The library has many other portraits (photo- EJfeLaiag graphs and prints) which are not framed and, there- fore, not listed here. The titles of certain framed maps, en- gravings, photographs, and manuscripts are included in this catalog also. Some of these appear because of the sentimental interest of several generations of students who remember that they hung on the walls of the library in former days. In order to serve the purpose of a convenient pamphlet for the use of the many visitors, who come to the library, and of William and Mary students, the descriptive matter has been condensed. At some future time it is hoped that a revised edition may be published, with more detailed in- formation accompanying the titles, and with reproductions of the older and more important portraits. The reader is referred to that very comprehensive work on the subject of Virginia portraits entitled Virginia His- torical Portraiture, by Alexander W. Weddell, published in 1929, as an appropriate memorial of the exhibition of colonial portraits of Virginians at Virginia House, the home of Mr. Weddell in Richmond. Numbers 1, 2, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 27, 28, 36, 37, 66, and 82 in this catalog are described in con- siderable detail in the foregoing work, and each description is accompanied by a full page reproduction. 1.
