Stu Bradbury

I grew up on a beef farm near Palmerston North, attended PNBHS and was planning to join the navy. Having passed all the tests and only needing to sign the form to enlist, I experienced what was New Zealand Business Week in my school holidays 19 years ago and never signed that dotted line. Instead; I went to Massey, did a mechatronics degree and started a business, then started another business, exited those, bought a farm, started another business, sold that and started another business and I currently work at Sprout Accelerator mentoring CEOs that are starting up agritech businesses.

I plan to take the room on a serial entrepreneur’s journey and then open up discussion around other often overlooked or hidden facets of starting a business like customer validation, value-based pricing, what does “start-up world” look like, pitching, vision and why it is important, customer experience design, or wherever the conversation takes us.

Following Catriona’s injury, a collection of friends and colleagues gathered together with the initial plan to raise funds for her. However, the bigger picture quickly became clear. Since that life-changing moment, Catriona has completed the New York Marathon, cycled 1000km from Lhasa in Tibet to in Nepal which including a world first to Everest Base Camp on a handcycle, was a finalist in the 2014 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year, inducted into the NZ Horse of the Year Show Hall of Fame and recognised in the 2014 Queens Birthday Honours list with a New Zealand Order of Merit. 2016 brought about a special win in the New Zealand Women of Influence Awards in the Community and Not-for- Profit division.

Catriona’s primary focus is staying fit and ready for a scientific breakthrough in spinal cord injury research. She does this by continually challenging herself (and her friends) with physical adventure as well as supporting CatWalk with innovative and fun fundraising initiatives.

Catriona is married to Sam and they have a son called Ted who is a chocolate labradoodle that Catriona has trained to assist her. Together they run Little Avondale, the oldest family owned thoroughbred stud in New Zealand. www.littleavondale.co.nz

THE BRAVE THINKERS // 2019 PROGRAMME 33 DRAGONS DEN FINAL JUDGES

Susanne Hardy

I currently work at Toyota NZ in our Information Services Department, heading up Programme Planning, having recently moved from Marketing which was my passion for the past 8 years.

I’ve been lucky enough to work in several areas of the Toyota business over the last two decades, and am currently undertaking an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) with Massey University to develop my wider knowledge across multiple disciplines.

I have strong values I’ve developed through personal and work situations; work ethic and doing the best job you can, being prepared but able to flex, resiliency & getting back up after a setback, being humble, smart and kind.

I love being creative, and enjoy the thrill of embarking on a new project and seeing something you become invested in come to life, from an idea to a reality.

To me it is about the why, not the status quo - know the why (or why not) first, then spend some time working out your business case, return on investment and what you are trying to achieve - all before the solution!

If you don’t know the problem you are trying to solve …it’s all the harder to see what the opportunities are.
