Appendix 2: Description of tests OBS=Alive/Dead EXP=Mortprob Observed/Expected Test: Appendix 3: Definitions of emergency and elective status Below are the relevant portions of definitions of the ``Emergency'' and ``Elective'' variables taken as examples from the User Guide for the 2012 ACS-NSQIP Participant Use Data File.[12] For the variable Emergency, the emergency case variable distinguishes between urgent/semielective/elective cases and true emergent surgeries. Urgent/semi-elective cases are not considered emergencies. Assign 'YES' if the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist report the case as emergent. For the variable Elective, ``YES'' is entered if the patient is brought to the hospital or facility for a scheduled (elective) surgery from their home or normal living situation on the day that the procedure is performed. ENTER NO (Exclude) FOR the following: patients who are inpatient at an acute care hospital (example: patient transferred from another acute care hospital to your hospital for surgery) patients who are transferred from an ED patients who are transferred from a clinic patients who undergo an emergent/urgent surgical case patients admitted to the hospital on the day(s) prior to a scheduled procedure for any reason (e.g. cardiac or pulmonary workup or ``tuning'', bowel cleanout, TPN, hydration, anticoagulation reversal etc.) ENTER YES (Include) FOR the following: patients staying with friends or family, or in a local hotel, because of logistics (example: patient lives 50 miles from the hospital and stays in a hotel across from the hospital the night before their scheduled (elective) surgery) patients who come from their present ``home'' (which may include patients whose home is a nursing home, assisted care facility, prison or other nonhospital institution) .
