Songs like Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, and Annies Song have entered the canon of universal anthems, but at his start John Denver was a young man with little more than a fine voice, a guitar, and a dream. Growing up in a conservative military family, he was not expected to drop out of college and head to Los Angeles, where the music scene was flourishing. Nor was he expected to succeed. In Take Me Home, John Denver chronicles the experiences that shaped his life, while unraveling the rich, inner journey of a shy Midwestern boy whose uneasy partnership with fame has been one of the defining forces of his first fifty years. With candor and wit, John writes about his childhood, the experience of hitting L.A. as the Sixties roared into full swing, his first breaks, his years with the Mitchell Trio, his first songwriting success with Leaving on a Jet Plane, and finally a career that made his a global household name.

Not only did his environmentally and socially- conscious music resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, it helped strengthen his voice as a devoted humanitarian and activist. Denver remains to this day an iconic American figure who managed to bridge the gap between the pop, folk, and country music genres.

Alex Mitchell Professors Corrigan and Feinman-Todd Washington Confidential 10.18.16 Beyond the Country Roads On a frigid January morning, I stood inside the lackluster interior of a Capriotti’s sandwich shop that had recently opened at 1201 34th Street. The storefront was primarily comprised of faux-steel finishes and glaring television screens. The Hoya had sent me to this decidedly bland chain restaurant to write a review for its “Guide” section. I found the restaurant, along with its artery-clogging fare, largely forgettable. However, what I didn’t know at the time was that the building I was standing in was actually steeped in American cultural history. The structure’s significance would not be revealed to me until a walking tour almost two years later. This compact building at 1201 34th Street had once been “considered one of the top… clubs in the country” (Harrington). It had housed two famous performance venues during the mid-twentieth century. First as “The Shadows” in the early sixties, the venue had seen the early stand-up acts of comedians like Woody Allen and Bill Cosby (“Clinking Glasses and Swinging…”). Later, in 1963, when this “undistinguished gray building” transformed into “The Cellar Door,” it cemented its place in American music history (Harrington). It was at this club in December 1970 that the American Folk hit, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was performed for the very first time. What’s more, the song was written by a Georgetown graduate only a few blocks away from the storied nightclub. In this essay I plan to explore the unlikely story of a young Georgetown student who found himself written into the annals of American music history and the long-forgotten musical venue that made it all possible.

King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.

If you want to use the chords above and play along with John Denver’s official version, you’ll need a capo on the 2nd fret. Without a capo, you’d need to use chords in the key of A to play along with John Denver (which makes a bit tougher, since a barre chord is needed for F#m). Otherwise, you can use no capo (using the chords I show) and you’ll sound just fine on your own. Understanding the timing of each chord. We’ll have 4 counts per measure. Chords are either played for 1 or 2 measures, depending on the part of the song. Here’s a look at the chord progressions used for each section. Everytime you see a chord name, play that chord for 4 counts (1 measure). If you see a slash (“/”), repeat the prior chord for an additional measure. How to play the chords. Here’s how to play the chords you’ll need. For the F chord, you can get away with the “easy” approach of only playing the middle four strings - this prevents you from needing to play a full barre chord, which is more difficult.

  • [Morgantown] Dominion-Post's “Far Out: “Country Roads” Turns 50
Far out: “Country Roads” turns 50 by Jim Bissett, The Dominion Post April 11, 2021 Any ex-pat West Virginian who has ever punched up “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on the jukebox can tell you. The late John Denver’s far-out ode to moonshine, mountain mamas and winding, Whitman-like lanes can’t help but make a person on the other end of that exchange feel like he should have been home yesterday. Even if the summoner of the three minutes and eight seconds of sudden, unexpected longing couldn’t get out fast enough after graduation. Fifty years ago on this day – April 12, 1971 – West Virginia became a destination, on AM radio. That’s when the aforementioned song was released as a single from Denver’s “Poems, Prayers and Promises” album. Critics haven’t been entirely unkind to the Me Generation LP, heavy on singer- songwriter sensitivity. Thank the Mountain State standard most of West Virginia’s born-and-bred now simply refer to as, “Country Roads,” for that. “I knew I had something,” Bill Danoff told The Dominion Post previously. Wherever home is, take me there Danoff was a Washington, D.C., folk singer and wannabe rock ‘n’ roller by way of Springfield, Mass. He came to Georgetown University in the 1960s to study Chinese language and culture while dabbling in the capital city’s thriving local music scene. That’s how he and his then-wife, Taffy Nivert, also a songwriter, got to know Denver, who was doing frequent club dates there while trying to forge his name in music.
