A LIFE IN FILM: INGMAR BERGMAN Ceri Norman ! ! ! ! ! 'Actually it deals ("as usual" I was about to say!) with Life, Love and Death. Because nothing in fact is more important.' ‒Ingmar Bergman, letter to the crew of Face to Face (1976). ! Whether you love or hate Ingmar Bergman's work, you have to admit that he is a giant of Swedish cinema, television and theatre, whether as a writer, director, or as both. Bergman directed over sixty films and documentaries, some made for the cinema, others for television, many of which he also wrote, as well as over one hundred and seventy plays. Bergman was‒and still is, even after his passing‒one of the most influential film directors of all time, influencing the likes of Liv Ullman, Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, Ang Lee, and countless more. Bergman poured his own ideas, his own experiences and his heart into his work. He explored his own nature, his own psyche and desires through his films and plays, providing the viewer with an often unsettling and always challenging insight into Bergman's own mind and his own personal view of the world in which we all live. His reflective psychological explorations have created a plethora of cinematic masterpieces, ranging widely in genre and topic. We can follow his life, and understand the great man, through his films, as his life had a habit of continuously influencing his work.

  • Bergman Unrealised Films Thomson
Swedish Book Review 2018: 2, pp. 3-8 1! Love without Lovers, Words without Images: On Ingmar Bergman’s Unrealised Screenplays C. Claire Thomson Cinéphiles have many wistful words for abandoned film projects: unmade, unfinished, inachevé, orealiserad. The internet bristles with blogpages ranking the ‘best films never made’. A canon of lost masterpieces emerges from these exercises in melancholy: Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon, Orson Welles’ Heart of Darkness, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Idiot.1 In Scandinavia, Carl Th. Dreyer notoriously spent more than twenty years developing three passion projects: one on the life of Jesus, one on Mary Queen of Scots, and Medea, adapted for Danish public service broadcaster DR by Lars von Trier in 1988. But one name that rarely appears on such lists is Ingmar Bergman. Why would the unrealised films of the quintessential auteur escape such nostalgic ex- cesses? One reason might be Bergman’s unusual productivity. The Swede directed forty- five feature films to Tarkovsky’s seven and Kubrick’s thirteen, for example, and so even Bergman aficionados have sufficient extant treasures to keep them from speculating about what might have been. Perhaps, too, the late-blooming masterpiece Fanny & Alexander (1982) satisfyingly rounded off the arc of Bergman’s cinematic oeuvre as traced by film his- torians and fans. And his own quasi-autobiographical narrative was given a coda twenty years later; he directed Saraband (2003) on digital video at the age of eighty-five, explicitly addressing the ageing process in a kind of call-and-response to his own Scener ur ett äk- tenskap (Scenes from a Marriage, 1972) and his former lover Liv Ullmann’s re-working of the same in Trolösa (Faithless, 2000).

  • Bergman À La Mode Film Costumes for Leading Ladies
PRESSRELEASE September 2017 NEW EXHIBITION! Bergman à la mode Film costumes for leading ladies The exhibition Bergman à la mode will open at the Museum Hallwyl on November 10th. It will start the celebration of Ingmar Bergman, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on July 14th. The exhibition will connect to those of Bergman’s films, set during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. These productions also correspond timewise with the period during which the Hallwyl family lived and worked in their palace, before it was turned into a museum. Bergman à la mode pictures the central roles of women in Ingmar Bergman’s vast film pro- duction. The women in his films are sometimes referred to as the “Bergman female”. In his films, women bring in the colour, while the men make up a dark background, literally illuminating the women. A lot of characters join together to form the ”Bergman female”. Those are introduced through selected costumes from the films, displayed in the sleeping chambers of the museum. We will meet Bergman as a person and as an artist. Family pictures from his own childhood and growth display the parallels between Bergman’s life and the imaginary world he created. –The film costumes of Bergman have never before been displayed in this way. There is consi- derable research behind this exhibition. We have found costumes that have never been on display in public since the films were made. We are extra pleased to be able to exhibit costumes from Bergman’s black and white movies.

  • Cries and Whispers, 1972
Cries and Whispers, 1972 “Can’t anyone help me?” Major Credits Direction and Screenplay: Ingmar Bergman Cinematography: Sven Nykvist Cast: Harriet Andersson (Agnes), Kari Sylwan (Anna), Ingrid Thulin (Karin), Liv Ullmann (Maria/ The Mother), Erland Josephson (The Doctor), Henning Moritzen (Joakim, Maria’s husband), Georg Årlin (Fredrik, Karin’s husband), Anders Ek (Isak, the pastor), Linn Ullman (Maria’s daughter) Production Background Considered by many historians to be his masterpiece, Cries and Whispers followed a series of box office disappointments culminating in Bergman’s first English language film, the critically reviled The Touch (1971). The director retreated to Fårö to compose the scenario—as was now his habitual practice, in the form of a story—in a mood of depression and total isolation. Because Svensk Filmindustri and his former international backers would not provide sufficient financing, Bergman took the unusual step of offering his cast and crew shares in the film’s profits in return for working without salary. (The scheme worked out well for all concerned.) Also unusual for Bergman, the film was shot entirely on location at an abandoned manor house on Lake Mälaren, about 35 miles south of Stockholm. According to all reports, Bergman’s spirits had revived—he had fallen in love with Ingrid von Rosen, soon to become his last wife—and the shooting proceeded with exceptional care and conviviality. Two of his daughters appear in the film. The three sisters in the story were longstanding friends and colleagues, and the newcomer—Kari Sylwan, making her first screen appearance—quickly earned their admiration. Sven Nyquist, shooting his 14th Bergman film, won an Academy Award for cinematography.
