How difficult is it? How different is it? It’s not “rocket science.” It’s not all that different from flying in the U.S., but you do have to do some homework. It’s just another checklist - passport, U.S. Customs & Border Patrol sticker, FCC Radio Station/Operator’s licenses, FAA 3rd class medical or better. The rewards of flying Canada were well worth the extra legwork to get ready to race this year. And at the Terminus, the racers were international pilots! The Air Race Classic (ARC) has flown to Canada before - Toronto (1999) and St. John (20017). These were “before my time” racing, and they were one-off stops - The Terminus. Let’s visit some Canadian airports and cities!” So we flew timing Waypoint Schedule 4 lines and stopped in Sault Ste. Marie (US/CA both), North Bay, Brantford, and Welland - all in Ontario. Our Terminus at Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport AEMSF 5 was just 30 minutes from Niagara Falls and named for a Canadian racer.

Lauren Miller / Marketing Assistant 724-547-6203 [email protected] JSfirm.com Attends FAA Wright Brothers Award Presentation to Ann Pellegreno ________________________________________________________________________________________ Roanoke, Texas (March 14, 2019) - JSfirm.com was honored to attend the FAA presentation of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award on March 8, 2019. There, Ann Pellegreno was presented the most prestigious award the FAA can issue to pilots who have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years. In 1967, Pellegreno successfully flew a Lockheed 10 Electra on a world flight, closely mirroring Amelia Earhart's flight plan of 1937. On the 30th anniversary of Earhart's disappearance, Pellegreno personally dropped a wreath over tiny Howland Island, where Amelia Earhart was expected to arrive for refueling, but never arrived. Pellegreno then returned to Oakland, CA, completing the 28,000-mile flight on July 7, 1967. Her accomplishments were far reaching, as she became a top female influencer on the aviation scene. Pellegreno served on the Iowa Aeronautics Commission from 1974 to 1975 and on the Iowa Department of Transportation Commission from 1974 to 1976; she was the first woman in the nation to be appointed to a state DOT commission. Pellegreno has received the honors of being inducted into the Forest of Friendship at Atchison, the Kansas, Iowa and Michigan Aviation Halls of Fame, EAA Hall of Fame Antique/Classic Division, and the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame. In Atchison, Kansas, she received the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Aviation Achievement Award. From the Iowa DOT Aviation Division, she received the 2010 Outstanding Involvement in Aviation Award.

Lockheed L-10 Electra L-10 Electra/C-36 Amelia Earhart's Electra 10E Type Utility aircraft Manufacturer Lockheed Designed by Hall Hibbard Maiden flight 23 February 1934 Number built 149 Variants Electra Junior Super Electra The Lockheed L-10 Electra was a twin-engine, all-metal monoplane airliner developed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s to compete with the Boeing 247 and Douglas DC-2. Design and development Clarence "Kelly" Johnson testing an Electra model in the University of Michigan's wind tunnel. The Electra was Lockheed's first all-metal and twin-engine design. (However, some of Lockheed's wooden designs, such as the Orion had been built by Detroit Aircraft Corporation with metal fuselages.) The name Electra came from a star in the Pleiades. The prototype made its first flight on 23 February 1934 with Marshall Headle at the controls. Wind tunnel work on the Electra was undertaken at the University of Michigan. Much of the work was performed by a student assistant, Clarence Johnson. He suggested two changes be made to the design: changing the single tail to double tails (later a Lockheed trademark), and deleting oversized wing fillets. Both of these suggestions were incorporated into production aircraft. Upon receiving his master's degree, Johnson joined Lockheed as a regular employee, ultimately leading the Skunk Works in developing advanced aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird. 1 Operational history Aviatrix Amelia Earhart disappeared in a highly-modified Electra on an attempted around-the-world flight in 1937. Later in 1937, H.T. "Dick" Merrill and J.S.

  • The Women of Iowa's History
March 2021 THE WOMEN OF IOWA'S HISTORY At Chrysalis Foundation, we believe women and girls do remarkable things. Women’s achievements came to the forefront this year as we celebrated the inauguration of our country’s first female vice president. We’re proud to recognize March as Women’s History Month, raising awareness of pioneering women in history while encouraging girls to strive for their greatest potential. In 1987, Women’s History Month was formalized by Congress following the lead of Sonoma County, California, where Women’s History Week was celebrated in 1978. The observance coincides with International Women’s Day on March 8. For many reasons, the recognition of women’s history is critical. Women’s roles have appeared in only about 0.5 percent of historical records, even though statistically women have continuously comprised around 50 percent of the population. This imbalance, however, has not always been present. Over 90 percent of archeological discoveries before 5,000 B.C. were women, pointing to the central role women played in society thousands of years ago. For centuries, women were high priestesses, owned land, held wealth, and created beautiful art and poetry. But as society became more complex, progressed, physical strength became essential in order to expand, build, and conquer. This is when the balance of power shifted. Formidable male warriors appeared in both physical evidence and ancient records. History began being told and recorded from the standpoint of physical strength and power, and success was defined as military conquer and expansion. Women’s roles as historical figures were then diminished.
