Forth Seabird Group Forth Islands Bird Report 2010 Compiled by Bill Bruce April 2011 SEABIRD SPECIES SUMMARIES 2010 Note: AOS = Apparently occupied sites; AON = Apparently occupied nests; AOB = Apparently occupied burrows; AOT = Apparently occupied territories FULMAR GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL Overall, total numbers are very similar to last year On Fidra, Carr Craig and Inchmickery numbers (up 18 birds, 1%) are the same as last year while all other islands show a decrease. Overall numbers are down by 12 CORMORANT AON (17%) On Craigleith and Inchkeith breeding numbers LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL & are exactly the same as last year. For the second HERRING GULL year none were breeding on Haystack while on Carr Craig and Lamb numbers are down. Overall These gulls were counted on Inchkeith, the first numbers are down by 21 AON or 8%. count since 2002. A detailed study was undertaken to evaluate various cover system and final landform designs for the B-zone waste rock pile at Rabbit Lake Mine in Can- ada. Several tasks were completed including physical and hydraulic characteriza- tion of the waste and potential cover materials and numerical modelling to exam- ine erosion and slope stability. Soil-atmosphere numeric simulations were conducted to predict net infiltration and oxygen ingress rates through several cover system alternatives. A seepage numerical modelling programme was com- pleted to predict current and future seepage rates from the base of the pile for al- ternate cover system designs. Several final landform alternatives were developed for the pile along with a preliminary design for a surface water management sys- tem. The potential impact of various physical, chemical, and biological processes on the sustainable performance of the final landform was also considered. This paper provides an overview of the investigations completed towards the develop- ment of a cover system and final landform design for the B-zone waste rock pile. Introduction Rabbit Lake Mine, owned and operated by Cameco Corporation, began operation in 1975, and is the longest operating uranium production facility in Saskatchewan, Canada. The operation is located 700 km north of Saskatoon (Fig. 1). Historic and current operations at this site include four open pits, one underground mine, sev- eral mine waste storage facilities, and a mill. -

[email protected] Abstract : Mangrove-habitat expansion has occurred rapidly over the last 50 years in the 800 km 2 Firth-of-Thames estuary (New Zealand). Mangrove forest now extends 1-km seaward of the 1952 shoreline. The geomorphic development of this muddy coast was reconstructed using dated cores ( 210 Pb, 137 Cs, 7Be), historical- aerial photographs and field observations to explore the interaction between sediment processes and mangrove ecology. Catchment deforestation (1850s–1920s) delivered millions of m 3 of mud to the Firth, with the intertidal flats accreting at 20 mm yr -1 before mangrove colonization began (mid-1950s) and sedimentation rates increased to ≤ 100 mm yr -1. 210 Pb data show that the mangrove forest is a major long-term sink for mud. Seedling recruitment on the mudflat is controlled by wave-driven erosion. Mangrove-habitat expansion has occurred episodically and likely coincides with calm weather. The fate of this mangrove ecosystem will depend on vertical accretion at a rate equal to or exceeding sea level rise.
