DESTINATIONS VISITED DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAY Zadar is a city in northern Dalmatia region and the center of Zadar County. It has about 75.000 inhabitants. Due to its position in the center of the Adriatic, it is well connected with the rest of Croatia and easily accessible by land, air and sea. Zadar is a city of 3,000 years long and interesting history. The inner city center is located on a peninsula that has been the target of numerous invaders and destroyed several times over the centuries. The turbulent past has left many significant monuments that still adorn the city today. One of the most recognizable symbols of the city is the church of St. Donatus from the 9th century that captivates visitors with its monumental size and specific circular shape. Remains of the largest Roman Forum ever built in Croatia testify the Roman urbanization of the city, which began in the 1st century BC. Zadar's cathedral is dedicated to St. Anastasia and it is the largest cathedral in entire Dalmatia region. The modern installations Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are situated on the promenade by the sea. They are unique in entire world and have become a symbol of the city. Krka waterfalls National Park covers the area along the river Krka and was declared a national park in 1985. Krka River is a natural and karst phenomenon with its 7 travertine waterfalls. The most famous is Skradinski buk waterfall. Besides waterfalls, there is a small island of Visovac in the national park, located in the middle of the lake, and since 1445 there is a Franciscan monastery on the island. Within national park is ethnographic exhibition with ancient watermills. Dugi otok (literal translation: Long island) is one of the numerous islands in the Zadar archipelago and the 7th largest island in the Adriatic. On the southeastern part of the island is Telašćica Nature Park, which includes the Mir bay, a favorite anchorage among the sailors. The natural salt lake Mir is well known for its healing mud. On the opposite side of the bay are 166 meters high cliffs that make the largest cliff range in the Adriatic. On the island you can find numerous picturesque fishing villages with stone houses and secluded beaches with turquoise, clear waters that represent a paradise for all who seek peace oasis. Sakarun is one of the most beautiful sandy coves in Croatia, and is located in the northwestern part of the island. On the island of Dugi otok is one of the most attractive underwater caves Golubinka that fascinates visitors with its magnificent underground beach. Velebit mountain Nature park is the largest protected area in Croatia with rich natural heritage and incredibly 79 endemic plant species growing on rocks and mountain pastures. Due to its biodiversity, the Velebit Nature Park is included in the UNESCO network of international biosphere reserves. Velebit mountain is unique and due to the architectural skills of the local population, which had to adapt to the rough karst landscape of the mountain, so the special achievement is the historic Master Road (cro: Majstorska cesta), which was built in the 19th century. Tul's rafters is the name of the most attractive mountain peak, where numerous scenes were filmed for films about Winneto, the Indian chief and the main character of Karl May's novels. Zrmanja Canyon was created thousands of years ago when Zrmanja river made its way to the sea through the karst under Velebit mountain. Zrmanja river is 69 km long and can be divided into two parts. First part covers the area from the source to the last waterfall - Janković buk, while the second part covers the area from the last waterfall to the point where the river flows into the Novigrad Sea. Obrovac is located about 4 kilometers downstream of Jankovic Buk, and 11 kilometers upstream of the mouth of the Novigrad Sea. The river is characterized by a clean, emerald green color and is the habitat of gray herons, ducks, cave pigeons, falcon and others. .
