William and Mary The Alumni Gazette The College of William and Mary Winter 1980 On The Cover The portrait of James Blair (oil on canvas, 49" by 39 3/4") is attributed to Charles Bridges (1670 - 1747), who was active in Virginia from 1735 - 1743. It is one of the most interesting and historically important paintings in William and Mary's art collection. Blair, first president of the College and one of the most powerful figures in Coioniai America, asked the artist to paint the facade of the Wren Building in the background of his portrait. This eariy view of the main College building reflects its appear- ance following the reconstruction required after the fire of 1705. Details from the painting were used during the 20th century restoration of the structure. The phoenix rising from the ashes, shown beneath the Wren Building, symbolizes the rebirth of the College after the 1705 fire. It is not known how or when William and Mary obtained this portrait. A reference to it in the faculty minutes of November, 1859, indicates that it was the possession of the College at that time and was, in fact, rescued from the Blue Room of the Wren Building when fire swept the buiiding earlier that year. On that festive afternoon, we ushered in the latest chapter of growth and development for the VHS. By turning over a few shovelsful of earth, we began a construction project that will add much-needed programming, exhibition, and storage space to our Richmond headquarters. It was a grand occasion and a delight to see such a large crowd of friends and members come out to participate. The representative individuals who donned hard hats and wielded silver shovels for the formal ritual of begin- ning construction stood in for so many others who made the event possible. Indeed, if the groundbreaking was the most important public event of the year, it represented the culmination of a vast investment behind the scenes in forward thinking, planning, and financial commitment by members, staff, trustees, and friends. That effort will bear fruit in 2006 in a magnifi- cent new facility. To make it all happen, we directed much of our energy in 2004 to the 175th Anniversary Campaign–Home for History in order to reach the ambitious goal of $55 million. That effort is on track—and for that we can be grateful—but much work remains to be done. Moreover, we also need to continue to devote resources and talent to sustain the ongoing programs and activities of the VHS.

Immediately after the death of each member Dr. Allen would bring into my office in the Harvard University Archives the neatly finished docket of the man's correspondence and a formal obituary. It was always with a pleasant word, and never with bitterness or resentment at the ravages of time, that he handed his friends' papers to the University's Charon. After a short sickness Dr. Allen died in Brookline on July 12, 1944. He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Francis P. Coffin, of Schenectady. C. K. S. JOHN STEWART BRYAN John Stewart Bryan, Virginia newspaper publisher and former president of the College of William and Mary, died at Richmond, Virginia, October 16, 1944. He was born at Brook Hill in Henrico County, October 23, 1871, the son of Joseph and Isobel Lamont (Stewart) Bryan. His father, during the War, was one of Mosby's famous raiders and inculcated his son with the Confederate tradition. His boy- hood was spent at Brook Hill and at Laburnum, the estate near Richmond where his father built a home in 1885. After a school education in Richmond and Alexandria, he attended the University of Virginia where he received the degree of A.M. in 1893. He then entered Harvard Law School, to acquire his LL.B. in 1897. Although he studied to become a lawyer, Mr. Bryan soon developed other interests. In 1900 he became associated with his father in publishing the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and in 1908, upon his father's death, he was chosen publisher of the paper.

Meyers* I. POST-RECONSTRUCTION AND ANTE-BELLUM Distorting, eliding, falsifying . a university’s memory can be as tricky as a person’s. So it has been at the College of William and Mary, often in curious ways. For example, those delving into its history long overlooked the College’s eighteenth century plantation worked by slaves for ninety years to raise tobacco.1 Although it seems easy to understand that omission, it is harder to understand why the College’s 1760 affiliation with a school for black children2 was overlooked, or its president in 1807 being half-sympathetic to a black man seeking to sit in on science lectures,3 or its awarding an honorary degree to the famous English abolitionist Granville Sharp in 1791,4 all indications of forgotten anti-slavery thought at the College. SUUNAN T~FIFIH PRFSIDENf OF THE COillGE OF WllllAM ANn MARy Timothy J. Sullivan first came to the College of William and Mary as a freshman in 1962. He left four years later with a bachelor's degree in government, a Phi Beta Kappa key and membership in Omicron Delta Kappa. Today, Sullivan is once again pursuing academic excellence at William and Mary as the College's 25th president. Elected April 9, 1992, by the Board of Visitors, the former dean of the College'S Marshall-Wythe School of Law became president June l,just eight months before the College began its 300th anniversary celebration. ''William and Mary today is unique among the nation's public supported institutions of higher education," said Sullivan. "None combine our college's academic standards, scale and history, with an enduring commitment to educate young men and women for lives defined by high intellectual achievement and caring community service." Sullivan's life has been intimately linked with William and Mary. His wife, Anne Doubet Klare, was a fellow member of the class of 1966, and the two met here while undergraduates. They were married in the chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, the oldest building in continuous academic use in this country.     “THE STUDENT IS CONVERTED INTO THE WARRIOR”— THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY IN VIRGINIA AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH THE MILITARY FROM THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR TO THE PRESENT DAY Thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy At the University of Leicester By Wallace Wilford Kale Jr. BA (Park University) School of Historical Studies University of Leicester December 2010 Abstract In this first comprehensive study of the military history of the College of William and Mary in Virginia, it is easy to appreciate how the rich and varied military accounts have played important roles in the institution’s history. Beginning with the French and Indian War (1754), when students left the College to fight, and continuing to the present warfare in Afghanistan, military encounters have woven through the tapestry of the College’s history. The citizen-soldier, breaking away from life’s routine to fight for liberty and for their state or nation, is vividly demonstrated here. The College was directly involved in two wars—the American Revolution and the American Civil War—with events on, near, or surrounding the campus. Other United States wars, continuing to the present day, and a number of military events and quasi-military situations are involved, some not really of the College’s own making, but thrust upon the school as a matter of course. During the Revolution and Civil War the institution was forced to temporarily close. In other cases of military conflict, the school lost significant numbers of students and was pushed to near bankruptcy. Public service of students and faculty demonstrated by military involvement pervades the culture of the College throughout the centuries, along with the keen sense that military service is an individual responsibility.
