DE GRAVE* Abstract A report is presented on a small collection of caridean shrimp (Crustacea: Decapoda) from coastal waters of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf. Eight species are new records for the area, raising the total number of carideans known from the Persian Gulf to 46. A review is presented of all previous records, which highlights the relative paucity of records. Key words: Decapoda, Caridea, Persian Gulf, new records Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit behandelt eine kleine Sammlung von Garnelen aus den Küstengewässern der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate im Persischen Golf. Acht Arten werden zum ersten Mal aus diesem Gebiet gemeldet, das erhöht die Gesamtzahl der aus dem Golf bekannten Caridea auf 46. Eine Übersicht aller bisherigen Funde zeigt auf wie wenig aus diesem Gebiet vorliegt. Introduction NOBILI (1905a, b) described four species of caridean shrimp from the Persian Gulf: Alpheus bucephaloides NOBILI, 1905; Alpheuspersicus NOBILI, 1905 [now considered a junior synonym of Alpheus malleodigitus (BATE, 1888)]; Periclimenes borradailei NOBILI, 1905; and Harpilius gerlacheiNoBiu, 1905 (now Philarius gerlachei). E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Periclimenaeus nielbrucei sp. nov., a coral reef sponge associate, is described from specimens from the Capricorn Islands, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. The rostral dentition is unique in Periclimenaeus, with the dorsal carinal teeth diverging irregularly from the midline. The Australian Periclimenaeus fauna is now increased to 24 species. Introduction The presence of the pontoniine shrimp genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile, 1915, in Australian waters was established by E.J. Miers (1884) when he described Coralliocaris ? tridentatus (now Periclimenaeus tridentatus), from Thursday Island, Torres Strait, Queensland, in his report on the crustaceans collected, by Dr R.W. Coppinger, Staff- Surgeon during the Indo-Pacific Surveying Voyage of H.M.S. Alert, 1881-2. A second species, Coralliocaris hecate Nobili, 1904 (now Periclimenaeus hecate) was reported from Cape Jaubert, Western Australia by Heinrich Balss (1921), reporting on the material of Dr E Mjöberg’s Swedish Scientific Expedition to Australia (1910–1913). Periclimenaeus currently contains 45 species in the Indo-West Pacific region and is the second largest genus in the Pontoniinae. At least 22 species are reported to occur in Australian waters and 13 species have been previously recorded from Queensland, particularly from the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. -

In addition to the three species so far recorded in the region, we report Spongicola goyi for the first time, and formally describe three new species of Spongicolidae. Following the morphological review and DNA sequencing of type specimens, we propose the synonymy of Spongiocaris yaldwyni with S. neocaledonensis and review a proposed broad Indo-West Pacific distribution range of Spongicoloides novaezelandiae. New records for the latter at nearly 54◦ South on the Macquarie Ridge provide the southernmost record for stenopodidean shrimp known to date. However, no caridean shrimp has been discovered so far in the world. The shrimp Palaemon aestuarius sp. nov. (Palaemonidae) preserved in amber from Chiapas, Mexico during Early Miocene (ca. 22.8 Ma) represents the frst and the oldest amber caridean species. This fnding suggests that the genus Palaemon has occupied Mexico at least since Early Miocene. In addition, the coexistence of the shrimp, a beetle larva, and a piece of residual leaf in the same amber supports the previous explanations for the Mexican amber depositional environment, in the tide-infuenced mangrove estuary region. Palaemonidae Rafnesque, 1815 is the largest shrimp family within the Caridea, with world-wide distribution1. It is now widely believed that it originated from the marine environment in the indo-western Pacifc warm waters, and has successfully adapted to non-marine environments, such as estuaries and limnic environments2–4. Palaemon Weber, 1795 is the second most species-rich genus besides the Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 in the Palaemonidae4–6. Te 87 extant species of Palaemon are found in various habitats, such as marine, brackish and freshwater7,8. -

Gnathophyllum taylori, a new species of caridean shrimp from south-eastern Australia (Crustacea: Decapoda: Gnathophyllidae). Memoirs o f Museum Victoria 60(2): 237-242. Anew species of caridean shrimp, Gnathophyllum taylori sp.nov., is described from south-eastern Australia. The new species most closely resembles two Atlantic species, G. modestum Hay, 1917, and G. elegans Risso, 1816, but is readily distinguished by its banded rather than spotted body colour pattern. Gnathophyllum taylori is the third Indo-West Pacific species to be recognised. It differs from G. americanum, with which it can be sympatric, by having fewer and narrower dark bands on the body as well as by the rostral dentition, morphology of the orbit and dactyli of the walking legs. The identity of G. fasciolatum Stimpson, 1860, a junior synonym of G. americanum, is fixed by neotype selection.
