He may have roared on the racecourse--louder and louder as the season wore on--but away from the heat of battle, the Lion's demeanour appears to have been quelled to a contented purr. Strolling calmly before the pack of assembled media, he gave an assured first public appearance in his new role. "He was an absolute pleasure to train and has a fabulous mind on him," confirmed John Gosden, who arrived by helicopter from Newmarket with his son Thady and Roaring Lion's owner Sheikh Fahad Al Thani just moments before the parade commenced. Three years later and Zebedee's first Australian crop are CORNERSTONE PAIR BRING hitting the track. The son of Invincible Spirit is now a permanent fixture at Cornerstone alongside another prolific sire of EUROPEAN SPEED European 2-year-old winners in Sir Prancealot (Ire). "It was a gap we saw in the market but it was also borne AND PRECOCITY through necessity," Hayes told TDN AusNZ. "The Australian Group 1 winning 3-year-olds by Fastnet (Rock) and Redoute's (Choice) were making anything from $12-$30 million. That for us was not economically sound." "It was borne from a niche opportunity, but also the economic reality of saying, 'standing those horses for $30,000 first-season, it becomes a risky business for us and the breeder." While we've only seen one of Zebedee's first Australian crop hit the track, overseas he continues to produce the goods. Barbill (GB) became his seventh stakes winner when successful in a listed race at Chantilly in France earlier this week, while last week Charline Royale (Ire) was a six-length winner in a Group 3 race in Italy.

Bringing Success to Australia Cornerstone Stud’s Zebedee Hayes is a firm believer that Zebedee's success in Europe can translate to Australia, where the demand for the Invincible Spirit By Bren O'Brien line is as strong as ever. Cornerstone Stud's strategy to import speed and precocity "We see no reason why not. What we have in our favour is from Europe is about to face its biggest test with Zebedee's (GB) that Invincible Spirit works in Australia. We've got really nice first crop hitting the racetrack. TDN AusNZ caught up with Sam reports from trainers, the guess work is starting to come out of Hayes about his strategic approach to stallion selection. it now that they are broken in and are with trainers around the Finding an edge in the hyper-competitive Australian stallion country.” market is never easy, especially when it comes to focusing on Cornerstone knew that in order to make an impression in the speed and precocity. competitive Australian market, it was crucial for Zebedee's With colonial-bred Group 1 winning sprinting stallions being progeny to be pushed out from South Australia and have a snapped up for massive prices in recent years, Cornerstone national presence. Defying The Numbers “They are both going to cover over 100 mares this year, so In terms of numbers of 2-year-olds at the track, Hayes admits they sit well alongside each other," he said. it will be a battle for Zebedee to compete against the big-name Hayes said the first Sir Prancealot foals have impressed and first-season sires. the strategy for the first crop will be very similar to that "It will be a case of his winners to runners which is what we'll employed for Zebedee. be looking at most closely. However, despite being at a numerical disadvantage, Hayes still holds hope that Zebedee can complete a rare double and give the leading first-season sire title a shake. "It only takes 10 or 12 winners in a season and maybe a stakes winner and you can go close to winning the first-season sires' title. He's a horse who gets an average of 30 2-year-old winners every year in Europe, so you only have to do a third of that here and he's right in the hunt," he said. Hayes certainly feels that in his fourth-season, Zebedee is very much on the up, with a broader range and better quality of clients sending their mares to him this season. "A lot of breeders and trainers are noticing him and are aware of him, which for a stallion that is not standing in the heart of the Hunter, is a compliment," he said.

Following in Zebedee's Footsteps Sir Prancealot Sir Prancealot's path is mirroring that of his fellow Cornerstone resident. TAKING STOCK: ARROGATE, CITING REPUTATION, WOODBINE SEEKS STIFFER PENALTY FOR SHOCK WAVE CROSS TRAFFIC KEEP SIRE VIOLATION by Perry Lefko IN SPOTLIGHT Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) is seeking a stiffer penalty for a veterinarian who was fined and put on probation for a year for violating rules pertaining to the shock wave treatment of horses because it is concerned about its reputation among horsemen and bettors. In an appeal of the ruling issued by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which fined Dr. Brian Van Arem $7,500 and placed conditions on his license for a period of one year beginning on Oct. 4, WEG wants additional penalties to be imposed on the veterinarian, as first reported by Daily Racing Form. With many quality runners, it was assumed a long time ago that his name would be carried forward in pedigrees through both his sons and daughters as they went to stud, but this has proven to be only partly true. While his daughters are sought-after broodmares who've produced 157 black-type winners around the globe to date, his sons haven't matched their consistency yet.

As a group, these six stallions are also atypical of the type of stakes horses that gave Unbridled's Song a loud and perhaps unfair reputation for unsoundness: those late-season 2-year-olds or early season 3-year-olds that were honed for the Classics but got hurt along the way, such Gl Fountain of Youth S. winner Songandaprayer from his first crop (1998), Gl Wood Memorial winner Buddha (1999), multiple Grade lll winner Rockport Harbor (2002), Grade ll winner Old Fashioned (2006), Gl Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and champion two-year-old colt Midshipman (2006), Gl Classic-placed Dunkirk (2006), Grade ll winner Mission Impazible, Grade lll winner Winslow Homer (2007), etc., and most notably, the Grade ll-winning filly Eight Belles (2005), who broke down and died on track after finishing second in the Gl Kentucky Derby. That Will Take Charge and Cross Traffic are doing as well as they are with their 2-year-olds is a promising sign for this group, and especially so for Arrogate, who has the best mares of any of these horses behind him at Juddmonte. Juddmonte knows how to make stallions--Frankel and Kingman are its latest--and the US division of the international operation has experience with Unbridled's Song, having stood his homebred son First Defence in Kentucky with limited success before he was sent away to Saudi Arabia to make room for Arrogate. They'll make the pedigree adjustments and recalibrate for Arrogate to get earlier horses for the Classics, but they know better than most how to manage types that need time. First Defence, like Arrogate, wasn't on the Classics trail, and he didn't become a graded stakes winner until four, when he won the Glll Jaipur S. and Gl Forego S. He, like the six mentioned here, was managed to allow for maturity. As a sire, he got only 10 black-type winners from more than 300 foals, but it's notable that his best runner by far was Juddmonte's own Close Hatches, who won an Eclipse in 2014 as champion older dirt female.

Cross Traffic, who, as noted above, didn't race at two or three and made all his starts at four, is the sire of the probable 2-year-old filly champion in Gl Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and Gl Frizette S. winner Jaywalk, along with four other black-type winners from his first crop. He's up to $25,000 for 2019 after serving mares for $7,500 this year. If he becomes the champion first-crop sire this year, he will be the second son of Unbridled's Song to do it, after Dunkirk in 2013. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I might have missed it, but I haven't seen any story that pointed out that Accelerate, in winning the Breeders= Cup Classic, hit a major milestone--winning four Grade I races at 1 1/4 miles on the dirt in a single year. Winning the Triple Crown is supposed to be one of the toughest achievements in horse racing, right? Well, since the graded race era began in 1973, there have been five Triple Crown winners. The number of horses that have won four Grade I, mile-and- one-quarter races on dirt in a single year is only four. It might seem like a fairly unacknowledged accomplishment, but maybe it shouldn't be. Grade I races are the ultimate goal for any horse, and one mile and one-quarter on the dirt is still the CLASSIC distance in American racing and will remain so (because of the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders= Cup Classic) no matter how much money is thrown at turf races or nine- furlong dirt races (sorry Pegasus). Affirmed did it in 1979 winning the Strub, the Santa Anita Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Woodward. Alysheba did it five times in 1988, opening his 4-year-old season with the Strub and the Big 'Cap and ending it with the Woodward, the Meadowlands Cup and the Breeders= Cup Classic. Cigar in 1995 won the Gulfstream Park Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup, the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders= Cup Classic. And now Accelerate has joined the club. The list of top horses that ran in the graded stakes era, but didn't hit the magic number of four includes Alydar, Forego, Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer, John Henry, , Holy Bull, A.P. Indy, Best Pal, Skip Away, , Ghostzapper and Tiznow as well as , and the two most recent TC winners. Looking back through the DRF Champions book, the only pre- graded stakes horses I could find that probably would have been credited with four Grade I 10-furlong wins in a year were Gun Bow in 1964 (Strub, Gulfstream Park H., Brooklyn H. and Woodward) and Round Table in 1958 (Santa Anita Maturity, Santa Anita H., Gulfstream Park H. and Woodward). Those that didn't make the list included Kelso, Dr. Fager, Damascus, Buckpasser, Sword Dancer, Bold Ruler, Swaps, Nashua, Citation and Seabiscuit. As always, no 100% guarantee that my research is error-free, but I'm pretty sure the old eyes got it right. --Jeffrey Tufts Jeffrey Tufts is a former morning line maker and timer on the Southern California circuit.
