Introduction The term ‘God’s Acre’ probably dates from 1841 when Henry Wordsworth Longfellow published a poem entitled ‘God’s Acre’, which includes the following lines - “I like that ancient Saxon phrase which calls the burial ground God’s Acre.” When you think of a churchyard – what comes to mind ? It sometimes surprises people that places associated with death are so full of life. This is the case when it comes to our churchyards. For over 1,000 years the land around churches has been used for burials, and so it has come to be known as God's Acre. Because it has never been used for building or cultivation, and it has not been treated with chemicals or pesticides, this land teems with plants, bugs and all kinds of wildlife which might not be found anywhere else.     Robert DYON of Laceby, very near Grimsby, is mentioned in the Peace Sessions for 1381. (Records of Some Sessions of the Peace in Lincolnshire, quoted in Women in England, P.J.P. Goldberg 1995) There is a further reference in the 14th century Placita Antiqua to John Dyon’s manors at Laceby. In 1391 Richard DYON was called before the King’s Bench regarding misdemeanors around Grimbsy so the family was clearly well established in north Lincolnshire by the late 1300s, and probably earlier, either at the time of the Conquest or perhaps later at the time of the Hundred Years war. In 1575 John Dyon’s will includes William Curteis the Attorney and John Curteis of Welton, leaving them both an old Angel (coin depicting an angel) and “ Curteis wife of Louth, widow a ** and 3s 4d” There are other CURTEYS families very close by, (Note: Peacock says that it was the couple’s son Robert who was vicar of at Walmsgate and Castle Carlton and at Wispington near Horncastle, while William CURTEYS gent.
