3 Dear F-O-Fs (Friends-of-Fireworks),

This year marks the 41st year of the fireworks extravaganza at Innsbrook ... well, kind of. The show never had an official start date ... it had an evolution. It all began when we started building Innsbrook in 1971. As most of you know, all of our utilities are buried, and in the beginning we did all of the work ourselves, with the help of many, many cases of dynamite to get through the rock.

Since the world was more secure in those days, we had all this extra dynamite around and we began to use the stuff as fireworks on special occasions (we defined a “special occasion” as anytime we wanted to play with dynamite). As I recall, one Fourth of July we had bought a bunch of fireworks at the local stand and we went up to Lake Lucern Dam to set them off. As an afterthought, we took along a couple of sticks of dynamite for the finale. Our “crowd” of probably 25 aficionados thought the whole thing worthwhile and fun … and that began the gestation process of what is now our signature event of the year.

We haven’t used dynamite in the show in more than 20 years, and although I miss the extra “kick” of the cannon shots in the 1812 Overture, I don’t miss the blistering headaches we all got from handling the stuff. (The nitroglycerine in dynamite gets on your hands and skin then into the bloodstream where it dilates your blood vessels causing one awful headache.) We have gone from a do-it-yourself show to a full “blown” production with a budget not equaled for a private show in the state, and come to think of it, not equaled by any public show in this region also.

This show would not be possible without your support, as it is 100% financed by donations, advertisements and contributions of time, materials, and goods. This show is symbolic of the “can do” Innsbrook Community Spirit … of which we are all proud to be a part.

Enjoy the show!

Who started such a tradition? Who even came up with fireworks to begin with? Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years ago. The most prevalent legend has it that fireworks were discovered or invented by accident by a Chinese cook working in a field kitchen who happened to mix charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter (all commonly found in the kitchen in those days). The mixture burned and when compressed in an enclosure (a bamboo tube), the mixture exploded. A Chinese monk named Li Tian, who lived near the city of Liu Yang in Hunan Province, is credited with the invention of firecrackers about 1,000 years ago. The Chinese people celebrate the invention of the firecracker every April 18th by offering sacrifices to Li Tian. During the Song Dynasty, the local people established a temple to worship Li Tian. The firecrackers, both then and now, are thought to have the power to fend off evil spirits and ghosts that are frightened by the loud bangs of the firecrackers. Firecrackers are used for such purposes today at most events such as births, deaths and birthdays. Chinese burst. 13 HISTORY OF OUR COMMUNITY The history of Innsbrook is storied and exciting—a tale of dedication, love of nature and family, and growth and change across more than four decades. Innsbrook began as a dream for founder and Chairman Ed Boyce. A dream to bring the charm and serenity of Colorado’s A-frame cabins right here to the Midwest – a weekend getaway from the never-ending rat race of city living, without having to spend much time traveling. Joining Boyce in making the Innsbrook dream come true in the ‘70s were Warren Wobbe, Sr. and Les Buechele, who through their own blood, sweat and tears, alongside their families and trusted associates, designed and erected hundreds of A-frames, constructed lakes, built tennis courts and completed roads. The name “Innsbrook” is a nod to the scenic capital of Hot off our humble A-frame origins, we developed Austria’s Tyrol region, another place where beautiful permanent residences when there was demand for year- A-frames can be found clustered around small lakes. round or vacation homes. 25 THE ANNUAL INNSBROOK FIREWORKS SHOW

Welcome to the 2016 Innsbrook Fireworks Show. Every year we work to make the show more spectacular than the year before. As we go to press with this program booklet, we are approaching our goal of raising $120,000 in donations, ads, sponsorships and merchandise to make this show possible. This is an outstanding accomplishment in these times and is an unprecedented example of the community spirit of our property owners, advertisers and vendors at Innsbrook. We have said we could not do it without your help and you graciously came through to underwrite this event, our signature event of the year. Special thanks to the many volunteers without whose help this show would not be possible and additional thanks to J&M Displays, co-producers of this show. This is truly a community event. Please thank the property owners who donated, and remember the businesses listed in this program. Enjoy the show!

Listen to the announcements for updates from the Fireworks Field, check Facebook, or follow us on Twitter @InnsbrookResort for updates during the show on delays. Find the links at www.innsbrook-resort.com. Personal fireworks are NOT ALLOWED at Innsbrook. The National Fire Protection Association reports that far more fires are reported in the U.S. on a typical Independence Day than on any other day of the year, and fireworks account for more than half of those fires. Please enjoy the professional show at Innsbrook this year, but please, no personal fireworks.
