The Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs 8. 1 Introduction In the last chapter, you learned how early Egyptians settled in the Nile Ri ver valley. In this chapter, you will visit ancient Egypt and meet four of its leaders, called pharaohs. In 1922, archeologists discovered the tomb of a pharaoh known as King Tutankhaten, or King Tut. Inside a small burial chamber, they found three coffins nested inside each other. The smallest coffin was made of solid gold. It held the king's mummy. (A mummy is a body that has been preserved after death to keep it from decaying.) On the mummy's head was a magnificent golden mask. Jewelry and good luck charms lay on the mummy and in the wrappings that protected it. Other rooms of the tomb were filled with statues, weapons, furniture, and even a chariot. The treasures in King Tut's tomb provided an amazing glimpse into ancient Egypt. Other pharaohs also left behind fabulous riches and artwork. Many of them built great monuments to celebrate their accomplishments. Like King Tut's tomb, these artifacts have much to teach us about this ancient civilization. He extended trade across Mesopotamia and strengthened the economy through rain-fed agriculture in northern Mesopotamia. • The Akkadian Empire experienced a period of successful conquest under Naram-Sin due to benign climatic conditions, huge agricultural surpluses, and the confiscation of wealth. • The empire collapsed after the invasion of the Gutians. Changing climatic conditions also contributed to internal rivalries and fragmentation, and the empire eventually split into the Assyrian Empire in the north and the Babylonian empire in the south. He conquered many of the surrounding regions to establish the massive multilingual empire. Cuneiform One of the earliest known systems of writing, distinguished by its wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets, and made by means of a blunt reed for a stylus. WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should salute those citizens who through their extraordinary efforts have distinguished themselves both in their chosen professions and as community leaders of whom we can all be proud; and WHEREAS, one such noteworthy person is David L. Mesopotamia Timeline 5000 BC - The Sumer form the first towns and cities. They use irrigation to farm large areas of land. 4000 BC - The Sumer establish powerful city-states building large ziggurats at the center of their cities as temples to their gods. 3500 BC - Much of lower Mesopotamia is inhabited by numerous Sumer city-states such as Ur, Uruk, Eridu, Kish, Lagash, and Nippur. 3300 BC - The Sumerians invent the first writing. They use pictures for words and inscribe them on clay tablets. 3200 BC - The Sumerians begin to use the wheel on vehicles. 3000 BC - The Sumerians start to implement mathematics using a number system with the base 60. 2700 BC - The famous Sumerian King Gilgamesh rules the city-state of Ur. 2400 BC - The Sumerian language is replaced by the Akkadian language as the primary spoken language in Mesopotamia. 2330 BC - Sargon I of the Akkadians conquers most of the Sumerian city states and creates the world's first empire, the Akkadian Empire. 2250 BC - King Naram-Sin of the Akkadians expands the empire to its largest state. He will rule for 50 years. 2100 BC - After the Akkadian Empire crumbles, the Sumerians once again gain power. The city of Ur is rebuilt. 1900 BC - The Assyrians rise to power in northern Mesopotamia. 1792 BC - Hammurabi becomes king of Babylon. He establishes the Code of Hammurabi and Babylon soon takes over much of Mesopotamia. 1781 BC - King Shamshi-Adad of the Assyrians dies. The First Assyrian Empire is soon taken over by the Babylonians. 1750 BC - Hammurabi dies and the First Babylonian Empire begins to fall apart. -

Journal of Ancient History 2019; 7(1): 1–31 Melanie Groß* and David Kertai Becoming Empire: Neo-Assyrian palaces and the creation of courtly culture https://doi.org/10.1515/jah-2018-0026 Abstract: Assyria (911–612 BCE) can be described as the founder of the imperial model of kingship in the ancient Near East. The Assyrian court itself, however, remains poorly understood. Scholarship has treated the court as a disembodied, textual entity, separated from the physical spaces it occupied – namely, the pa- laces. At the same time, architectural analyses have examined the physical struc- tures of the Assyrian palaces, without consideration for how these structures were connected to people’s lives and works. The palaces are often described as se- cluded, inaccessible locations. This study presents the first model of the Assyrian court contextualized in its actual palaces. It provides a nuanced model highlight- ing how the court organized the immense flow of information, people and goods entering the palace as a result of the empire’s increased size and complexity. It argues that access to the king was regulated by three gates of control which were manned by specific types of personnel and a more situational organization that moved within the physical spaces of the palace and was contingent on the king’s activity. ARCL0017 1. OVERVIEW&SCHEDULE Introduction This module introduces Greek art and architecture in the period 2500-50 BC. In the context of a broad chronological survey, the focus is on three main themes: (1) the relationship between Greek art and society (2) addressing current problems in Greek art history and contemporary society, and (3) extensive training in visual analysis and the different lenses to look at Greek art. This year, as the course will be taught remotely, it will consist of different modes of online teaching that contain individual creativity, group fun, and lively discussions using famous objects and buildings belonging to the so-called ‘Greek canon’, and lesser known or even excluded object categories that will expand our idea of what Greek art is. Normally, we would go to the British Museum together, and look at all the incredible objects up close. This is not possible for the semester, but that does not mean we cannot discuss or study them. In fact, teaching the module online will provide us with the great opportunity to look beyond the British Museum (or any museum for that matter) and the Classical canon, and discuss together what Greek Art is right now, and how make it more relevant in the future. -

My goal, in terms of audience reaction, is to provide: 1. A Sense of Wonder (emotional impact) 2. Opportunity for Involvement (physical impact) and 3. Information (intellectual impact) for my audience. The play acts as a cross-cultural exploratory vehicle, utilized to make connections with the Universe by understanding how sky lore from various ancient civilizations reflect their ways of life. The main inquiry is whether or not I am able to appropriate archaeoastronomical data to create a viable, wondrous artwork for the modern day person to connect with, while conveying scientific information at the same time. By researching peer-reviewed sources in both archaeoastronomy and art, I was able to come across an intersection—a few subjects of interest unbounded by cultures, religions, time, locations, and fields of study. The end result is the birth of a mixed media theatrical experience that envelops the singular Spectator with sky lore of the Orion constellation told across civilizations, animated by abstract puppets, lights, and sounds. The puppet theatre structure, which was stationed at UC Riverside's Phyllis Gill Gallery, was open by appointment only from December 5th to December 9th of 2015.
