100th CARNIVAL \-c,\'>\JRY C-1, 77 7 0

Saturday, 1st October Price 15p Programme Lucky N~ 8 5 2 CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Carnival in ; a very small group of people providing fun and enjoyment for countless thousands and also helping to provide facilities in the town by way of financial assistance for many clubs, organisations and associations. In 1977, we are creating a precedent, by deciding to donate _some of t~e profit from the Carnival to a National Charity, and the Committee unammously decided that the National Deaf Children's Society, and in particular the Royal School at Exeter, should benefit from our efforts. Please help us to fill the collecting tins and buy much-needed and vital equip- ment, so that those children from both ours and the surrounding area may have a happier and fuller life. Our grateful thanks go to all those people in the town who support us regularly every year; our Sponsors, without whose generous financial help the profit from the Carnival would be small; the Collectors, Marshalls and the Police, who undertake a mammoth task. And finally you, the public, without whom our Carnival ancestors strove for nothing. I have the privilege to be Chairman of the Carnival Committee .. Their work and initiative is unequalled by any Committee in the Town. Be pI,"oud of them, they deserve it! ANN HISCOCK

TIie National Deal Clllldren's Soclet1. • • The Royal School for Deaf Children at Exeter caters for 230 pupils drawn from the Wessex area which includes the Shaftesbury District. The School, founded in 1826, is supported by voluntary donations and is proud of its independence. About half those attending the School suffer from partial hearing, the remain- der are totally deaf. Our target is to present the school with three new units of hearing equipment which will cost around £350 each. A 14 year old boy wrote in the School Magazine- "Deaf people are alone, they do not understand hearing other people and they forget about it. Deaf people want to hear; we would like to listen to beautiful music, echoes, talking, noise, and not be deaf." His feelings must be shared with all deaf people everywhere, but we are concen- trating our efforts on the young.

OUR CARNIVAL MOTTO - "DO BEST CAN" • A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR DISPLAY BANDS & MAJORETTE TROUPE Formed in 1930 by the Rev. J. W. Graves with twelve 11-ycar old Girls selected from his Sunday School, the DAGENHAM GIRL PIPERS a~c now renowned as the Inter- nationally famous Pipe Band. Since their first professional engagement at the Lord Mayor's Show in 1931, they have appeared at countless important functions throughout the world, visiting over 40 countries. Known as Dagenham's Piping Ambassadors, they have retained their roots in the Essex town and travel an average of 30,000 miles a year. We arc proud to have them with us at Shaftesbury today, helping us to cdebratc our Centenary Carnival. The Band of PARKSTONE SEA CADET CORPS was re-formed in 1952 under the direction of its present Bandmaster Sub. Lieut. J. G. Webber, since when it has had numerous successes in contests. The Boys were voted the Best Sea Cadet Band in the Southern Arca in1974, 1975 and 1976. Last year they had the honour of taking part in Jersey's Battle of Flowers Procession and this year were one of only six Sea Cadet Bands invited to take part in the British Youth Band Association's Jubilee Parade in London. They first appeared in Shaftesbury Carnival last year when they won the Band Deport- ment Cup. CHRISTCHURCH BOYS' BRIGADE was formed in 1967 with ten instruments, but during the last decade they have increased in numbers to their present strength of forty boys. The Band has been Bournemouth Battalion Champions each year since 1970; they arc the current West of Champions and are runners-up to the National Boys Brigade Bugle Band Champions. This is their first appearance at Shaftesbury Carnival. POOLE SCOUT BAND AND CORPS OF DRUMS was formed only four years ago from various Troops within the Borough of Poole. They have entered many contests and among their numerous awards were 4th place in the large novice section of the National Scout Band Championships in 1974 and 4th place in the Bugle section of the Champion- ship class in following year. They have appeared on stage at Bournemouth Pavilion, and were privileged to play in the 1976 Lord Mayor's Parades at Cardiff and Plymouth. In July of this year they led the Royal British Legion Jubilee Parade at Sandhurst Military Academy, and have appeared on TV each week during the introductory theme of the popular BBC series 'Seaside Special'. This is their second appearance at Shaftesbury Carnival. THE CITY OF BATH SEA CADET CORPS under their Director of Music, Sub. Lt. F. G. Wyatt, RNR, was formed in 1969 as a Bugle and Drum Band but valve instruments have since been introduced. Their engagements this year have included Bath Search- light Tattoo and have played on HMS Hermes during Navy Days. They also played before HM the Queen during her Jubilee Tour of the West Country. They have taken part regularly in both our Carnival Processions since 1972 and won the Deportment Cup in 1974. RINGWOOD PIPE BAND, formed in 1972 is affiliated to Wellworthy Ltd., a local Engineering Firm. They are always firm favourites at Carnivals, first appearing at Shaftesbury in 1974. Their present strength of 26 members includes some Scotsmen. Pipe Major is Tom McKinty and Drum Major Bert Freeman. 14th EASTLEIGH MAJORETTE TROUPE were formed in 1969 and were the first Majorette Troupe in the South of England. They have won several troupe awards including British Majorettes Associations Southern Region Champions 1976. Ages range from 8 to 14 years.

We are sorry that it has not been possible to print details of all the Bands taking part in our Centenary Carnival; their history is no less interesting than the ones above, and all the Bands listed below have been winners of our Band Deportment Cup :- SHAFTESBURY TOWN BAND GILLINGHAM IMPERIAL SILVER BAND MERE MANOR BRASS BAND WILTON ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BAND ROYALTY GALORE!

Our Centenary Carnival Queen is 19 year old Fulvia Davis-Sellick. Fulvia was educated at St. Genevieve's Convent, Dorchester and Poole Technical College. She works as an assistant to a local Travel Agent. Among her interests are travelling and exploring; and her varied hobbies include swimming, horse riding, dancing, singing and reading. Fulvia was att.eudant to the Carnival Queens in 1975 and 1976. Her attendants this year are:-

Bernice Oliver, age 17, who was Carnival Princess in 1969. Lynne Munday, age 18, an attendant last year with Fulvia.

Fulvia, Bernice and Lynne all live in Shaftesbury.
