Borough President Howard Golden

Howard Golden was sworn in as the 16th President of the Borough of Brooklyn on January 3, 1977. He was elected by the people of Brooklyn to a full four-year term on November 8, 1977. As Borough President, Mr. Golden has made economic development and neighborhood preser- vation his top priorities. During his tenure, Brooklyn's industrial and commercial sectors have undergone significant revitalization, and the renaissance of its neighborhoods and housing has ex- panded into every area of the Borough. Throughout his career, Mr. Golden has been an outspoken critic of all public policies which deny Brooklyn its rightful share of funding, services and development opportunities. Mr. Golden has also been a forceful advocate of tourism and cultural activities in the Borough. Through his initiative, the highly-acclaimed "Meet Me In Brooklyn" Travel Guide was produced

, and distributed worldwide. His sponsorship of the "Celebrate Brooklyn" performing arts series and other cultural events has brought the Borough new recognition as a source of stimulating and diverse entertainment for both audiences and performers. Mr. Golden has long championed the cause of Brooklyn's older citizens, and has worked closely with local and Borough-wide groups to provide funding for programs for the elderly. This spring, he will sponsor a conference on the problems of the elderly prior to the White House Conference on the Aging. The Borough President has also been a staunch supporter of the role of Brooklyn's Community Boards in the governmental process, and has sponsored an annual Community Board Conference for the past three years. Under his leadership, the Borough Hall Restoration Foundation was form- ed and work has already begun to restore the federal landmark building to its original grandeur, In 1980, Mr. Golden became the first Borough President in the City's history to be made an honorary Fire Chief by the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, and has also received awards from the Uniformed Firefighters Association and the Fire Marshals Benevolent Association for his efforts to strengthen the City's firefighting and arson prevention forces. Mr. Golden received the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association's highest award in 1979 for his role in successfully averting a police strike. Before becoming Borough President, Mr. Golden served with distinction in the Council for seven years. His report, as Chairman of the Health and Education Committee, on "Violence in the Schools" was directly responsible for the assignment of security guards and the public listing of all electrical and fire code violations in the City's public schools. Mr. Golden is the founder and Chairman of Save Amateur Sports, a City-wide organization of business, civic and sports leaders formed to support amateur athletic programs both in the public schools and in the community. In addition to serving as the 1980 General Chairman for the Brooklyn and Staten Island Israel Bonds Campaign, Mr. Golden is Vice Chairman of the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry. He is co-founder of HELP, INC., a committee formed to assist victims of the Italian earthquake, and is a member of many other civic, philanthropic and religious organizations.
