Garage March 14, 2019 GAGOSIAN Harmony Korine Is Totally Mainstream And Totally Subversive The artist and director talks about his new film 'The Beach Bum' and exhibition 'Young Twitchy.' Scott Indrisek Matthew McConaughey in Harmony Korine's 'The Beach Bum.' Courtesy of Cinetic Media. Harmony Korine is undeniably an insider—his forthcoming film The Beach Bum stars Matthew McConaughey, and it opens in tandem with a painting show, “Young Twitchy,” at Gagosian in New York. But the director, writer, and artist seems most comfortable hiding out at his family’s home in Miami Beach, where he claims to spend much of time with Orthodox Jews at the local Chabad house. “They’ve never seen my movies,” he tells GARAGE. “That’s one of the reasons I like it.” Korine proclaims South Florida as one of his favorite places on earth, and his daily routine doesn’t seem that far off from the free-wheeling lifestyle of Moondog, Beach Bum’s drunk, stoned, horny antihero. “I ride the skateboard, go to the studio. Take my kids to school. Watch Rodney Dangerfield movies,” he says. “That’s pretty much it.” Later he sketches a picture of a perfect Floridian afternoon: “I have a little boat in Key Largo....I usually buy a couple bags of Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supremes, get a liter of Mountain Dew, and tweak out on the water—play electronic poker and mess around.” Matthew McConaughey and Harmony Korine on the set of 'The Beach Bum.' Courtesy of Cinetic Media. While he might imagine himself a Sunshine State slacker—”I don’t really have so much ambition,” he adds—that’s belied by how productive Korine actually is.

GQ March 11, 2019 GAGOSIAN Harmony Korine, Glorious Weirdo Harmony Korine—the creator behind Kids and Spring Breakers—returns to the Sunshine State for The Beach Bum, this time with Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, and Jimmy Buffett in tow. GQ’s Zach Baron spends time with the oddball auteur to discuss Korine’s new film, his wild past, truth, “Cosmic America,” and the Berenstain Bears. Zach Baron Photographs by Bruce Gilden When the filmmaker Harmony Korine was young, and interviewers would ask him about his past, he would tell stories. Some of these stories, in retrospect, were probably truer than others. In 1995, while promoting Kids, the controversial Larry Clark film for which Korine had written the screenplay as a 19-year-old living in his grandmother's apartment in Queens, Korine was invited onto the Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman, bemused at the tiny person in a giant suit who'd appeared in front of him, asked Korine how he had come to write Kids. “I just wanted to make a sequel to Caddyshack,” Korine told his host. “And I used to live by this guy and he was Hasidic Jewish and he always played with basketballs, and also his father was a dentist. But once, I was walking down the street and he said ‘You're a sinner!’ like that. So I just wrote it.” Later, Korine would be banned from the show, for pushing Meryl Streep backstage— or maybe it was for going through her purse. Like many things with Korine, the precise truth remains elusive.

Photo: Matthias Belz November , H. R. Giger and Mark Prent are both masters of navigating beauty, horror, science fiction, and fantasy. I’ve admired their works for a while; they both defy genre in a way that is difficult to articulate. They create and inhabit their own worlds, populating them with classic nods to both film and sculptural tradition. Giger’s and Prent’s works are dense and powerful, filled with shocking characters and strange magic. The time seems right to see these two great artists together in one room. —Harmony Korine Gagosian is pleased to present Birth Machine Baby, an exhibition curated by Harmony Korine, featuring works by H. R. Giger and Mark Prent. In this exhibition, Korine pairs eerie humanoid figures by Giger—whose name has been cemented in Hollywood history for his visual effects and design work on the Alien film franchise—with sculptures by Prent, a Canadian artist whose grotesque and provocative depictions of the human body were greatly admired by Giger himself. Despite the divergences in Giger’s and Prent’s chosen styles and mediums, both artists’ interests lie in coaxing out latent fantastical forms from the contours of the human body.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES Based on true events, WHITE BOY RICK is set in 1980s Detroit at the height of the crack epidemic and the war on drugs, in a city rife with corruption on every level. WHITE BOY RICK tells the moving story of a blue-collar father, Richard Wershe Sr. and his namesake teenage son, Rick Jr. In a mind-boggling series of events, Rick Jr. enters into a Faustian bargain, becoming an undercover informant and later a drug dealer, manipulated by the very system meant to protect him only to be abandoned by his police handlers and sentenced to life in prison. This incredible story of the youngest FBI informant in history is inextricably bound to a turbulent, complicated father-son relationship. Richard Sr., equal parts hustler, schemer and dreamer, is doing the best he can to stop the cycle of generational poverty and despair, driven by a sincere love of his kids. His son Rick Jr., caught up in his father’s aspirations, willingly becomes the means by which to achieve his father’s ambitions. But all the while, Richard Sr. also attempts to hold their tenuous and fractured family together – both father and son are ultimately motivated by the love of each other and their family. Their city and government betray them - the institutional injustice and corruption that defined Detroit, the home they loved, would be their undoing. WHITE BOY RICK is a tarnished American Dream, an improbable tale of fathers and sons, friends and family, a shifting landscape of loyalty and betrayal, where everything has a cost, including love and the ultimate price may be survival.

I n the year befo re he and his wife and daughter were forced to evacuate their new waterside home for Hurricane Irma, chances are you could find Harmony Korine in a light-filled lingerie shop-turned-art studio perched above some B-side boutiques in Miami’s Design District, puffing on a Cuban cigar and painting “douche boats.” “There’s so many douchebags here with boats,” explains Korine, who had just returned to Miami from his hometown of Nashville, where he and his family took refuge during the storm. He got inspired to make the watercolor-on-linen works after seeing Georgia O’Keeffe’s Southwestern landscapes in the medium at her namesake museum in Santa Fe two years ago. “Making artwork in Florida has such a different context to Nashville, so instead of shying away from it I kind of wanted to dive into it and do a whole series of these yachts, with funny pornographic titles like Malcolm XXX , Doggie Style Day Afternoon , Schindler’s Fist , The Bone Ranger or Ocean’s 11 ½ Inches .” Dubbed Adult Yachting , the new paintings will form the basis for his fourth solo show in as many years with Gagosian Gallery in 2018.
