  • Church and Churchyard Memorial Inscriptions
CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS St MARY’S CHURCH FROME St QUINTIN INTRODUCTION Transcripts of the memorial stones in the church and churchyard of St. Mary’s Church, Frome St. Quintin were first made in 1986 by members of the Frome Valley History Society, led by Wendy Wright of Holywell House, Holywell.. The work was revised in 2009 by Graham and Jennifer Browne of Frome Farm House, Frome St. Quintin. The transcripts have been made to the best of our ability, bearing in mind the effects of weathering over sometimes quite a long period of time, and we believe them to be a true record of the material at the time of reading. In reading the following transcripts, the slashes represent the end of the line on the tombstone or memorial to guide the readers in finding the actual words for themselves. Where there is doubt about the actual wording due to erosion of the materials, either question marks or dashes will be found. The numbers on the plan reflect those of the typescript records. For further details of the men whose names appear on the two war memorials in the church, refer to the ‘Book of Remembrance’. • Villager 251 March 2016
The Villager Villager No. 251 March 2016 Looks like 2016 is going to be busy in Motcombe again - plans are underway for the Village Fete, volunteers always required! Moviola shows wonderful movies each month, it really makes a good social evening out with all the refreshments in the break. W.I. and Gardening Club always find interesting topics - it's a wonder they don’t run out of ideas. Great to see the Memorial Hall be so well used and the Methodist Hall is very busy with coffee mornings, lunch club and soup club. We are lucky to have a village with so many activities for all age groups Mil has sent an article about what brought the Chilmey’s to Motcombe it would be great if others follow suit - Motcombe is a very popular village as estate agents often mention. Discover inside how important the Churchyard is for wildlife conservation. Articles can be handed to Gail or Mike or delivered to the following: Winters Grace, Elm Hill, Motcombe or e-mail [email protected] telephone 01747 850865 or Motcombe Community Shop, or Tanders, Elm Hill Motcombe telephone 01747 852545 The Cottages in Church Walk There were once three thatched cottages in Church Walk but some years ago the two closest the main brook were made into one. It may seem odd that the stone and slated one in the centre is not also thatched. This is because in about 1800 the former cottages were burnt down and were rebuilt except for the centre one which was constructed in the late 1840s, it is said, from stone and slates left over after the church was rebuilt.

  • Blandford's Contribution to World War
BLANDFORD'S CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD WAR TWO compiled by M.J. Le Bas 2020 7.12 BLANDFORD PREPARES FOR WAR With war looming in 1939, Blandford Camp was reactivated a s a t r a i n i n g c e n t r e f o r reservists called up, and for new r e c r u i t s s e e n here. Many new huts were built for accommodation, as most of the huts from WW1 had long since been demolished or sold on. Some became the huts for the Blandford Scouts in Eagle House Gardens. INVASION? In 1940, Blandford received prominence when Prime Minister Churchill declared Blandford must become 'a strategic tank island to be defended at all costs'. This was in response to the threat of German invasion after the Fall of France in May. The German plan, one of many, was to land in August 1940 on the Dorset Coast “Operation Sealion”, and strike northward rapidly to the Bristol Channel, thereby capturing Blandford featured strongly in the German at a stroke the ports of Devon and plans. It lay on one of three routes the German Cornwall and enabling the landing Army would have taken, the others being of German forces unopposed. Maiden Newton and Fordingbridge, with Blandford and the crossing of the River Stour at it's bridge, being the most advantageous route. LOCATION ? . In order to confuse the invaders, town signs were ordered to be removed, here in particular the word BLANDFORD that was prominently displayed on street and sewer drain covers, and on the charity boards in the Parish Church.

  • Coarse Fishing Close Season on English Rivers
Coarse fishing close season on English rivers Appendix 1 – Current coarse fish close season arrangements The close season on different waters In England, there is a coarse fish close season on all rivers, some canals and some stillwaters. This has not always been the case. In the 1990s, only around 60% of the canal network had a close season and in some regions, the close season had been dispensed with on all stillwaters. Stillwaters In 1995, following consultation, government confirmed a national byelaw which retained the coarse fish close season on rivers, streams, drains and canals, but dispensed with it on most stillwaters. The rationale was twofold: • Most stillwaters are discrete waterbodies in single ownership. Fishery owners can apply bespoke angling restrictions to protect their stocks, including non-statutory close times. • The close season had been dispensed with on many stillwaters prior to 1995 without apparent detriment to those fisheries. This presented strong evidence in favour of removing it. The close season is retained on some Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, as a precaution against possible damage to sensitive wildlife - see Appendix 1. This consultation is not seeking views on whether the close season should be retained on these stillwaters While most stillwater fishery managers have not re-imposed their own close season rules, some have, either adopting the same dates as apply to rivers or tailoring them to their waters' specific needs. Canals The Environment Agency commissioned a research project in 1997 to examine the evidence around the close season on canals to identify whether or not angling during the close season was detrimental to canal fisheries.

The purpose of Parish Plans is to feed information back to the local authorities to give them a clear Wildlife, Conservation & the Environment 7 idea of what communities require, thereby allowing them to plan how budgets should be allocated in the future. Draft Conservation Area Appraisal 8 To that end it has been produced with assistance, advice and funding from West Dorset District Council Community Spirit and Healthcare 8 (WDDC), as well as the Frome Valley Parish Council (Parish Council or FVPC). The Parish Plan makes recommendations as to ways of either resolving or mitigating those concerns highlighted by the residents via the Housing, Property Ownership and Development 10 consultation process described below.
