  • BALAJI VANI Volume 2, Issue 3 March, 2008
OM NAMO BHAGAVATE PANDURANGAYA BALAJI VANI Volume 2, Issue 3 March, 2008 long time. The poor man did as he said. One day he found Srinivasas wife Sri Lakshmi Saraswati Bai at home and told her his story. She was a kindhearted woman and thus able to see the right thing to do. She felt sorry that the poor man had come back so many times and had been given no help. She gave him her nose ring, which he then sold at a jewelry store, which happened to be owned by her husband. Recognizing that nose ring, Srinivasa locked it in his safe at work and went home to question his wife. Upon returning home he asked her where her nose ring was. She was terrified to answer and went to the puja room, prepared a cup of poison and prayed: O Vittala, you are God, I know you can do anything. I ask for your help. As she was about to drink the poison, she heard a sound in the cup and looked inside and was astonished to see her nose ring there. She ran out to show her husband who, upon seeing that nose ring and checking that the one he had locked in the safe was still there, knew the Lord had worked this miracle. He transformed instantly, sold his belongings the next day and spent the rest of his life praising the Lord in the thousands of songs he com- posed to God. We know him today as Purandara Das. Sri Shiva Alankaram N. Swamiji told this story to illustrate how God acts and will save his devotees according to their faith in Him.

  • Vyas Purnima : a Festival of Disciples for Disciples (Excerpts from Satsang of Pujya Sant Shri Asaramji Bapu) Every Festival Is an Occasion for Happiness
Vyas Purnima : A Festival of Disciples for Disciples (Excerpts from Satsang of Pujya Sant Shri Asaramji Bapu) Every festival is an occasion for happiness. Indian culture has further enriched its festivals with an exclusive touch of colour and fragrance of samskaras. Vyas Purnima is a pious festival overflowing with the pristine fragrance of such samskaras. Sages were Mantra-drashtas-seers of the Vedic intonations intuiting the Vedic truths. By virtue of their dedicated penance and meditation, different Sages discovered and mastered different mantras. Maharshi Vyas compiled all these mantras together. He simplified the esoteric content of these Vedic mantras and thus made them accessible to common people so that they may improve their lives with strength and prosperity. Thus Maharshi Vyas came to be known as Veda Vyas. To commemorate this grand service to the endeavour of knowledge, the Purnima of the month of Ashadha is celebrated as Vyas Purnima. Vyas Purnima or Guru Purnima, is a festival that reminds us of our primary duty of attaining Self-knowledge. It adorns our mind with divine virtues and inspires us over and over again to bathe in the holy Ganges of Sadguru?s enlightening knowledge and divine love. Not only the devotees, Rishis, Maharshis, yogis and Self-realized Saints, but gods and demigods viz. Yakshas, Gandharvas, etc., who are desirous of liberation, also zealously look forward to this supremely propitious festival. Maharshi Veda Vyas had compiled and subdivided the Vedas into four parts. To acknowledge this great and noble deed, the gods had worshipped him on this auspicious day. From that day onwards, it has been a tradition to worship Maharshi Veda Vyas on the occasion of Vyas Purnima.
