old st. patrick’s church oldstpats oldstpatschicago FR. ED FOLEY AWARDED GRANT just a thought The John Templeton Foundation has awarded a $220,000 grant to CTU to explore the ways science and the contemporary search for religious meaning can interface. The 31-month project entitled, “Preaching with the Sciences: An imaginative Approach to Roman Catholic Homiletics,” will be directed by emeritus faculty member Rev. Edward Foley, Capuchin, who is known for his compelling preaching.

During Foley’s 36 years of teaching at the Catholic Theological Union, he has served the school as Duns Scotus Professor of Spirituality, Professor of Liturgy and Music, Founding Director of the Ecumenical Doctor of Ministry Program, and coordinator of the school’s liturgy and musical celebrations. Foley will bring his wealth of experience to this innovative project which he conceived and designed. Project updates will regularly be posted on his website: edwardfoleycapuchin.org.

A primary way Roman Catholics explore their faith and nourish their spirituality is through preaching. However, few preachers explicitly connect faith or spirituality with science. This grant will gather leading scientists and homileticians to explore the positive contributions science can make to preaching, and consequently contribute to more contemporary modes of believing.

The project’s ultimate outcome will be a compilation of 100+ homily outlines for preaching key Sundays and feast days across the three-year lectionary cycle. More on Fr. Ed Foley by Fr. Richard Fragomeni

One can surely be impressed and overwhelmed with Ed Foley‘s website: edwardfoleycapuchin.org. It is an online catalog of the contributions and impact of one who may honestly be called a Franciscan scholar and preacher in the lineage of Saint Bonaventure and blessed John Duns Scotus.

The scope and volume of his scholarship, writing, and preaching need not be completely rehearsed here in this tribute. Enough to say that he has “authored or edited 28 books, produced 57 book chapters, 44 peer reviewed articles, and almost 200 enyclopedia, dictionary and pastoral articles translated into nine languages,“ contributing to the academy in the world of liturgy, science, preaching, and practical theology.

One can also be impressed with the fact that during his 36 years of teaching at CTU, he has served the school and the students as the Duns Scotus Professor of Spirituality, Professor of Liturgy and Music, Founding Director of the Ecumenical Doctor of Ministry Program, and Coordinator of the schools liturgy and musical celebrations.

ED IS TRUE TO HIS COMMITMENT TO THE INTERPLAY OF THEORY AND PRACTICE

In all this scholarly work, Ed is true to his commitment to the interplay of theory and practice. His presiding and preaching at Old St. Patrick’s Church and St. Mary’s Church in Riverside demonstrate the excellence of his artistry of making practical theology come alive. One can be impressed with all this work, without a doubt. However, what I am most impressed by is Ed Foley as a colleague and a person.

Ed was always an articulate voice for the root issues at stake in our institutional deliberations. He shared this gift of intelligent wisdom like a prophet. With such a shared gift, moreover, we experienced his shadow and his shine. Nevertheless, there can be no doubt that his heart was always turned towards the fruitfulness of the mission and Ministry of Catholic Theological Union. Thank you, Ed. Well done, good and faithful Capuchin. Arrivederci. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE November 1, 2020 | 1 pm | Join us: livestream.com/oldstpats/massofremembrance

LBFE food drive BROTHERS - FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY First-Ever Virtual and/or Live Food Drive in 2020 for Low- Income Seniors | Sunday, October 25, 2020

Old St. Pat's has a long, rich, and rewarding history with Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly. Every year in the Spring and again in the Fall we replenish their food pantry with suitable items for seniors who just don't have enough food to make it through until the end of each month. With these unprecedented times in history, Little Brothers is now sending food twice a month as the need has expanded for these vulnerable folks.

We missed seeing your smiling faces so we brainstormed a way to HYBRID this event by hosting volunteers (LIVE) in front of the Church before and after the 8 am, 10 am and 5 pm Masses on October 25. Or you can go online (VIRTUAL) beginning now if you prefer. Thanks for your ongoing support of our very vulnerable seniors.

Highlights: • With this new process, we will provide a list of items available on Amazon.com for purchase. • Volunteers will then deliver the food safely following established social distance guidelines.

Our prayers have been answered and YES, we will be there in front of Church on October 25 with the Little Brothers Truck! Stop by and drop off in a very sanitary and socially distanced way. Hope to see y'all soon. – Beth, John & Joe

We are highlighting many of your favorite crafters and vendors typically featured at our annual Solidarity Market. The virtual Solidarity Market page will be available late October through November on the OSP website.

We hope that you will take the time to support the vendors by visiting their websites and shopping online!

Virtual Market NOW LIVE: OLDSTPATS.ORG/SOLIDARITYMARKET CHICAGO FAIR TRADE'S 7TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY POP UP SHOP

You can also expect to see the vendors at Chicago Fair Trade’s Fair Trade Holiday Pop Up Shop. You can order from the vendors you know from past years.

You can order from multiple vendors at the Pop Up Shop (2717 N. Clark), pay in advance, and pick up your order curbside. Or you can visit the Shop online and do some serious browsing at chicagofairtrade.org. The online shop goes live on November 1. When ordering on the CFT website, you will have an opportunity to put in your affiliation – be sure to mention OSP! CFT PopUp shop hours: Closed Mondays December 4 - 23 November 1- December 3 Tuesdays - Saturdays 11 am - 7 pm 11 am - 6 pm Sundays 11 am - 6 pm IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES: A FAITH JOURNEY Scripture connections for October 25, 2020

“Thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.'” – Exodus 22:20-21

“...one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” – Matthew 22:35-39

Too often in our world, throughout history to the present moment, humankind becomes entangled in the letter of the law. Those “letters,” that wording, become ways for us to rationalize withholding human rights from groups of people, especially immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees: aliens in a foreign land. But God’s law is clear. Jesus’ message is clear. They are our neighbors, and God surely hears their cries. May we truly adopt hearts of love, so that our laws might build the Kingdom of God on earth.
