothesis of a common Indo-European literature (in addition to an Indo-European mythology and language). The Behistun Inscription,1 whose name comes from the anglicized version of Bistun or Bisutun (Bagastana in Old Persian), meaning “the place or land of gods”, is a multi-lingual inscription (being thus an equivalent of the Rosetta stone) written in three different cuneiform script extinct languages: Old Persian, Elamite (Susian), and Babylonian (Accadian).2 A fourth version is an Aramaic translation found on the 1 For the text see Adkins L., Empires of the Plain: Henry Rawlinson and the Lost Languages of Babylon, New York 2003; Rawlinson H. In times of war it was close to impossible to proceed in a moral and peaceful way. Augustus’ claims as an example of order and good morals would obviously be damaged by his troubling past. Therefore the memory of the civil war against Anthony culminating in the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. needed some conscious adaptations for Augustus’ later representation. The now well known history and literature of the civil war are mostly written in an Augustan perspective, a history of the winner. This thesis will try to answer the following question: How did Augustus adapt the memory of his troubling past of his civil war against Anthony in his commemoration practices? The civil war and the decisive battle of Actium play important but controversial roles in Augustan commemoration. Details of the civil war often were deliberately camouflaged or concealed in Augustan sources. -

4 Roman Religion 1. “By pietas and fides the Romans Reached TheiR PResent eminence” the strength of Rome rested on a number of foundations. Among these were its extraordinarily vital political culture and its capacity to sustain warfare for extended periods of time. Previous chapters have emphasized these features, but in this chapter and the next, focus shifts to less obvious sources of Rome’s strength, namely the special character of its society whose dual foundations were the household and the civic religion of the city. Roman Religiosity during the period of the Republic, outsiders were struck by the religiosity of the Romans. In the second century b.c., Polybius, a Greek statesman and historian who lived much of his adult life in Rome, claimed that it was “scrupulous fear of the gods that kept the Roman commonwealth together” (6.56). A century or so later another expatriate Greek, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, was also impressed by the concern of Romans for religion. Writing about the second king of Rome, dionysius noted that as a result of Numa’s activities, Rome possessed more religious observances than any other city “Greek or non-Greek, even among those who thought of themselves as most god- fearing” (2.63). Needless to say, Romans themselves promoted the belief that fidelity to their oaths and treaties and their general reverence for the gods explained their imperial success. “the gods look kindly on these qualities, for it was by pietas and fides that Romans reached their present eminence” declared the consul Q. Marcius Philippus in 169 b.c. -

1 Augustus’ Career in Overview: The Res Gestae Late in the year ad 14 a large parcel from Rome arrived in Ancyra (present-day Ankara), capital of the Roman province of Galatia-Pamphylia in the heart of Anatolia. It was addressed to the provincial governor and had been sent by the consuls – still the highest-ranking officials of the Roman state, at least in name. They informed the governor that after the princeps Augustus had died and been deified, his last will and testament had been read aloud in the Senate. The will included the princeps’ own account of his accomplishments and the gifts he had made to the Roman people from his own funds – an account now known as the Res Gestae Divi Augusti (“The Accomplishment of the Divine Augustus”). The consuls reported that, as Augustus had directed, the text of the Res Gestae had been engraved on two bronze pillars and placed in front of his mausoleum. This seemed insufficient, however, since the tribute would be limited to Rome. Therefore the Senate had decreed that its contents should also be made known to residents of the provinces, and the recipient would find a copy enclosed. How the governor carried out the Senate’s decree in the short term is not known. Perhaps he summoned the residents of the capital to the theater or the marketplace to hear a 1 Augustus’ Career in Overview reading of the text translated into Greek. What we do know, however, is that he did not stop there. The governor made sure that the words of the late ruler were widely circulated in his province and ultimately carved in stone. -

At the age of nineteen,* on my o>vn initiative and at my own expense, I raised an army " by means of which I restored Uberty <* to the republic, which the Mausoleum of Augustus at Rome. A Genettean Reading of Petronius' Satyrica

Signed: _________________________________ 2 ABSTRACT My thesis is a narratological analysis of Petronius’ Satyrica, particularly of the first section taking place in South Italy (Petron. 1–99), based on the methodology and terminology of Gérard Genette. There are two main objectives for the present study, which are closely connected to each other. One the one hand, I wish to identify and analyse the narrative characteristics of the Satyrica, including a selection of its literary models and the ways in which they are imitated or transformed and embedded in a new narrative schema, as well as the impact, which those texts that are connected to it have on our interpretation of the work. My narratological investigation of transtextuality in the case of Petronius includes: the assessment of matters of onymity and pseudonymity, rhematic and thematic titles, and the real and implied author in the sections on para-, inter- and metatexts; features belonging to the categories of narrative voice, mood, and time in the section on the narration (‘narrating’) and the récit (‘narrative’); the hypertextual relationships between the Satyrica and a selection of its potential models or sources in the section on the histoire (‘story’); and the architext or genre of the Satyrica.
