Perspective on Life before and after John and Mary Poole

We all grow up with the weight of history on us. Our ancestors dwell in the attics of our brains as they do in the spiraling chains of knowledge hidden in every cell of our bodies.

POOLE FAMILY ANCESTRY: Perspective on Life before and after John and Mary Poole 2013

Introduction

A substantial amount of history (1703-2013), spanning 310 years, has been resurrected and assembled surrounding the Poole family in America and our journey through slavery in Alabama. Providence brought together a house servant named Jennie and a plantation owner named James William T. Poole, producing a Mulatto son, John Poole, who married Mary Porter after the Civil War. John Poole and Mary Porter Poole had nine children, and those nine produced 62 grandchildren. The “Poole” foundation was established and is well on its way – however, a detailed chronicle of the dreams, contributions and tribulations of our ancestors and their descendants was not left behind. This gives us purpose to learn the truth of their stories and we are eager to refurbish our family manuscript. For the first time we are able to look both forward and backward on Jennie’s life. Forward into her elderly years, and backward to the Virginia birthplace of her parents. We can trace the family of James William T. Poole back to the early 1700’s in Virginia. These pages are filled with details and records that reveal so much of our personal history – more than has been previously known.

In this document you may see variations in dates and names. During the last century, official or personal records were not often kept. Especially evident was the failure to formally record births and deaths. The much relied upon census records often have errors due to illiterate census takers or poor penmanship. Some confusion was due to Black Brogue, slang and Ebonics (of that era), originally created to encrypt information from plantation owners and the law. The information here has been checked as close as possible. If you discover errors, omissions, or want to expand on something, please let us know. Our locations are diverse and we currently have Poole families composing their homes in over 32 contiguous states, D.C., Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and on 4 or 5 continents – with descendants that are African, Indian, Mexican, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Filipino, Russian, Portuguese, and other ethnic backgrounds. Poole descendants have served our country honorably in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other conflicts. Our occupations include Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, Farmers, Entrepreneurs, Professional Athletes, Teachers, Professors, School Principals, Airline Pilots, Nurses, Truckers, Electricians, Administrators, Firemen, Military Retirees, Morticians, Sanitation Engineers, Aircraft Designers, Assembly Workers, Ministers and others too numerous to list here.

I believe much of our history can be unearthed through research of old family records such as bibles, photos, obituaries, certificates, diplomas, and stories passed on by word of mouth. Although stories tend to change a little each time they are retold, I think it is better to have some of the story no matter how tainted it may be than to not know any of it. I hope after reviewing this it will motivate each of you to dig a little and help collect historical and ancestral information. I’m sure you have items of interest or photos you have never thought about or know others who do. It’s important to act soon because we are losing matriarchs and patriarchs often and their knowledge and 5

POOLE FAMILY ANCESTRY: Perspective on Life before and after John and Mary Poole 2013 experience go with them. Let this be a commitment to record and document the continuing journey our forefathers began. It is my hope we can bond together and gather whatever information is still available and share and record it. Please contact us by e-mail, phone, Poole Ancestry site, or mail. We will record or copy the information, photos, or stories you may have, no matter how small or insignificant you may think it is. We are fortunate to have so much technology available that makes communication simple and easy. Let’s give the next generations something to add to and a past to reflect on so they can see and understand the significant accomplishments, contributions, and impact of the “Poole’s”.

ABOUT POOLE ANCESTRY Facebook Site The success of the POOLE ANCESTRY Facebook site is due to a diverse gender and age group of friendly, imaginative, thoughtful, funny, hard-working, generous, faithful, charitable and sharing Poole’s. We wish to thank and recognize the motivation and resolve of our Poole family members who eagerly and immediately connected with the social site, exchanging information and inviting even MORE family to join.

It is especially important to note that modern technology plays a major role in the communication of the Poole family today. Under the leadership of Delbert Poole, a few cousins refreshed the online interaction with relatives in June 2012. E-mail correspondence was established and two Facebook sites were hosted; Poole Ancestry, for general communications and Poole Family Ancestry, for family background. Many of the ancestry postings include internet links to genealogy records and we receive frequent radio and video links, connecting us with the lives and interests of family members.

Since the introduction of the Poole Ancestry site, there has been a continuous communication flow, delivering a stream of African American artwork, accompanied by inspirational quotes, a timeline of African American History and images, National and Cultural Holiday Recognition, News and Current Events, Vintage Family Photos and Poole History Research.

We have a commitment to do a better job of spreading family history within and between our families. So many stories were told that are now due to be re-told for future generations. We encourage everyone to collect their precious memories and memorabilia, and 1) Write it down 2) ID your photos and 3) Develop connections with relatives near and far.

On occasion, I am very proud and happy to post news, about someone, that I have known, in good standing, throughout the years, of my life. REV. MOSES L. HARVILL, Pastor, Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church

By Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church Family

We certainly give God all the praise and glory for sending His chosen vessels, the Rev. Moses L. Harvill and Sister Eledia Harvill to the Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church family. The Rev. Moses L. Harvill and the former Eledia Soni Camp arrived at Cross Street May 30, 1993 to pastor their first church. As we look at their 16 years of leadership one can only stand in awe as to the many great moves of God we have witnessed through their ministry. In the book of Chronicles, the tribe of Issachar understood the signs of the time and gave godly counsels for what should be done. Rev. and Mrs. Harvill’s ministry has been one of discerning the times and giving godly wisdom as to what must be done. The arrival of Rev. and Sister Harvill has brought about a new level of ministry, which has constantly moved the church forward. Their ministry reaches beyond the walls of Cross Street. Sister Harvill serves as New England Conference, Conference President of the Minister’s Wives and Spouses Ministry and with the Missionary Society as Chairman of the Life Members Committee. She also served as the Co-Chair for Unity Sunday Day Ministry. Pastor Harvill is involved in several community Boards: H.O.P.E., Inc., Jones Fund, and the Ministerial Alliance. Rev. and Mrs. Harvill’s labors of love are immeasurable. The time, energy and sacrifices they make daily on behalf of the church family and community will never be fully recorded here on earth. Their life is their testimony. They follow Christ and we are pleased to follow them.

DR. MALIK R. WATKINS, Retired Savannah State University Educator and former acting President of Savannah State University

November 9, 2012 Carl Vinson Institute of Government, University of Georgia

For the second time in five years, Public Service Associate Malik R. Watkins won a Fulbright Specialist appointment that extends his work in the Institute's Governmental Services and Research Division. Watkins collaborated with officials in the Central American municipality of Panama City to draft an efficient service-delivery blueprint during a four-week assignment. The capital city is taking over public services once provided by the Panamanian federal government, and Watkins's role as a visiting Fulbright Specialist was to help create a plan to guide the development of a prototype geographic information system to support service delivery. "The central government of Panama essentially was providing all the services to the cities of Panama," said Watkins. "The central government cannot deal with these responsibilities like the local governments can." Improved municipal services are a critical component for dealing with an influx of job-seekers who have flooded the area, hoping to secure work on a Panama Canal expansion. Watkins spent much of September and part of October assisting municipal officials, his second overseas assignment as a Fulbright Specialist. In 2007, Watkins traveled to West Africa to work on a Fulbright project with the Liberia Institute of Public Administration. The Fulbright Specialist Program, administered for the U.S. State Department by the nonprofit Council for International Exchange of Scholars, promotes partnerships between U.S. experts and academics at host institutions overseas. Selected specialists two to six weeks overseas, collaborating on development-related projects with local faculty and technicians.

Taking Ownership: Moving the Black Community Towards the Task This book is available for download on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iBooks and on your computer with iTunes. Books must be read on an iOS device.

Traditionally, American Blacks have been one of the most consistently conservative groups in the United States. But, because politics has become more of a marketing mechanism utilized to steer a susceptible electorate, Black political actions reflect less upon traditional values and more upon compensation based sensitivities to a historical identity. With the significant progress Blacks have experienced over the past several decades, Taking Ownership represents the need to shift Black identity away from its reactive base and towards a proactive avenue that brings forth those historical values that held communities together during the most oppressive years. The ‘Race Experts’ and Political Consultants may continue to manipulate the electorate; however Taking Ownership moves us away from a focus on shallow political victories and towards the reality of functioning in an ever more competitive global market place.

POOLE FAMILY BUSINESS HONORS: Minding Their Own Business… for 77 years!

www.poolefuneralchapel.com

Poole Funeral Home opened in Birmingham in a converted two-story house located at 1113 Seventh Avenue, North in 1936. Founded by James "Jim" Poole, the business continued at this location until May of 1952 when it was relocated to its present site at 1501 Seventh Avenue, North.

Jim Poole was working as a coal miner when he decided to fulfill a life-long dream and become an undertaker. With no prior experience, he set out to learn his trade and to establish a successful business. Jim and his sons began by becoming associated with Whiteside Funeral Home of Fairfield, Alabama. That association produced a new entity, Poole and Whiteside Funeral Home. Shortly thereafter, Jim decided to go out on his own.

With the help of his two sons, Ernest and John, Jim established Poole Funeral Home. Initially, his two sons helped out but continued to work in the coal mines as a way to subsidize the family income. Initially, the business utilized the services of a trade embalmer who worked for several funeral homes. The need for this service ended when Ernest completed program requirements for national licensure at Welch's School of Embalming at Miles College of Birmingham. Eventually Ernest and, later, John quit the mines to devote their energies to the business on a full time basis. Jim's wife, Laura, also helped out as a casket liner and florist.

The secret of Jim Poole's success lay in his commitment to his community. People in the rural mining communities knew Jim Poole and they liked him. He had a reputation for helping people in need. The Poole home was a focal point for the community, and neighbors brought their problems to him in the belief that he could straighten out just about anything. In the evenings, the Poole front porch was a popular gathering point for listening to the radio, as well as for news as Jim or his sons read the evening paper to those who came around.

Everyone in the family helped, including Jim's daughter and son-in-law, Minnie and Alexander Frazier, and, as employees were added, they became one of the family, with Laura Poole cooking and feeding everyone. Jim continued to devote himself to helping those in need. He became known as someone who provided more than funerals. He sponsored youth baseball teams, gave people rides to the doctors' offices, bought shoes and school books for needy children, and sponsored gospel programs. Also, funeral home facilities were used for community meetings, gospel singing group's practices, community programs, and church services for several local congregations.

Jim Poole's generosity even extended to his competitors. When he opened his business there was tough competition from a half dozen other funeral homes, all within a five to six block area. Jim loaned hearses, funeral directors, embalmers and equipment to other undertakers and never failed to help anyone who asked. Rather than hurting business, his generosity enhanced his reputation and was mutually beneficial. His business philosophy was simple: "If people want to do business with you, they will. If they don't, nothing you can do will satisfy them". Today, many practicing funeral directors, embalmers, and funeral home owners in the state got their start at Poole's.

Business operations peaked in the late 1940's, 1950's and early 1960's. During this period, Poole's became nationally known for handling as many as 1,100 cases per year. Many Saturdays and Sundays, funeral services would be conducted in both chapels every hour on the hour. At the same time, funerals were also being conducted in outlying areas, such as Bradford, Brent, Centreville, Dora, Jasper, Leeds, Margaret, New Castle, Praco, West Blocton, Vance, and Shelby County. At its peak, the staff consisted of eighteen drivers, six embalmers, numerous funeral directors, and a secretary in addition to the family members working at the funeral home. On Mother's Day, 1952, an Open House was held at the new location, and on that Sunday, seven funeral services were scheduled for that day. The official name was changed to Poole's Funeral Chapels, Inc. 14

About Me: 2009 “My full name is Blair Joshua Carr. Whenever you see me you might think of me as a very serious and grave person. This is true for the most part, but a few people who get to see me when I’m not in public (mostly my family) have the privilege of seeing my goofy side. Yes a goofy side does exist. I like to sing and dance and roll around on the floor (especially in front of my grandma). I’m very simple and easy to please. Like most men, I have "a thing" for younger women, but recently I have developed quite the appetite for older women. I think that women in their late 30's and early 40's are very attractive. The perfect amount of aging (or wrinkles) gives their face a mature look that I think is one the prettiest things ever. They would have a young man such as myself to believe that they're self-conscious, but I know for certain that a fine woman knows how fine she truly is. Anyways, I attend an awesome church (First Apostolic Church of Maryville). I also I love to rap and write songs. Pretty much, I have told you all that I think is good for you to know about me for now.” – BJC

February 23, 2013 – “Thank you God for the many Blessings of my life. As I realize my fifty-ninth year on Earth, I praise Your name Dear Lord. Thank you for this time I am enjoying with my husband, children, grandchildren and family. Thank you for the friendships with my cousins. For many years in my youth, I believed my family would be lost from my life, never to be redeemed – partly due to my reluctance and neglect. By Your grace I will look my mother and father in the face when we meet in Heaven and tell them how I tried.” – PDS

CEE DUB (Christopher L. Wallace), Fayetteville, NC Cee Dub is a man of many interests and talents who is devoted to family and committed to lifting the bar on parenting of his two young boys. He joined Facebook in 2005 and has a network of over 700 friends. An exceptional writer, Cee Dub expresses his thoughts in a “Reflective moment on Parenting”: by Cee Dub (Notes) on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 9:01am…“As I've told many people before, there is no hands-on manual for parenting. Parenting is very instinctive and you learn a lot about yourselves through the immense challenges of parenting. And I say this because I learned something else about my parenting this morning. Every Friday, the trash man comes early in the morning to pick up the garbage while I'm getting the boys ready for school. And almost everytime, my 3-year old Ren runs furiously to a window (whether it’s up or downstairs) to see the trashman pick up the trash---he's just yelling and screaming and just flat out excited. Then what do I do? I yell at him and say "Get out that window...go put your shoes on...go finish brushing your teeth...eat your breakfast...stop playing around so much or we are going to be late for school." And for those 10 or 20 seconds that follow, I just watch him fold into a cocoon of sorts because of what I've done. His face displays an emotion of sadness and his shoulders slump as if he watched his favorite toy get given away. It wasn't until this morning, however, that I realized something THAT small means so much! His desire to run and see the trash truck is basically the equivalent to me running to see my favorite team play or me getting paid, etc., etc. It puts you on a proverbial high and I essentially had been snatching that away from him. So when Ren walked away in sadness this morning because of me asking him to remove himself from that window, I intentionally expedited our process of getting ready for school/work and scampered out to the truck just so I could catch up with the garbage man before he left the neighborhood. And at the top of the neighborhood, there he was. That stinky ol garbage truck that my son ALWAYS runs to see and my son was strapped into his seat screaming "Dayeeeeeee Dayeeeeeee look at that truck! It's BIGGGGGGG dayeeeeeeeee...WOW! I love trucks!" I know that may seem small and insignificant to some, but as a growing parent and role model to my sons, that moment of reflection meant the world to me and provided me with the knowledge that I still have plenty of work to do to be a better part. This morning was a good start!” – CLW

Sam and Sid (pampered dogs) are happy that Brandon and Blair are here. Both Sid and Sam are sleeping upstairs in the hallway outside the boys' bedrooms. LOL!!!. I'm so sleepy, but I'm afraid if I go to sleep right now, I'll be late for graduation which happens to be all the way in Hampton-DAMN. : ) April 22, 2013: Have you ever taken a test and wondered why the heck you studied when you could have been napping or watching one of your favorite shows? POOLE FAMILY ROOTS: Digging into our History

POOLE - The origin of the surname Definition: From the Old English "pol," meaning pool, the POOLE surname referred to one who lived near a small body (or pool) of water.

Surname Origin: English Alternate Surname Spellings: POOL, POLE, POLES, POLL, POLLE ~~ U.S. History Fact: During the Civil War (1861-1865), there were 886 Poole’s enlisted in the military. 500 fought for the Union, 386 fought as Confederates. ~~ Our feet are firmly planted: Montgomery, Alabama

Decades of history come full circle in Montgomery, Ala. The pursuit of equal rights for all people links many of the city's historic events, from the controversy over slavery that launched the Civil War, to the civil rights movement of the 20th century; the events and places of Montgomery's past and future seem destined to meet up with each other.

Starting with the Civil War Montgomery made an early footprint on the United States just before and right at the start of the Civil War. The telegraph that ordered the first gunshots of the war came from Montgomery. After Alabama and other states seceded from the Union, Confederate leaders met here to form a new government.

The delegates who helped form the Confederacy needed a leader; Jefferson Davis was their man. He became president of the Confederate states atop the steps of the Alabama state capitol building. While in Montgomery, Jefferson and Mrs. Davis made their home in a White House—not the one many of us recognize today, but the First White House of the Confederacy. A sharp history buff will notice that there's also a White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, Va., but the distinction is in the name in this instance: the First White House of the Confederacy is in Montgomery. 33

POOLE FAMILY ANCESTRY: Perspective on Life before and after John and Mary Poole 2013

Inklings of the Future Few people may realize that San Francisco’s signature streetcars did not originate there; Montgomery introduced the entire world to the first electric streetcar system in the late 1800s. Perhaps the streetcars were a sign of things to come: in 1896, the Supreme Court handed down the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling, containing the notion of "separate but equal" facilities for white and African American citizens. Rather than live with segregation on a transportation system, African Americans boycotted streetcars all across the South. A few of the boycotts were quite successful.

The Bus Stops Here It was time for a boycott again when, in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to another white passenger. Parks set tremendous forces in motion with her act of defiance that day. She was arrested for failing to adhere to the principles of segregation and it wasn't long before empty buses roamed Montgomery's streets. African Americans who supported Parks walked wherever they needed to go. "Voices of the boycott" were speaking out against the years of discrimination endured in the United States. The civil rights movement had fully begun. Today a museum for the "mother of the civil rights movement" honors Parks for her civil disobedience that day.

Civil rights activists looked for symbolism in their protests. They marched from Selma to Montgomery, publicly—but nonviolently— displaying their desire for a redress of the crimes against them. With the help of non-discriminatory organizations such as the St. Jude Catholic Hospital, along with a brave federal judge in Montgomery, Martin Luther King Jr. was able to lead a following of 25,000 marchers to the steps of Montgomery's capitol building—many decades later on the grounds where Jefferson Davis once stood. The march brought results: President Lyndon B. Johnson would later sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a major civil rights bill that successfully made it through Congress.

Montgomery Today Montgomery is a city with more than just an early chapter in civil rights history. Cultural festivals, theatrical performances, beautifully landscaped parks, and even a “Broadway Under the Stars” program showcase the modern, ever-changing, and trendy parts of the city. Montgomery hosts one of the 10 largest Shakespeare festivals in the world; a memorial for famed country singer Hank Williams; a Hyundai Motor Manufacturing and Assembly plant; and an Air Force base that was once the site of a flight school operated by the Wright brothers.

SUMMER MEMORIES IN THE HOME OF GRANDPA ISAIAH AND GRANDMA MARY ALICE POOLE

Grandpa Isaiah and Grandma Mary Alice Poole lived in Tulare, California on Peanut Street. Their three bedroom house was roomy and may have served as a retirement home for the couple when they moved there from P Street, after all their children were grown.

The Poole family had lived together on several farms in California where Isaiah and Mary Alice raised their six children: Clara, George, Mildred, Raymond, Walter and Charles.

The youngest son, Charles was our father, and my sister Gwyn and I were among the youngest grandchildren. Isaiah and Mary Alice were in their mid-fifties when we were born.

Grandpa was a tall and solidly built man with dark skin and chiseled features that cradled his warm eyes. Grandma was a large woman with a soft brown smiling face. During the time we knew her, she carried over 400 pounds on her medium frame. Grandma suffered from physical ailments, such as arthritis and high blood pressure -- and given her weight, certainly there may have been more.

Their house was always clean and orderly. Grandma washed dishes after every meal and cleaned all of her work spaces before she left them. All of the walls in their home were painted with strong colors, such as olive green, dark magenta, hot pink and bright yellow – there was not a white or cream wall in the house.

The elderly couple were early risers and began their day around 5:00 a.m. Grandma used a wooden cane to steady herself as she moved from one room to the other. Once she reached a room, she would pull up her chair and situate it where most household items would be within her reach. In the morning she would mildly sigh as she went about her daily chores. She would say in a soft voice, “Grandma’s knees / ankles / feet are hurting her today”, and then not speak another word of complaint the rest of the day.

They started their day with a BIG breakfast. Grandma would keep us girls occupied in the kitchen by instructing us where to find certain items she would be using to cook. She would prepare a full “farmers” breakfast, consisting of a variety of foods such as catfish, fried chicken, pork chops, bacon, eggs, grits, potatoes, and biscuits. Table spices and garnishes were homemade butters, jellies, chowchow, and hot sauce.

We would all sit at the table together for breakfast, and when we were done, Grandpa went out into the yard and he wouldn’t come back inside to rest until dinner time. Visitors of every ethnic background would drive by and stop their cars or trucks in front of the house and give him a “hollar”. They laughed and exchanged pleasantries – everyone would inquire about Mary Alice. While in the yard, Grandpa tended his vegetable garden and fruit trees. When Grandma sent us into the yard for fresh air, we would follow Grandpa while he told us the names of his plants and trees and when they were expected to flower or produce. Grandpa would remind us not to step on certain yard plants and caution us from touching various trees and bushes. Grandpa raised chickens and geese on the property for eating purposes.

Inside the comfortable house, soft pillows covered every chair and couch. There was a story to be told about all of the wall decorations, candy dishes, figurines, and pillows – most every treasure was a gift from their children and their families. Grandma had a big white doll with curly blond hair which she named “Caroline”, who occupied a permanent seat on the living room couch. A family member had given it to her as a special gift. This was a plastic doll – called a “walking doll”, because it was over two feet tall and when it stood upright on the floor, you could take its hand and walk it across the floor. Grandma would dress Caroline in different clothes, comb her hair and admire her. Although I am sure EVERY girl grandchild asked Grandma if they could play with Caroline, the answer was always “No”. Grandma would tell us to only look at her…she didn’t want her to get broken. I would ask Grandma at least ten times a day if I could play with her (hoping because I was the baby girl - I might be her most favorite grandchild and she would miraculously consent). Grandma would look at me with understanding and softly repeat, “No”.

I always took an interest in Grandma’s sewing corner. I couldn’t understand just how she organized it, but she would reach into her separate bags and pull out old jeans, shirts, dresses, etc. for her quilt making. She would cut and measure her fabric, talking all the while. After she threaded her sewing machine, Grandma would stay in that spot for hours, just going about her sewing work and churning out quilt after quilt.

Grandma was a true believer in religious healers. She would listen to preachers on the radio and watch evangelists’ on television. We knew she believed that some of her medical ailments would be cured through faith.

At bedtime we slept in the magenta room, FULL of old clothes and souvenirs belonging to her family. Grandma would tell us, “these clothes belong to so-and-so, this thing is so-and-so’s” – and the item would stay in her home until they came back to claim it. When it was time to sleep, my imagination came alive with all of the shadows and hanging articles that seemed to float around the room. I was always sure there was something moving in the closet! The best Grandma would do to ease my complaining was to open the room door a crack, instead of shutting it completely.

The home was generally very quiet, and Grandma would caution us not to make a lot of noise and disturb Grandpa in his chair. They must have enjoyed watching our growth from year to year – wondering what we city girls (Sacramento) could possibly say next. Grandma let us talk to her until our hearts content and she would just listen and laugh as we went on to the next subject. I was twelve when Grandpa died. Grandma moved from their home to Richmond and stayed with her oldest daughter Clara until her death 2 years later. Clara and her husband Pete kept that home in Tulare for over 25 years.

Poole… Who I Am… CHRISTOPHER L. WALLACE My parents are Christopher and Gloria Wallace. I used to work as a communications intern with the NFL's Carolina Panthers back in 04-05 and was a community sports reporter for the local newspaper (The News & Record) back in 2004. My service to the community now includes service as the Communiversity and Undergraduate Programs Director at UNC Chapel Hill. There, I manage a program that serves students in grades K-5 who have been selected by schools to serve in our Communiversity program primarily because of academic or cultural enrichment needs.

Our curriculum focuses primarily on cultural enrichment and homework assistance as we expose these students to opportunities that they may, otherwise, not have. I've now been at UNC for about 9 months. Prior to that, I served 4 and a half years at an agency called the Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro. There, we served students who were deemed "at-risk" of academic failure and also planned and executed service to the community such as community park cleanups, feeding the homeless projects and much more. While working with the students, we provided homework assistance and academic skill-building.

My primary focus tends to be African-American boys, who per data and studies, appear to consistently trail their peers in academic achievement levels and that crap has to stop at some point. We have to be bigger, stronger and more responsive to the needs of our community and actually listen/be there for our students. Half the battle is actually showing up.

Poole… Who I Am… PAMALA (POOLE) SPRINGS My parents are Charles Poole and Wilma Wilson. I grew up in San Jose, CA, married, raised three children and worked for over 20 years at technology corporations and start-up’s in Silicon Valley. I later moved to San Joaquin County and spent several years working in property management. Today, I work as the founder of PRIDE Museum, a nonprofit for technology and science education that serves K-12 youth in the Bay Area and now have three grandchildren.

Poole… Who I Am… CHARLES RALO ANTHONY I am Charles Anthony, the great grandson of Elisha Dillard and Sarah Myrick Poole. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and grew up in the Bay Area, California. I attended college at Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana, earning a Bachelor's of Art in Mass Communications. My first job was as a news reporter/writer for newspapers in Atlanta and in Oakland. I'm married to my wonderful wife, Anjanette, and have two small children, Ezekiel, and Alanji. I currently work for as a Facilities Manager for TELUS International in Las Vegas. We love to travel, cook and party of course! So happy to be a part of this family. I love you all even if I do not know you personally!!

JOHN AND MARY (PORTER) POOLE FAMILY in 1890

John Poole and all his children were surely overcome with grief at the loss of Mary (Porter) Poole, in 1890, at the young age of 36. Nonetheless, the family had to push on to make it through this difficult time. The children she left behind were the following ages:

SAMUEL, age 21 (was married by age 21, with children) JERRY, age 19 (was married by age 18) WILLIAM, age 18 (would marry at age 35) ELLA, age 13 (would marry by age 19) ISAIAH, age 11 (would marry by age 29) PRECILLA, age 9 (would marry by age 20) MARY LOU, age 6 (would marry by age 15) CHESTER, age 4 (would marry by age 22) JAMES, age 2 (would marry by age 21)

Eldest son, Samuel took Chester into his household and six years later when eldest daughter Ella married, she took James into her household.

It is unknown exactly when Jerry and William died. Ella passed away in 1909 at the young age of 32. Interesting fact: Each of the remaining children passed away 10 years apart; Isaiah – 1934, Mary Lou – 1944, Chester – 1954, Samuel (eldest) and James (youngest) – 1964, and Precilla – 1974.

We use ancestry documents, Marriage and Census records, to follow the children in their adulthood and glimpse at their growing families.

WHEN COTTON WAS “KING”

Of the 3.2 million slaves working in the 15 slave states in 1850, 1.8 million worked in cotton. No wonder the dominant motto of the era was "Cotton is King!" Cotton produced by slave labor was so profitable that it would take a costly Civil War, and the loss of more than 600,000 lives, to end it.

The more money the planters made from cotton, the more cotton they wanted to grow. The more cotton the planters wanted to grow, the more slaves they needed to grow the cotton. Slaves in the Upper South had become extremely valuable commodities. Their owners, whose tobacco plantations were no longer, say, sufficiently profitable, sold them south, in droves.

Most of us are familiar with the dreadful Trail of Tears, which in 1838 removed the last of the Chickasaw, the Cherokee, the Creek, the Choctaw and the Seminoles from the region of the South known as the "black belt," resettling them to "Indian Territory," which became the state of Oklahoma in 1907. Ever wonder why this was necessary? In a word, cotton. These Native American people were living on what was perhaps the richest cotton soil in the world. And their removal, following the Louisiana Purchase, created a scramble to settle their lands and raise cotton, leading to one of the greatest periods in economic expansion and profitability in American history.

The number of slaves needed in the new states of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, where cotton reigned, increased by an average of 27.5 percent each decade, demanding that entire families be relocated from plantations in the East and Upper South. Southern slave prices more than tripled, rising from $500 in New Orleans in 1800, to $1,800 by 1860 (the equivalent of $30,000 in 2005).

TRACING POOLE HISTORY IN AMERICA

From 1700 to 1740 an estimated 43,000 slaves were imported into Virginia, and almost all but 4,000 were imported directly from Africa. The Africans arrived with an extremely diverse range of cultural backgrounds.

Our African and European bloodlines may have crossed as early as the 1700’s, in Virginia, when Caucasian ancestors participated as plantation owners (planters) in slave ownership for tobacco trade, many arriving from Europe with their extended names of “Vanderpool” or “Liverpool”.

Since the 1700’s, the surname, Poole, has populated the U.S. in all of the 15 states of the Union in which slavery was legal before the Civil War, which includes: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The great majority of Southern farmers in America owned no slaves or only a handful. The Caucasian Poole bloodline is rooted with William "The Joyner" Poole, Sr. (born in 1703, VA). "The Joyner" is in reference to his trade as a "joiner or carpenter". It is undetermined exactly when Poole’s entered into slave commerce, but eventually Poole’s were in the midst of the majority of slaveholders who held 10 or fewer slaves, as well as among “medium planters”, owning between 16 and 50 slaves. Poole’s were active partners in plantation economy, producing cotton, tobacco, indigo and rice, along with like-minded farmers/confederates, neighbors/in-laws and slave holders/traders – moving their slave property from one farm to the next, between the slave states, disenfranchising and dislocating black families.

History of Jennie Poole (1825-1919): The Slave Mother of our ancestor John Poole

We are carefully weaving together the story of Jennie’s long life – she lived to the age of 91. For the first time we are able to look both forward and backward on Jennie’s life. Forward into her elderly years, and backward to the birthplace of her parents.

Currently, we are able to locate details for “Jennie Poole” on three Alabama documents; 1850, 1870 and 1900. We know she is a Black woman from America, ancestry records show Jennie was born in April 1825, in Alabama. Both of her parents were Americans, born in Virginia.

In 1850, we presume Jennie is at the Poole Plantation, living among the black household (one of the female slaves recorded between the ages of 20-30), with her son John Poole (Mulatto), abt. age 7.

In 1870, Jennie is 45 years old, working as a Domestic Servant. She speaks English and does not read or write. Within the household is a young white girl, Lyda, age 7, and a young white boy, Bright, age 14, who works as a farm laborer.

In 1900, Jennie is 75 years old, widowed and lives alone as head of household. She is the mother of five children – three are living. She speaks English, but does not read or write. She works in the House (not Field) and is Rented (not Owned).

History of John Poole (1844-1926) and Mary (Porter) Poole

In 1870, the year of their marriage, the young couple, John and Mary (Porter) Poole are farm laborers on the Poole plantation with an infant child. It is 5 years beyond Emancipation and John was given land by his father, James William Thomas Poole (from Poole oral history). John is now a landowner and the head of his household.

In 1880, we find that John and Mary (Porter) Poole have remained on the Poole plantation property in Union Academy, Montgomery, Alabama -- living and farming the plantation property #106. The family has grown and he and Mary live there with their five children; Samuel, Jerry, Willie, Ella and Isaiah. John’s race is recorded as “Mulatto”, reinforcing the fact he is a son of the slave master.

John and Mary remain together for 10 more years, until Mary’s death in 1890, at age 36. No records for John Poole have been found over the span of 20 years (1890-1910).

We located a 1920 census with John Poole (Mulatto) at age 75, and his second wife, Fannie Poole (Mulatto) at age 83 (eight years his senior). They live alone in the household in Montgomery, AL. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXDC-9JR

Mary (Porter) Poole (1854–1890) No known photo

Our ancestor, Mary (Porter) Poole married John Poole on Dec. 23, 1870, in Montgomery, Alabama. Through their union, they produced nine children; Samuel, Jerry, William, Ella, Isaiah, Priscilla, Mary Lou, Chester and James, all born free.

Excerpted from A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE POOLE FAMILY, by Caroline Victor (abt.) 1990 “John Poole met and married Mary Porter, a former slave from a different plantation. She was part Native American. Whether she was of Creek or Seminole descent is not entirely clear at this time. Mary Porter Poole died at the young age of 36. Chester Poole was 4 at the time of his mother’s death and remembered standing in the doorway (he was not allowed in the room) while she lay dying. When asked to describe her, he said she was a little person.”

ORIGINS OF SEMINOLE INDIANS The Seminole are originally of Florida, who now reside primarily there and in Oklahoma. The Seminole nation emerged out of groups of Native Americans; most significantly Creek from what is now Georgia and Alabama, who settled in Florida in the early 18th century.

ORIGINS OF CREEK INDIANS The Muscogee (or Muskogee), also known as the Creek or Creeks, are a Native American people traditionally from the southeastern United States, living primarily in Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Official Death Certificates for Jennie Poole and John Poole

March, 2012, the Birth and Death Certificates for Jennie Poole and John Poole were requested from Montgomery County Vital Records. No birth records were found. Montgomery, AL did not record births before 1908. The Death Certificates were received and the documents prompted more questions and led to several conclusions. The research is ongoing, and if anyone has any information – no matter how small – please help by letting us know. There may be family members who have visited the grave with their parents or relatives.

1916, JENNIE POOLE It appears Jennie’s death certificate was filled in with sparing details – just enough to bury her. There is a big age difference, perhaps someone simply guessed and we reasoned she may not have looked her age. The document gives her age as 80, however, she was born in 1825 and would have been 91 years old at her death in 1916. The town of her death was recorded as RAMER, AL; Ramer is an unincorporated community located in Montgomery County, Alabama. Given that Jennie's parents were from Virginia, it’s possible they were on a Poole plantation (Poole's resided in all 13 slavery states) and were transported to Alabama, where Jennie was born.

1926, JOHN POOLE John’s document shows he lived in town three years prior to his death, at 1508 50th St. North, Birmingham, AL. He was widowed at the time of his death in 1926, outlasting his second wife, Fannie. His burial was handled by undertaker, Davenport & Harris. Davenport and Harris Funeral Home Incorporated was established in 1899 and is the oldest African American family owned and operated business in the state of Alabama. We called for John’s burial records and were told they don’t have records dating back that far and they did not begin keeping records until 1960. We were referred to two cemeteries, George Washington Carter Memorial Garden (largest) and Shadow Lawn, however, they had no records.

History of James William Thomas Poole: Plantation and Slave owner

The recorded worth of real estate and personal estate of James WT Poole, Plantation Owner

DURING SLAVERY: An 1860 census record lists James WT Poole as an Alabama Farmer with property worth $4,000. Does that make him a rich man for his time? It appears he is in great financial health in 1860, (the equivalent of $70,000 in 2005). We know his property is worth twice the amount of anyone else on the census page, with the average worth for others between $200 - $500. JWT Poole is the only person listed in the household at the time of census. We’re not sure when he arrived in Alabama from his former home and birthplace of South Carolina, but we know he was married in this year to his second wife.

AFTER SLAVERY (ended 1865): A decade later, an 1870 census record shows us his household consists of nine members. His real estate worth is now $6,000 and the value of his personal estate is $2500. Only one other household on the entire census page can show property worth (the South has been pulverized by war!), and they value their real estate at $800 and personal estate at $200.

Another decade passes, and in 1880, James WT Poole would be passed and buried. Shortly following the Civil War, the U.S. census discontinues recording property and asset worth for households. We are unable to determine through census records whether the family managed to keep the property worth intact.

James WT Poole Family Household

YEAR 1870: Plantation owner James WT Poole is age 59. His household consists of wife Sarah “Sally Ann”, age 28, children ranging in age from 2-9, mother-in-law, Mary Lasiter, age 60, and a female “Anderson”, age 20. There are many other Anderson’s and Lassiter’s on adjoining farms. Emancipation of slavery has now been in effect for five years. The 1870 U.S. census form, (first one issued following slavery), is redesigned to collect only the names of household members.

1870 Census: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11848-102540-90?cc=1438024&wc=1599202

YEAR 1880: James WT Poole is age 69, wife Sarah A. “Sally Ann” is age 36, and children range in age from 11-15. There is a nephew Edward, age 21, and mother-in-law, Mary Lasister, age 75. It is very interesting to find -- for the first time - - Jeff, age 50 years is a Black servant, included in the household census. Former slaves are found living on adjoining farmland. Plantation owner, James WT Poole (died 1880) has given land to his Mulatto son – our ancestor, John Poole (from Poole oral history). John lives there, working as a farmer, alongside his family, ON HIS OWN LAND! Other former slaves are also farming the land, which may have been a very safe option in war torn Alabama.

YEAR 1920: Sarah A. “Sally Ann” (Lassiter) Poole (age 77) is living at home with her son Claude Poole (age 51) as head of household, with wife Leticia (Matthews) (age 48) and six children, ages ranging from 11-23 years old. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXDC-8FV

YEAR 1930: Claude Poole (age 61) is widowed and lives with his youngest born son, Kirby Poole (age 21). https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/3VRJ-N2M

YEAR 1940: Claude Poole (age 71) lives with his son, Kirby Poole (age 30). The census shows us that Claude works on the farm 40 hours per week and Kirby works as a “Laborer”, 48 hours a week. The home and land is still owned by the Poole family and the value is shown at $1200. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-27777-1813-0?cc=2000219&wc=MMYC-W4Y%3A2015660165

Claude Poole died in May, 1940, at age 71. Claude’s wife and the mother of his children is Leticia (Lutitia Matthews) Poole, who died years earlier in 1921, at age 50.

YEAR 1942: Kirby Poole (age 32), enlists into the military at Ft. McClellan, Alabama as a WWII soldier. He is single, without dependents, has a grammar school education, with civilian skills described as: Semiskilled chauffeurs and drivers, bus, taxi, truck, and tractor. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K8TT-6GV

YEAR 1989: Kirby Poole later married Jewell (Dean) Poole. It is unknown when or where they married, or if they had children. The couple remained married until Kirby’s death, at age 80, in 1989 and Jewell died in 2003, at age 86, both were buried in Alabama. During WWII, Kirby may have had a chance to leave Alabama and see a bit of the world, unlike other family members. It is unknown whether he relocated and lived in other locations over the span of forty years, or whether he returned to his familiar surroundings to live and die in Alabama. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JL7K-64Z

Most of the Caucasian Poole family descendants are buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Montgomery, Alabama.

James William Thomas Poole With his second wife Sarah Ann “Sally” (Lassiter) Poole

James WT Poole was the Caucasian plantation owner who fathered our patriarch, John Poole in 1844, born to a slave woman named Jennie. We believe James WT Poole has family origins in England. He was born to parents, James Thomas Poole, SC (abt. 1788 -1837) Elizabeth Barnes, NC (abt. 1797 - ?), who married in 1809.

Ancestry records refer to him as: James WT Poole (or) Jas WT Pool (or) James WT Pool. He was born in 1811, South Carolina and died in 1880, Montgomery, AL, at age 69. He was married two times; 1) 1839 in Montgomery, AL to Mary (Margaret) Carpenter (1801 – 1844); 2) 1869 in Montgomery, AL to Sarah Ann “Sally” Lassiter.

No children with Mary (Margaret) Carpenter

He fathered five (5) children with Sarah Ann “Sally” Lassiter: James Poole, Thomas Poole, Claude Poole, Drucilla Poole and Elizabeth Poole

It is unknown how many children were fathered with other women or his female slaves. “Slave Schedules” simply list people as property and do not show the names, merely GENDER, AGE and CALCULATED BIRTH YEAR.

We located our own patriarch, John Poole on an 1850 Slave Schedule, as follows: "United States Census (Slave Schedule), 1850," Jas W T Pool, Montgomery County, Montgomery, Alabama Owner's Name: Jas W T Pool Residence: Montgomery county, Montgomery, Alabama Gender: Male Race: Black Age: 7 years Calculated Birth Year: 1843 Film Number: 442873 Digital Folder Number: 4191547 Image Number: 00357 Line Number: 9 County: Montgomery State: Alabama

POOLE FAMILY VINTAGE RECIPES

"There is no technique; there is just the way to do it. Now, are we going to measure or are we going to cook?”

Family recipes make the best meals. Recipes that are handed down to us and we in turn will hand them down to the next generation. They are re-used every Thanksgiving, baked for birthday celebrations and brought to every family picnic. Why? Because not only are they delicious, they also hold happy memories. Who is the keeper of the apple pie recipe? Which family member knows how to make that potato salad?
