As part of the “Meteors Brighten Lives 2010” food drive, students at the Institute Campus for Young Men and Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women gathered 2,238 items of food that were donated to the St. James Food Pantry.

Longtime faculty member Br. Kevin Fitzgerald, FSC, was honored at a reception in the Boyle Courtyard at the Institute Campus for Young Men in celebration of his 50 years as a Christian Brother.

The young women and men of the Class of 2011 earned $2.7 million in scholarships and financial assistance from the colleges and universities of their choice with a four-year earning potential of $10.9 million.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, 49 students were inducted into the Br. J. Richard Rush, FSC Chapter of the National Honor Society.

De La Salle mathematics teacher Mark Jackowiak ’88 received the 2011 Brother George Wagner Master Teacher Award by the Mathematics Teachers Association of Chicago for his excellence in the classroom.

Khrystina Kulbida, valedictorian of the Class of 2011 at the Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women, was chosen as a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The De La Salle chess, girls basketball, girls bowling, girls softball, girls soccer and the boys volleyball teams were all recipients of the Illinois High School Association Team Academic Awards for excellence in the classroom.

Metra opened its “Lou” Jones Station at 35th and Federal, just two blocks from De La Salle’s Institute Campus for Young Men, improving De La Salle’s accessibility for students in the south and southwest suburbs, as well as the Chicago area.

Members of De La Salle’s Class of 2011 are attending some of the most prestigious colleges and universities across the country ranging from Oxnard and Pomona Colleges in California to St. John’s University in New York City to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

More than 300 supporters and friends of De La Salle Institute attended the Fourth Annual Great Futures Gala honoring Michael Tadin ’69 raising $325,000 for students financial assistance. The 20th Annual D-Final Event hosted over 500 guests and honored the initial D-Final Event committee.

The financial challenge of assisting students and their families at De La Salle can be increasingly difficult as the need for student funding has surpassed scholarship dollars. Omar died in the line of duty on August 22, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq.

“De La Salle reinforces the same beliefs that we instilled in our children. With this in mind, we wanted to help De La Salle continue to strive in providing educational excellence to its students. When we first approached De La Salle with our intent to help the school, we were received with open arms. Currently, we hold an annual fundraiser to help fund the endowed scholarship and a yearly Mass in Omar’s name. De La Salle has been with us since the beginning, always with a helping heart.

Your Gifts in Action 13 Partnerships in Action - Solar Panels

De La Salle is known for its innovative and excellent educational experience coupled with advanced technology in the classroom. Now we are going a step further by integrating the use of renewable energy into the school’s curriculum. This summer, we installed a one kilowatt educational photovoltaic (PV) system.

Photovoltaic is a method of generating electricity by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors also known as solar panels. They are termed “solar” panels because the most powerful source of light available is the sun. Solar panels are one of two technologies used for converting solar energy to electricity. Students in De La Salle’s Environmental and Physical Science classes are now exploring the dynamics of solar energy.

The major impediment to solar energy is the cost. Though solar radiation is abundant and nonpolluting, the equipment required to gather and utilize it is expensive. Thanks to a grant garnered by De La Salle’s Dean of Applied Sciences, Kamaal Khazen, from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, students are able to gain hands-on experience in solar energy monitoring and data analysis. An 18-foot solar panel was installed on the south wall of the Institute Campus this past spring. The panel generates one kilowatt of power and gives students at both the Lourdes Hall Campus and the Institute Campus information through a computer monitor about solar-encrypted energy readings. De La Salle students are then able to compare their readings and results with other Chicago-area schools that have installed solar panels. Students then plot data and draw charts to analyze and compare data from other solar panel locations. Our students are gaining invaluable knowledge of alternative energy sources and data interpretation.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation helps non-profit groups and local government organizations purchase and install renewable energy technologies. The Foundation’s goal is to improve the environment, help grow the renewable energy sector in Illinois, create jobs and lower energy costs all through its support of renewable energy technologies. The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation is working with schools around the state to bring public awareness to clean energy and help educate and train Illinois’ next generation about the benefits and potential of renewable energy.

De La Salle is one of several schools in the area that is a partner in this groundbreaking experiment. Our students are learning real-life ways to use and measure the effectiveness of alternative energy. With the aid of more philanthropic support, De La Salle looks forward to installing more solar panels to provide power to both the Institute and Lourdes Hall Campuses.

Each year, De La Salle Institute hosts the traditional all-class year alumni reunion banquet. At this banquet, we commemorate all of the five-year anniversary reunion classes. Last year’s celebration, hosted at the Beverly Country Club on October 1, 2010, included the Jubilee Classes of 1960 and 1985. Other classes celebrating reunions were the classes of 1935, 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005. A very important part of the alumni banquet celebration is the 50th anniversary class gift. This giving represents the care for the past and future excellence of De La Salle Institute. Whether alumni attend the banquet or not, participation in the class gift is a way of saying “thank you” to De La Salle for a privileged education. For nearly twenty-five years, the Irish Fellowship Educational and Cultural Foundation has been an important partner in De La Salle’s efforts to provide I feel so many educational opportunities to its students. Since 2007, the Foundation has have helped me to receive provided scholarships to students of Irish descent, so that they can achieve a e a alle education an excellent and innovative education here at De La Salle. The generous D L S support of the Foundation has allowed many students to attend, graduate “and in return, I would and go on to college who otherwise might not have been able to attend De like to help others. Four De La Salle students are the recipients of the Irish Fellowship scholarship award this year. One of them, Kelly Crowley ’12, a senior at De La Salle’s Lourdes Hall Campus, shares with us about her experience at De La Salle, how the scholarship has been beneficial to her family, and how she plans to give back to help future Meteors. ” “When I came to De La Salle, there were four Crowley children attending at once,” Kelly said. “The Irish Fellowship scholarship helped my parents afford the tuition so that my two brothers, my sister and I could receive a Catholic education.”

Kelly decided to attend De La Salle because it was the high school of choice for her entire family. Her grandparents and parents attended De La Salle Institute and Lourdes High School. Her experience at De La Salle has been like an extended family. She enjoys being at school and around her friends.

“One of the biggest ways that De La Salle has had an impact on my life is through team sports and extracurricular activities,” Kelly said. “I have developed a lot of close relationships and it has helped me mature into a young woman.”

Kelly plays on the softball and basketball teams at De La Salle, in addition to serving as a peer minister and being a science club member.

Kelly understands the importance of giving back. To help future Meteors, she plans to give back by supporting the 2012 Senior Class Pledge.

“I feel so many have helped me to receive a De La Salle education and in return, I would like to help others.”

Through the commitment of the Irish Fellowship Educational and Cultural Foundation, De La Salle continues its mission of providing a quality Catholic education to its students. De La Salle plays a key role during a student’s formative years. Being a Meteor means being a part of a community rich with educational innovation, engaging activities and an impactful learning environment. De La Salle students are empowered with the skills and confidence they need to meet the challenges they will face in their lives. If it weren’t for financial assistance, For many students, however, attending De La Salle is made possible through scholarship support and financial assistance. Jourdain Gant ‘14 is one of those “ I wouldn’t be at students. Currently a sophomore enrolled in De La Salle’s Honors Program De La Salle experiencing and a member of the chess team, Jourdain is a recipient of the Christian the great opportunities Brothers Adopt-A-Student Program. that are offered. “I am very grateful for the scholarship support from the Christian Brothers. I have to work hard and I am determined to maintain the scholarship for the rest of my years at De La Salle. If it weren’t for financial assistance, I wouldn’t be here experiencing the great opportunities that are offered.” Jourdain excels in the classroom and chose to attend De La Salle because of its strong academic heritage. ” “When I came to ‘D’ as a shadow, I knew this was the high school for me.” Jourdain continues to share, “It is fun, educational and very challenging. I know this scholarship is helping my parents afford to send me to De La Salle. It also allows me to focus more on my school work without worrying about getting a part-time job to help pay my tuition.”

After graduating from De La Salle, Jourdain plans to attend college and study to become a biologist.

“Being a student at De La Salle has changed my life,” Jourdain said. “I feel like I have no limitations to what I can be or do because of the education I am receiving at De La Salle.”
