[email protected] October 2014 vol 2 -Issue 2 PRAYING THE ROSARIES DAILY AS AN OLD TRADITION OF ALL MALTESE The use of beads or knotted ropes to count large numbers of prayers comes from the earliest days of Christianity, but the rosary as we know it today emerged in the second thousand years of Church history. The full rosary consists of 150 Hail Marys, divided into three sets of 50, which are further divided into five sets of 10 (a decade). Traditionally, the rosary is divided into three sets of mysteries: Joyful (recited on Monday and Thursday, and Sunday from Advent until Lent); Sorrowful (Tuesday and Friday, and Sunday during Lent); and Glorious (Wednesday and Saturday, and Sunday from Easter until Advent). (When Pope John Paul II introduced the optional Luminous Mysteries in 2002, he recommended praying the Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday, and the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday year-round, leaving Thursday open for meditation on the Luminous Mysteries.) “Honour the Blessed Virgin as the purest of all creatures. Bid her to obtain for you from God to be entirely freed from what is of this world. Look upon her as the masterpiece from God’s hands.” [St John Baptist de La Salle – Meditation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception] 1 Spain – Inauguration La Salle Amigo Youth Welcome Centre This new Welcome Centre provides shelter for young people between the ages of 12 and 17 who find themselves neglected and who have behavior problems. Twelve youth will be provided a home where they will receive attention and education. The centre has been in operation since April of this year although the official inauguration was held on September 22, 2014. The centre is subsidized by the Municipality of Valencia and it located next to the Saint Benilde community residence in Paterna. Many people were present for this event. Lasallians and members of the Amigo Foundation were together in the auditorium and this event was the occasion for looking towards a future filled with commitment and the beginning of a journey in which goals in service of society, young people and those in need will be interwoven. Brazil – Meetings of Young Lasallians The strength and commitment of Young Lasallians is seen reflected in District Meetings of Young Lasallians that were held during the month. The meeting for the Southeast Region took place from September 12 to 14 at Colegio La Salle in Toledo/PR and it brought some 200 young people together from Paraná Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Five different activities were held including group dynamics; celebrations and prayers; interviews and informal times for dialogue. Simultaneously there was a meeting for Young Lasallians which included former students who are involved in Youth Ministry. There were 25 participants with representation from the Panela Velha Group (Olla Vieja) made up of former students. During this same time a Regional Meeting of Young Lasallians was held at the Colegio La Salle Brasilia/ DF. There were 160 participants from schools in the La Salle network from the capital, Mato Grosso, Amazonas and Pará. “It was a time for living out Lasallian spirituality, offering young people the opportunity to share experiences of their educational communities,” said Brother Antonio August Coelho, pastoral ministry service coordinator for La Salle Brasilia. All three Brothers were surrounded by family, friends and Brothers to support, celebrate and welcome them. “We are grateful to God for the gifts of Brothers Roberto, David and Patrick to our community and mission. We consider ourselves blessed by their presence and challenged by their commitment to share their lives as we work and journey together to educate and evangelize the young God has entrusted to us. In a word, let us rejoice!” said Brother Tim Coldwell, FSC, General Councilor. The professed vows come for the three at the conclusion of their novitiate year at Mont La Salle in Napa, California. The novitiate is a year of formal preparation in the vocation of a Brother focused on prayer, reflection and discernment. The three new Brothers are now teaching at schools in their respective Districts. A Teacher’s Concerns and Possible Headaches!... With Cooperative as the byword, two achievements are possible: First, the classroom becomes a safe, orderly inviting place in which to teach and learn. Second, student self-esteem increases, which must happen if we want students to behave more responsibly and achieve more academically.” Introduction.] 3 Lasallian Calendar of Saints Saints and Martyrs Feast Days and Anniversaries October 1, 1995 Blessed Martyrs of the Rochefort Blessed Brother Roger (Pierre-Sulpice-Christophe Faverge) Born in Orléans, France, July 25, 1745 Entered the Novitiate in 1767 Blessed Brother Uldaric (Jean-Baptiste Guillaume) Born in Fraisans, France, February 1, 1755 Entered the Novitiate October 16, 1785 Blessed Brother Léon (Jean Mopinot) Born in Reims, France, September 12,1724 Entered the Novitiate January 14, 1744 Martyred in 1794 Beatified on October 1, 1995 October 9 Feast of Saint Jaime Hilario, (Tarragona, Spain),Saints Cyril Bertrán and Companions, Martyrs(Turón, Asturias, Spain) Saint Jaime Hilario Barbal Born January 2, 1898 Entered the novitiate February 24, 1917 Martyred January 18, 1937 Beatified April 29, 1990 Canonized November 21, 1999 October 9 Saint Martyrs of Turon Saint Cirilo Bertrán (José Sanz Tejedor) Saint Marciano José (Filomeno López López) Saint Julián Alfredo (Vilfrido Fernández Zapico) Saint Victoriano Pío (Claudio Bernabé Cano) Saint Benjamín Julián (Vicente Alonso Andrés) Saint Augusto Andrés (Ramón Martín Fernández) Saint Benito de Jesús (Héctor Valdivielso Sáez) Saint Aniceto Adolfo (Manuel Seco Gutiérrez) Saint Inocencio de la Inmaculada Canoure, CP (Manuel Canoura Arnau) Martyred in Spain on October 9, 1934 Beatified April 29, 1990 Canonized November 21, 1999 4 October 10, 1993 Beatification of the Brother Martyrs of Almeria Blessed Martyrs of Almeria Brother José Cecilio Rodríguez González Brother Amalio Zariquiegui Mendoza Brother Valerio Bernardo Herrero Martínez Brother Edmigio Primo Rodríguez Brother Evencio Ricardo Alonso Uyarra Brother Aurelio María Villalón Acebrón Brother Teodomiro Joaquin Sáiz Sáiz Marrtyred in Spain, August-September 1936 Beatified October 10, 1993 October 17, 1926 Beatification of Br.
