Bill Sturt Editor Of Ale 5 6 Beer Days Out - Beers in Bridgnorth By Steve James ridgnorth is an historic market town in We arrived from Kidderminster on the B Shropshire on the River Severn and is a Severn Valley Railway and our first port of popular place for visitors from the West call was naturally the bar on the station, the Midlands and elsewhere. It is not only the Railwayman’s Arms (formerly the Station northern terminus of the Severn Valley Tavern, dating from 1862). Batham’s Best Railway, but also has the steepest inland Bitter is always kept well here, which we Victorian funicular railway in England, linking sampled, along with Bewdley Brewery Low Town and High Town. An early name for Station Porter, with six other real ales to the town may have been Bruges, hence the choose from. We then crossed over the bridge (replaced in 1994) to New Road, first link with beer (Belgium). Bridgnorth has th a long history of pubs and inns; once nearly walking up the hill, past the ruins of the 12 130 pubs and inns were licensed in the town century castle, to the Old Castle to have an and although this is now down to less than enjoyable meal, washed down with Hobson’s 30, several historic pubs survive. We Town Crier. recently decided to check what was on offer at the many pubs and hostelries in the town. A couple of doors further along West Castle Street is the White Lion, dating from the late 1640’s. It is now the tap-house of the Hop & Stagger Brewery, previously behind the pub, but now brewing at larger premises in the countryside. We sampled their Bridgnorth Porter, Golden Wander and Triple Hop IPA (very hoppy!) from the choice of seven real ales. Then across the road to the Shakespeare, first licensed in 1792 as the Punch Bowl. This historic pub was recently taken over and renovated by Joules (Market Drayton) and here we sampled Slumbering Monk and Pure Blonde ales. 7 8 Beer days out continued By Steve James of eight real ales. A couple of doors further along High Street, near the 13th century town gate, is the historic Golden Lion, dating back to 1790 and once with its own brewery. In 2017, this pub was bought and renovated by Holdens, and was CAMRA pub-of-the season in Spring 2018; here we sampled Holdens Mild, Golden Glow and Black Country Mild. Retracing our steps along High Street to the end of the market place, we called into the Merckz specialist Belgian bar, named after We continued into the market place, with its the famous Belgian cyclist, Eddy Merckz. It fine 17th century timbered town hall, where has nine taps offering a variety of Belgian market stalls are set up on Saturdays and at and German beers, and over 60 bottled other times. Turning left into Whitburn beers, served by Maria & Jed who are very Street, we visited the Kings Head, dating knowledgeable about Belgian beers and gins. back to 1780 and now owned by local We then turned left down the hill to butcher, Richard Beaman; we sampled Cartway. This steep narrow street was once Hobsons Twisted Spire and Wye Valley HPA. home to over 20 pubs and inns, some with Behind the pub is the Stable Bar, now a secret hatches and passageways, but now separate business and the tap-house for the only two survive. The Black Boy (previously Bridgnorth Brewery, set up in 2011 by The Blackie Boy) was first licensed in 1790 Craddocks (Stourbridge). We sampled River and the present pub dates from 1889. Steam, Monarch’s Way & King’s Escape, along with Three Tuns XXX Pale Ale. Back into the market place, we briefly visited the local Wetherspoons pub, the Jewel of the Severn, opened in 2002, to sample some Salopian Lemon Dream from their selection 9 10 Beer days out continued By Steve James We sampled Three Castles Black Boy Bitter, Greene King St Edmunds Golden Beer and one of my own favourites, Saltaire Triple Chocaholic. The other surviving pub at the bottom of Cartway, the Bassa Villa (previously Magpie/Beehive), has a small range of local beers on draught and in bottle. Unfortunately, because we had to catch the train back to Kidderminster, we hadn’t time to cross the river into Low Town. Here, recommended pubs include the Black Horse in Bridge Street, dating from 1810 (10 hand- pumps, including Wye Valley), and The Vine (1720) and Fosters Arms (1790) in Mill Street. Nor did we have time to pop into the CAMRA award-winning pub, The George, in Hollybush Road (six real ales), near the railway station. So Bridgnorth is an interesting place for historic pubs and a wide variety of excellent beers and is well worth a day out. 11 12 There’s Not Only Port in Portugal! By Steve James n the past, many beer enthusiasts have lager) and Bohemia (amber), along with I thought of Portugal as something of a beer bottles of craft beer, including Oitava Colina desert – the best you could get was a good Ze Arnaldo Porter (St Arnaldo is the patron glass of Super Bock or Sagres. But beer has a saint of beer!), Rosa Nunes Cruz Rapada dry long history in Portugal, going back to Roman stout, LX Black Rye IPA and Bolina Nina times and the nation is the 7th largest stout. Don’t forget to try the codfish cakes, a European exporter of the product. And now speciality of the restaurant. there seems to be a virtual explosion of micro-breweries and craft beer, with a wide We then found the Delirium Cafe in Calcada range of light and dark beers available in the Nova de Sao Francisco, with its range of main towns and cities.

  • Myanmar Carlsberg Co Ltd
Myanmar Carlsberg Co Ltd The case describes how Myanmar Carlsberg contributes to building capacity in Myanmar by implementing high international standards within safety, anti-corruption, education and environment. In February 2013, Carlsberg signed a contract to invest in a new brewery in Myanmar. Carlsberg is the first Danish company to set up in Myanmar, and the first beer producer in the world with permission to brew beer in the promising Burmese market. The impressive new brewery is located in a new industrial zone in Bago, which is a couple of hours drive from Yangon. Only the very last licenses are needed before Myanmar Carlsberg can start brewing beer in 2015. Myanmar Carlsberg brews three brands of beer, Carlsberg, Tuborg and the new local brand “Yoma”, which in Burmese translates to “Mountain chain”. A complicated political system Myanmar Carlsberg is a joint venture between Carlsberg and Myanmar Gold Star (MGS) Breweries. This is the same partner Carlsberg worked with in the 90s, which was the last time the company was active in the country. Carlsberg owns 51% and MGS owns 49%. “It would have been extremely difficult to start up in Myanmar without a good partner” says Daniel Sjoegren. Daniel Sjoegren is the former Managing Director with a long international career in Carlsberg. Daniel has been in charge of the complex process to start-up business in Myanmar. “We had to have more than 200 different licenses from different authorities in order to start building the brewery and producing beer. And to be honest, these licenses have not been given as quickly as we would have liked” Daniel Sjoegren continues.

ALBANIA Ilda Londo porocilo.indb 51 20.5.2014 9:04:36 INTRODUCTION Policies on media development have ranged from over-regulation to complete liberali- sation. Media legislation has changed frequently, mainly in response to the developments and emergence of media actors on the ground, rather than as a result of a deliberate and carefully thought-out vision and strategy. Th e implementation of the legislation was ham- pered by political struggles, weak rule of law and interplays of various interests, but some- times the reason was the incompetence of the regulatory bodies themselves. Th e Albanian media market is small, but the media landscape is thriving, with high number of media outlets surviving. Th e media market suff ers from severe lack of trans- parency. It also seems that diversifi cation of sources of revenues is not satisfactory. Media are increasingly dependent on corporate advertising, on the funds arising from other busi- nesses of their owners, and to some extent, on state advertising. In this context, the price of survival is a loss of independence and direct or indirect infl uence on media content. Th e lack of transparency in media ratings, advertising practices, and business practices in gen- eral seems to facilitate even more the infl uences on media content exerted by other actors. In this context, the chances of achieving quality and public-oriented journalism are slim. Th e absence of a strong public broadcaster does not help either. Th is research report will seek to analyze the main aspects of the media system and the way they aff ect media integrity.

WPI routinely publishes these reports on its web site without editorial or peer review. For more information about the projects program at WPI, see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Projects. ABSTRACT Breweries produce tons of organic solid waste and millions of liters of wastewater. When discharged into the environment without treatment, these waste streams degrade aquatic ecosystems and can pose risks to human health. Working with SHUKALB, our team investigated Albanian brewery practices and identified process improvements to reduce operating costs and breweries’ environmental impact.
