CATALOG OF PORTRAITS in the Library and in Other Buildings of William and Mary College e^9
S3fl5[BHE PORTRAITS are oil paintings unless otherwise K| ppfl stated. The library has many other portraits (photo-
EJfeLaiag graphs and prints) which are not framed and, there- fore, not listed here. The titles of certain framed maps, en- gravings, photographs, and manuscripts are included in this catalog also. Some of these appear because of the sentimental interest of several generations of students who remember that they hung on the walls of the library in former days. In order to serve the purpose of a convenient pamphlet for the use of the many visitors, who come to the library, and of William and Mary students, the descriptive matter
has been condensed. At some future time it is hoped that a revised edition may be published, with more detailed in-
formation accompanying the titles, and with reproductions of the older and more important portraits.
The reader is referred to that very comprehensive work on the subject of Virginia portraits entitled Virginia His- torical Portraiture, by Alexander W. Weddell, published in 1929, as an appropriate memorial of the exhibition of colonial portraits of Virginians at Virginia House, the home of Mr.
Weddell in Richmond. Numbers 1, 2, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 27, 28, 36, 37, 66, and 82 in this catalog are described in con- siderable detail in the foregoing work, and each description is accompanied by a full page reproduction.

VASILI POLENOV
Vasili Polenov was born in 1844, and died July 18, 1927. Studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Petrograd, under the famous professor, P. O. Chistiakov (1832-1920). Polenov first exhibited at the "Peredvizhniki" (Ambulant) Society in 1874, and his early landscapes attracted general attention and favorable comments from the critics because of their color value and modesty of subject. Later on, the story of the earthly life of Christ attracted Polenov's attention and he devoted himself almost exclusively to portrayals of New Testament episodes. Believing that truthfulness is one of the principal qualities of every work of art, Polenov decided to go to the Holy Land and to study localities mentioned in the Scriptures. He made two pro- longed trips to Palestine and came back with hundreds of sketches, drawings, and paintings of the country and of the types of people among whom Christ lived. One result of this pilgrimage to the Holy Land was a series of canvasses, constituting Polenov's "Life of Christ." This cycle of paintings contains over sixty principal themes and scores of variants. Some of the pictures are of enormous size and nearly all are now in the galleries of principal Russian Museums. The picture "He, that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her," which is now in the William and Mary College Library, was exhibited at the Russian Art Exhibition in New York City in March, 1924, and is a variant of a huge canvas, "Christ and the Sinner," which hangs in the Museum of Alexander III in Petrograd. The picture "He is guilty of death," the other painting presented by Mr. Crane to the Library, represents an episode of Christ's life during his trial by the Sanhedrim The chief features of all of Polenov's pictures are a realistic treatment of the subjects and wonderfully executed mass-scenery, full of color and atmosphere. V. Polenov was a Professor at the "Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture" for many years, and many talented Russian painters of the younger generation who have obtained high distinction in the world of art came from his studio. The artist was a Fellow of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, the highest distinction an artist can attain in Russia. These two examples of the work of Polenov were presented to the Library of William and Mary College by Mr. Charles R. Crane. Catalog of Portraits 25
