In acceding to this request. His Excellency expressed the hope that it might not be long before a EOYAL CANADIAN ACADEMY DF ARTS might be instituted, to be composed of and managed by Canadian Artists On May 26th, the new building of the Arts Association of Montreal was opened by His Excellency and Her Royal Highness, and on this occasion the Governor-General again alluded to the prospect of forming a Royal , Canadian Academy. > 0' The following report of the proceedings is extracted from the Montreal Gazette : Q. About 9 o'clock His Excellency the Governor-General and Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise arrived, attended by Major and Mrs. De Winton, and were escorted by the President of the Association to the dais. The Hon. Mr. Justice Mackay, President, then read the tollowing address : -J ^} 241744 iTo His Excellency the Right Honorable Sir John Doiiglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquis of Lome, one of Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Council, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, and Knight Grand Cross of the most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, Governor-General of Canada, and Vice-Admiral of the same, (&c., «&c., t&c, and to Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise : On behalf of the Art Association of Montreal, we desire to thank Your ^xcellercy and Your Royal Highness for the honor and advantage conferred upon our Association by the patronage to which you have graciously consented, and also for the favor of Your Excellency's and Your Royal Highness' presence this evening, on the occasion of the opening of our Gallery. We not only believe that the love of the beautiful in nature and art is a source of some of the purest pleasures of life, but that it stimulates and supports our highest aspirations, and we think that the influence of the Fine Arts is especially important in refining and ennobling those practical aims which necessarily tend to absorb the energies of a people actively engaged in develop- ing the material resources. of our young and rapidly growing country. We therefore acknowledge with gratitute the interest which Your Excellency and Your Royal Highness have taken in our efforts, and we feel that the promotion of art could receive no higher or more efficient countenance than in the patronage extended by those who represent here the Crown of England, and in their persons unite illustrious lineage and station with a love of intellectual and aesthetic culture. In Your Royal Highness we recognize a worthy successor of your noble father, the great and good Prince Albert, encourager, in his lifetime, of all that might tend to improve the public taste and advance the interests of the Fine Arts, and whose ideas and work have so largely contributed to the notable revival of art which this age witnesses. Although the want of a permanent Gallery had long been felt, probably no step would have been taken, for some time to come, to erect such a building in Montreal, had it not been for the late Mr. Benaiah Gibb's munihcent bequest, and the prompt action which he imposed upon us. In addition to his very valuable collection of paintings and several bronzes, he gave and bequeathed to the Association, in trust for the citizens of Montreal, the ground upon which our building stands, and eight thousand dollars in money. Ours is believed to be the first building erected in the Dominion wholly for Fine Art purijoses.

Foy was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1982; Saleik in Velbert, Germany, in 1983. They graduated with distinction from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2006, making their first appearance as DaveandJenn in the graduating exhibition. Experimenting with form and materials is an important aspect of their work, which includes painting, sculpture, installation, animation and digital video. Over the years they have developed a method of painting dense, rich worlds in between multiple layers of resin, slowly building up their final image in a manner that is reminiscent of celluloid animation, collage and Victorian shadow boxes. DaveandJenn are two times RBC Canadian Painting Competition finalists (2006, 2009), awarded the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s Biennial Emerging Artist Award (2010) and longlisted for the Sobey Art Award (2011). DaveandJenn’s work was included in the acclaimed “Oh Canada” exhibition curated by Denise Markonish at MASS MoCA – the largest survey of contemporary Canadian art ever produced outside of Canada. Their work can be found in both private and public collections throughout North America, including the Royal Bank of Canada, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Calgary Municipal Collection and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

Graeme Chalmers Department of Curriculum Studies Faculty of Education University of British Columbia Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, V6T 1Z4 Abstract / Resume The ways in which we, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people alike, view the Aboriginal art of the Northwest Coast, have been profoundly affected by European accounts of the art. For a long time Northwest Coast art was compared to European art and treated as a quaint variant of “real” art. In recent decades we have begun to view this work as art by itself, that is art which is inherently valuable.     Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol. 11, Nos. 1-2 “We Can Draw!”: Toronto Improvisation, Abstract Expressionism, and the Artists’ Jazz Band David Neil Lee The improvised performance practice that came to be known as “free jazz” burst into prominence around 1960, and soon proved itself a genre extremely permeable to influences from other artistic disciplines. It was, as John Szwed writes, “. played by musicians who often seemed to have completely escaped the jazz recruitment process. They were classically trained virtuosos and musical illiterates, intellectuals and street rebels, and highbrows disguised as primitives” (Szwed 236). Ted Gioia calls the first free jazz musicians “. almost all outsiders . an outgrowth of the bohemians and ‘angry young men’ of the 1950s” (Gioia 311). To make the members of this new movement even harder to pigeonhole, George E. Lewis points out that the new music’s emergence “was a multiregional, multigenre, multiracial, and international affair” (Lewis 40). I am currently based in Santa Fe, NM but I have exhibited throughout North America as well as in Europe. Besides my academic work as a professor of fine art, I have written from time to time on various aspects of the contemporary world of the arts and have served on many national and regional arts juries and as an expert panelist on a variety of cultural issues. My artwork has explored several themes through a variety of media including printmaking (etching, lithography, relief techniques), painting, photography as well as multi-media. I have explored many issues connected to the landscape as well as with the human figure. My largest current project is Green Night, a series of paintings based on visions of the world as seen through night vision technology. My most recent exhibition, held in August 2015 was the show Inland Sea, a selection of photographs of Lake Winnipeg dealing with different aspects of its huge watershed; the natural processes connected with such a huge body of water, its role in the lives of the people in the region and the politics of how its water resources are used.     Landon Mackenzie is a Canadian artist who has built an impressive body of work. Perhaps best known for Lost River Series, and her complex mapping paintings, Mackenzie’s pictures are widely exhibited in Canada and internationally and collected by museums including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, among others. Raised in Toronto, She hold a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax (1972-1976) and an MFA from Concordia University in Montréal (1979). She has received numerous awards including the Golden and Diamond Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medals, and the (2017) Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Her work has been extensively written about. Based in Vancouver, Mackenzie is professor at Emily Carr University.
