Songs like Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, and Annies Song have entered the canon of universal anthems, but at his start John Denver was a young man with little more than a fine voice, a guitar, and a dream. Growing up in a conservative military family, he was not expected to drop out of college and head to Los Angeles, where the music scene was flourishing. Nor was he expected to succeed. In Take Me Home, John Denver chronicles the experiences that shaped his life, while unraveling the rich, inner journey of a shy Midwestern boy whose uneasy partnership with fame has been one of the defining forces of his first fifty years. With candor and wit, John writes about his childhood, the experience of hitting L.A. as the Sixties roared into full swing, his first breaks, his years with the Mitchell Trio, his first songwriting success with Leaving on a Jet Plane, and finally a career that made his a global household name. He also explores his relationships with the women in his life - particularly his first wife, Annie Martell, and his second wife, Cassandra Delaney - as well as his parents, his children, his partners through his life, and his friends. Honest, insightful and rich in anecdotes that only a natural-born storyteller could tell so well, Take Me Home is a highly charged and fascinating book from beginning to end. Its like spending a couple of days with a good friend. Art is subjective, and books involve the art of writing. There have been some one star reviews of this book, comments mainly articulating disappointment in John. What I personally loved about this book was Johns warts and all approach. I have not led a perfect life either, and it was both cathartic and insightful to read both Johns failings as well as his thoughts on those failings. And yes, he at times came across as a pretty self- centered individual; again, none of us are perfect and I didnt feel it took away from the overall writing. In addition, towards the end of the book John presents some essays on the environment which, although written a few years ago, are still timely.I grew up with John Denver and saw him in concert a couple times in the late 70s. His tragic death marked a passing of the age of innocence for me. Roads diverged, and its only now, in my 50s that Ive discovered his music again. But I realised I never really new much about the man. Having read his autobiography, I feel closer to the man whose music I loved. I felt like I had a long conversation with a long-lost friend. For anyone who felt a connection with John, this is a really good book. But be prepared. he was just a flawed, imperfect human being, like the rest of us. But one who had insight into his flaws and was not shy in presenting them to the world. Thanks John, for the music, your impact on environmental issues, and your words. Thanks to jddpro for sharing the show and the front cover at Dime. jddpro noted: The Windstar Foundation was an environmental education organization founded by John Denver and Thomas Crum in 1976 in Snowmass, Colorado. John Denver started giving concerts to the members of the foundation during the annual Windstar Symposium in the mid-’80s, and this is the earliest known recording of such concerts. There are also recordings of the Windstar symposium concerts from 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995. The Foundation closed its doors in October 2012, voted to dissolve, and sold its property for US$8.5 million in early 2013. The theme of this symposium was “The Heart of Relationship”, as suggested by Thomas Crum. I received this recording as June 12-14, 1987, but the concert was obviously recorded on one of the days. As John mentioned “a full moon out there” before singing the last song, the date of the concert should be in the middle of a lunar month. So it could only be June 12, which was the 17th day of the 5th month that year in the lunar calendar. The three bonus tracks, including two Hank Williams covers, are from a 1987 benefit concert for Windstar. + + + + + Lineage: Soundboard > Cassette Tapes > WAV > Goldwave > Track Splitting > WAV > Trader’s Little Helper > SBE Fix > FLAC Level 8 01.
