ABSTRACT Breweries produce tons of organic solid waste and millions of liters of wastewater. When discharged into the environment without treatment, these waste streams degrade aquatic ecosystems and can pose risks to human health. Working with SHUKALB, our team investigated Albanian brewery practices and identified process improvements to reduce operating costs and breweries’ environmental impact. Our interviews with industry professionals, extensive on-site assessment, and surveys demonstrate that general Albanian brewery processes compare favorably to global breweries except for a higher environmental impact due to no available industrial wastewater treatment in Albania. As costs influence brewery changes, we generated high-level recommendations for breweries to improve their environment impact. i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CONTEXT The 2017 United Nations World Water Development Report Volumetrically, beer is the third most popular alcoholic estimates that the countries of the world discharge over beverage in Albania behind wine and raki, and beer 80% of their wastewater into the environment without consumption is increasing in Albania. The beer brewing treatment. The largest waste stream is wastewater. On The remaining treatment plants have the capacity to treat average, breweries use between three and ten liters of approximately 25% of the country’s wastewater (United water for every liter of beer they produce. We wanted to know what factors influence how Albanians purchase beer and if a brewery’s environmental Table E.2: Bar and Restaurant Survey List impact had any role in it. The team believed that Albanian breweries may be more likely to implement environmentally friendly practices if they could engage their consumers by advertising these initiatives. To determine this, the team employed a five-point Likert scale survey, shown in Figure E.2. We asked consumers how much they agreed or disagreed with different factors of purchasing beer (i.e. price, packaging, sustainability), where zero indicates strongly disagree, two indicates neutral, and four indicates strongly agree. SHUKALB distributed an online version of the survey to its general mailing list and the team distributed a paper version to customers at four bars in Tirana, listed in Table E.2. We chose bars through convenience sampling as we could only distribute surveys with the owner’s permission. Additionally, our team interviewed management from the establishments to gauge their attitudes towards serving more sustainably brewed beer. ALBANIA Ilda Londo porocilo.indb 51 20.5.2014 9:04:36 INTRODUCTION Policies on media development have ranged from over-regulation to complete liberali- sation. Media legislation has changed frequently, mainly in response to the developments and emergence of media actors on the ground, rather than as a result of a deliberate and carefully thought-out vision and strategy. Th e implementation of the legislation was ham- pered by political struggles, weak rule of law and interplays of various interests, but some- times the reason was the incompetence of the regulatory bodies themselves. Th e Albanian media market is small, but the media landscape is thriving, with high number of media outlets surviving. Th e media market suff ers from severe lack of trans- parency. It also seems that diversifi cation of sources of revenues is not satisfactory. Media are increasingly dependent on corporate advertising, on the funds arising from other busi- nesses of their owners, and to some extent, on state advertising. In this context, the price of survival is a loss of independence and direct or indirect infl uence on media content. Th e lack of transparency in media ratings, advertising practices, and business practices in gen- eral seems to facilitate even more the infl uences on media content exerted by other actors. In this context, the chances of achieving quality and public-oriented journalism are slim. Th e absence of a strong public broadcaster does not help either. Th is research report will seek to analyze the main aspects of the media system and the way they aff ect media integrity.

No part o f this book may be translated or reproduced in any form, by print, photoprint, microfilm, or any other means, without written permission from the publishers. Printed in Hungary PREFACE In a short introductory outline such as the present one it is impos sible to handle a complex and delicate subject in any exhaustive and balanced manner. The presentation will always be eclectic and must thus remain the responsibility of the author. In this survey, the selection of data and of scholarly opinions that are treated at some length is the result of personal experience with the field of study. In some way, it is the book the author wishes he could have had at his disposal when, eleven years ago, he began the study of the languages of the ancient Balkans. This is the spirit in which he would like it to be accepted. Another person’s presen tation would be different. It cannot be otherwise in a field in which the body of universally shared opinions and received doctrines is small and the approaches of those concerned with it vary considerably. More space has been given to the literary sour ces than one would expect in such a series; however, for this subject it was vital to provide the appropriate philological and: historical basis. The bibliography, too, is selective, and here again a personal note could not be avoided.
