The Australian actor co-stars in the film review web series "On Cinema at the Cinema" with Tim Heidecker and is the co-writer and co-star of the Adult Swim series, Decker. He had a part in the 2015 film Ant-Man, and that same year, starred in Entertainment, a drama he co-wrote. In the 1990s, he ran the music label, Amarillo Records, and played in bands like Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists, Faxed Head, and has released a number of albums as Neil Hamburger, mostly on the Chicago independent music label, Drag City. He contributed artwork and live recordings to Flipper's Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985. As told to Charlie Sextro, 2383 words. As a kid, how interested were you in entertainment? Super interested. Initially really with music, and then I got more into movies. I was a complete obsessive about all the things I liked. I grew up in Tempe, Arizona. I was really into Phil Ochs. He was my absolute idol. I was really into the Bee Gees and The Who. Then I got really into a revival, repertoire theater, The Valley Art. It was like $2 or something and I would pretty much go to any movie that was playing, to see what was going on. Then when I saw something that interested me, I would go over to the campus at ASU.

As 'MacArthur Park' turns 45, Jimmy Webb will play it in that park - Los Angeles Times 10/16/13 12:35 PM ! Back to Original Article As 'MacArthur Park' turns 45, Jimmy Webb will play it in that park Jimmy Webb wrote the odd 1960s hit 'MacArthur Park,' recorded by Richard Harris. He has a sense of humor about it. And yes, he saw a cake left out in the rain. June 14, 2013 | By Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times Before becoming a widely lauded songwriter, Jimmy Webb was just another aspiring musician living in a dingy Los Angeles apartment. The Oklahoma transplant would wander from his low-rent flat in Silver Lake to a place that would inspire one of his most indelible hits, MacArthur Park. There, between Wilshire and 7th, he'd wait for his girlfriend to get off work from her job nearby. "I used to eat lunch in the park," said Webb, 66. "It was a place you could be away from the dreariness of a really bottom-scale apartment." The scenes he saw there day after day inspired him to write "MacArthur Park," the unlikely 1968 hit single sung by actor Richard Harris. TIMELINE: Must-see summer music Now, 45 years after the location he immortalized became an unlikely pop-culture touchstone, Webb will sing "MacArthur Park" in MacArthur Park on Saturday to kick off a summer concert series. It's a first for Webb, who's never performed the song at its namesake location. "MacArthur Park was — perhaps I'm painting it with the brush of nostalgia — a kind and gentle place," Webb said.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Macarthur Park - Richard Harris Sings the Songs of Jimmy Webb
MacArthur Park - Richard Harris Sings The Songs of Jimmy Webb Product Details Sales Rank: #59268 in Music Brand: Harris, Richard Released on: 2001-09-21 Rating: NR (Not Rated) Number of discs: 1 Format: Import Original language: English Number of items: 1 Dimensions: .45 h x 5.75 w x 5.00 l,.22 pounds In Richard Harris, Jimmy Webb's songs found their ideal interpreter. Harris's voice was not great, but wielded by his prodigious acting talent it conveys nuances of Webb's intricate lyrics that other singers usually missed. Of course, the title song is the most famous, but listen to The Yard Went On Forever. It's at once a remembrance of childhood, a lament for lost innocence, an idealization of mother love and a cry against the tyranny of war. This song was also, many years ago, one of the earliest to have an accompanying film produced. Harris stands in a long overcoat whipped by the wind while the camera whirls upward and the children's chorus intones Dona Nobis Pacem, Give us Peace. The CD contains all the songs from both of Harris's albums of Jimmy Webb's songs, all performed with the same attention to dramatic detail as Yard and MacArthur Park. Whether a used copy or new, if you care about the art of song interpretation, you can't afford not to own this CD. These two albums certainly contain some of Jimmy Webb's greatest songs. _The Yard Went on Forever_, in particular, is a classic 60s-70s concept album with one phenomonal song after another, and has a cumulative effect that is shattering.

  • Ok, Here's How It All Happened: Amanda Shires Thinks
Learnin’ when to brake and when to hit the pedal Workin’ hard to look good till we die The Highwomen exist in harmony, but especially in unison. “The sound of women’s voices in unison is a metaphor for what this group is,” says Brandi Carlile, who joins Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires in a band that sings and writes together, and that exists to include, elevate, and amplify the role of women in country music. Their union might seem unlikely with Carlile from Ravensdale, Washington, Hemby from Puxico, Missouri, Morris from Arlington, Texas and Shires from the Lone Star State towns of Mineral Wells and Lubbock, Texas. Yet together it has ignited a movement more enchanting than any one of them ever imagined. A folk-pop hero, a hit country songwriter, a genre- shifting superstar and an Americana heroine. Way back in 2016, Shires read an article by the great writer Marissa photo credit: Alysse Gafkjen Moss, an article explaining the logically inexplicable: Women don’t get a fair shake (rarely a handshake) on popular country radio. Shires’ exasperation led to anger, which led to something proactive, creative and helpful. “She walked up to me in a bar and said, ‘I’ve been thinking and I want to start a band called The Highwomen.’” Carlile says. k, here’s how it all melody along with herself. To And they did. And they named it happened: Amanda Shires Carlile, Shires, and Morris, the The Highwomen in tribute to the thinks of starting a group recordings crystalized the sound Jimmy Webb-penned song “The and she tells Dave Cobb.

  • BIOGRAPHY Jimmy Webb Is an American Songwriter, Composer
BIOGRAPHY Jimmy Webb is an American songwriter, composer and singer known worldwide as a master of his trade. His timeless hits continue to be performed and recorded by the industry’s biggest names, and his new compositions span the musical spectrum from classical to pop. This past year saw his “Wichita Lineman” on the set list in three major artist tours – Guns N’ Roses, Little Big Town, and Toby Keith – and used prominently in an episode of the Netflix series Ozark. Not many artists can say they premiered a classical nocturne and had a rap hit with Kanye West (“Do What You Gotta Do” a central hook in “Famous”) in the same year, but Jimmy’s career is full of surprises. Since his first platinum record “The Worst That Could Happen,” Webb has had numerous hits including “Up, Up and Away,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman, “Galveston,” “Highwayman,” “All I Know” and “MacArthur Park,” and has also become a leader and mentor in the industry as a champion for songwriters. Webb is the only artist ever to have received Grammy Awards for music, lyrics and orchestration. His numerous accolades include the prestigious Ivor Novella International Award (2012) and the Academy of Country Music’s Poet Award (2016). In 2016 Rolling Stone magazine listed Webb as one of the top 50 songwriters of all time. Jimmy Webb was the youngest member ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and served as its Chairman. He has also served proudly as the Vice Chair of ASCAP. Time and again Webb has paved the way for songwriters in an ever-changing media landscape, spearheading the ongoing effort to preserve the rights of songwriters and their intellectual property in the digital age.

  • The Roots Report: an Interview with Jimmy Webb
The Roots Report: An Interview with Jimmy Webb Okee dokee folks … When I was young, my first musical impressions came from what my parents played on the living room stereo. My father liked big band and 1950s music. I didn’t much like that stuff. My mother played the more popular and timely tunes. I specifically remember her playing the 45 “I’m Telling You Now” by Freddy and the Dreamers. It’s not a bad thing if I tell you that she used to do the “jumping jack Freddy dance” to the record, is it? Her LPs were mostly show tune soundtracks and a couple of albums by the Fifth Dimension and Richard Harris. Those two albums introduced me to the songwriting of Jimmy Webb. Webb is responsible for composing classics like “McArthur Park,” “Up, Up and Away” and “Galveston,” and his songs have been covered by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, REM, Carly Simon and many others. Webb has been active in the music business for over 50 years and has scored countless hits and garnered numerous awards. He’s written for others and released 14 albums of his own. I had a chance to speak to the songwriting genius the other day about songwriting and his upcoming show at the Z. I asked him what to expect from a Jimmy Webb show. “Not an orchestra, no dog acts and no jugglers. Just me and a grand piano. I try to engage the audience and perform a lot from the ’60s and ’70s, but it’s not a nostalgic wallow.

  • Macarthur Park
JUST FOR THE RECORD by Dennis Barker Richard Harris: MacArthur Park MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet green icing flowing down … uh oh; I don’t think we’re in Kansas any more. In a rock and roll landscape littered with one hit wonders, Macarthur Park stands out as a singular piece of genius, and an unlikely hit record. Composed by 1960’s songsmith Jimmy Webb, MacArthur Park’s surreal lyrics, rife with metaphor and symbolism can often perplex and amuse listeners. This 7+ minute psychedelic orchestral epic, was offered to, and rejected by every recording artist Webb approached. However, in 1968, the unwanted song with the weird lyrics, was surprisingly resurrected by Webb’s friend and actor Richard Harris, for his debut album “A Tramp Shining”. The songs lyrics, often dismissed as gibberish, are actually Webb’s attempt at an autobiographical anthem for lost love. The song laments a time when Webb, living in LA, would spend time with his girlfriend at nearby MacArthur Park. Once you understand that the melting park and cake represent the ending of a love affair, it’s not hard to assign Webb’s feelings of loss and insecurity to the remaining lyrics. Give the record a listen, you’ll get it. Aside from the bizarre, “too clever by twice” lyrics, which are seemingly emblematic of the hip sixties, the music is fabulous, and surprisingly, the musically ungifted Harris turns out to be the ideal choice to interpret it. MacArthur Park would be a singular hit for Richard Harris, but, it was a home run.
