Played with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954, 1955 and the Kansas City Athletics in 1956. During Tommy’s tenure as a manager he won two World Series (1981 & 88), was twice National League Manager of the Year (1983 and 88), won the Branch Rickey Award in 2006, won a total of 1,599 games and had his #2 retired by the Los Angeles Dodgers . Tommy was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. GUEST SPEAKER – Bill Buckner Played professionally with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and Kansas City Royals. His playing career lasted over twenty years and during that time he had a batting average of .289, had 2,715 hits, accumulated 1,208 Runs Batted In. Bill was voted in as an All Star in 1981 and led the National League with a batting average of .324 in 1980 while with the Chicago Cubs. SPECIAL GUEST – Warren Brusstar Warren broke into Major League Baseball in 1977 with the Philadelphia Phillies winning seven games posting an ERA of 2.65. Warren later played for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs. Warren had a ten year career in Major League Baseball posting a lifetime ERA of 3.51.     LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 3, Apr. 17, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: With the 2008-09 hoops season now in the record books, the collegiate spotlight is focusing more closely on the nation’s baseball diamonds. Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.

    Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

Each Saturday we will highlight a favorite charity. For each of these appeals, I tried to pick some artworks which related in theme or medium to the cause. I want the purchase of the work to be both an act of love and also something that will remind you of the charity when you enjoy it. I also wanted the purchase to be part of a collaboration between the art, the gallery, and the charity…. so, I lowered all the prices for the duration of this appeal. My hope is that selling them at this level benefits the charity as much as possible and also leaves the buyer feeling like they got something they love at a fair price. Our first charity is Nat King Cole Generation Hope. 1 Aaron Payne Fine Art October 3, 2020 ART, JAZZ, BASEBALL & THE KING Nat King Cole became the first African American entertainer to host a television variety show, in 1956. As such, he was the first Black man many White families “invited” into their living rooms. He was, in many ways, the Jackie Robinson of television and music. A virtuoso jazz pianist, he is now best remembered for his soft baritone voice, which he used to great effect in both big band and jazz genres. His popularity as a musical artist has never waned in the nearly sixty years since his death in 1964.

    Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.
