RYAN’S HILL ROAD is named for the Ryans – two On arrival at the fields there were no dugouts available so brothers Tom and Jerry, a brother-in-law Joe Tom, Jerry, Mick and Joe pitched their tent ¾ mile north of the post office. The following week they were joined Marron and an uncle Mick Ryan who came to by about 400 Aborigines who camped nearby. They held Coober Pedy in 1930. They were the first corrobaries to which everyone was invited. After about deep shaft diggers. 6 months in the tent, which they “shared with millions of friendly flies,” the Ryan party bought two dugouts in Post Office Hill for £10. The deal included an old Model-T truck and all Darkie Triffett’s camping and mining gear.

Mining gear at that time consisted of green hide buckets, pick & shovel and a windlass with 60 feet of wire rope. There was no machinery and very little blasting except at Flat Hill which was the hardest ground on the field.

Tom and Joe Marron started digging on a hill about ¾ of a mile from any previous diggings. When they started digging their “sanity was considered doubtful” but they persevered to a depth of 48 feet before they ran out of energy. Then Bill Hallion (Hallion St CPRT 16/8/12) lent them his auger which enabled them to go another 6 feet down. At 54 feet they struck the level. Within a fortnight 80% of the gougers on the field were digging all around them. They were all finding opal.

Unfortunately there were no buyers on the field at the time except for Ernie Reneke whose limit was £50. After a month of hard yakka, all they got for their opal was thirteen quid.

On Phar Lap’s Melbourne Cup Day they bottomed a shaft Tom Ryan when he visited Coober Pedy in 1983 and found the best pocket in all their days of digging. “One piece of faultless opal was ¾ inch thick the size of Left to right top: Joe Marron, Len Pfitzner, Bill In 1976, at the age of 78, Tom Ryan came back to Coober the palm of my hand and weighed over 10oz. LOCAL APPEAL ENABLES MINI BUS DONATION FOR INDIAN ORPHANAGE The Catacomb Church in Coober Pedy would like to thank the many people, both locals and tourists, along with the members of the Port Wakefield Uniting Church and the Victor Harbour Anglican Church Fellowship all of whom made the purchase of a Ta Ta Magic (minibus) possible in just 7 months after launching an appeal.

The need for such a vehicle was realized when Judy and Brian Underwood visited the orphanage in Kakinada India last February and found they had no transport to help them care for the 50 + children they look after.

There were great celebrations at the Orphanage when the vehicle arrived just before the monsoon (rainy) season hit.

For the first time these children could be taken to school protected from the torrential rain and flooding that occurs during the Monsoon season. The vehicle is also a great help when doing the shopping for 50 odd children!

A serious effort is being made to have the opal recognised as Australia's national gem. The Coober Pedy Shooters Club has a number of improvements planned in 2014, including developing a new IPSC range, a new Clay Target Thrower and possibly a new long distance rifle range.

These will be developed during the year, as we have the funding, partially provided by the District Council of Coober Pedy and the members own time to complete them.

Any help during the year with this work, would be greatly appreciated.

Our membership structure will be changing to combine membership charges and range fees into a single charge for the year allowing as many visits to our range in and out of regular shooting events. IMX Resources have been able to make use of the club for recreational activiites. It’s been nice to Any prospective new members are welcome to visit have this facility available to give the mining personel a social activity up here and try out our facilities before deciding whether or not it is something you would like to participate in.

We have a number of instructors at the club and can help with any firearms training and licensing paperwork needed. Upcoming Shoots for 2014
