Rabbia Ahmed Awan (MBS181005) vii Abstract The seeds of cumin (Cuminum cyminum and Bunium persicum) used as spice for their distinctive aroma. These plants have significant medicinal, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant properties which indicates it high potential for use in medicine and food industry. In traditional medicines these plants are used to treat and improve some cases i.e. digestive and urinary disorders, diabetes, obesity and increasing breast milk. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by searching different studies in all relevant scientific databases. These studies support their uses either independently or as adjunct along with conventional drugs in metabolic syndromes, diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems, dyspepsia, inflammatory diseases, allergic rhinitis and all different types of human cancers. Various bioassays were performed to check the therapeutic efficacy of plants which are antimicrobial assays (antibacterial and antifungal), cytotoxic assays or brine shrimp lethality assay and antioxidant (DPPH assay). It was observed that both of this plant extract showed significant antibacterial activity against gram nega- tive bacteria (AT-10 and E. aerogenes). In antifungal assays, B. persicum showed highest percentage inhibition as compared to C. cyminum against Aspergillus- niger. Antioxidant was performed using DPPH method and it was observed that C. cyminum have more free radical scavenging activity as indicated by low IC50 value. Cytotoxic assays were performed by following brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA) and it was observed that C. cyminum showed more toxicity as compared to B. persicum. (I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants.     1 TAXONOMY, ORIGIN AND IMPORTANCE OF THE APIACEAE FAMILY JEAN-PIERRE REDURON* Mulhouse, France The Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae) is a plant family comprising at the present time 466 genera and about 3800 species (Plunkett et al., 2018). It is distributed nearly worldwide, but is most diverse in temperate climatic areas, such as Eurasia and North America. It is quite rare in tropical humid regions where it is limited to high mountains. Mediterranean and arid climatic conditions favour high species diversification. The Apiaceae are present in nearly all types of habi- tats, from sea-level to alpine zones: aquatic biotopes, grasslands, grazed pas- tures, forests including their clearings and margins, cliffs, screes, rocky hills, open sandy and gravelly soils, steppes, cultivated fields, fallows, road sides and waste grounds. The largest number of genera, 289, and the largest generic endemism, 177, is found in Asia. There are 126 genera in Europe, but only 17 are en- demic. Africa has about the same total with 121 genera, where North Africa encompasses the largest occurrence of 82 genera, 13 of which are endemic. North and Central America have a fairly high level of diversity with 80 genera and 44 endemics, where South America accommodates less generic diversity with 35 genera, 15 of which are endemic. Oceania is home to 27 genera and 18 endemics (Plunkett et al., 2018). The Apiaceae family appears to have originated in Australasia (region including Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia and several island groups), with this origin dated to the Late Cretaceous/ early Eocene, c.87 Ma (Nicolas and Plunkett, 2014).

In this study, as a comprehensive research on genetic diversity, forty nine cumin ecotypes, belong to nine Iranian regional sub-populations were assessed using RAPD markers. DNA extracted from cumin seeds through CTAB method. Twenty three RAPD markers were used for diversity assessment, in which 21 showed polymorphism. Allele frequency and polymorphism information content (PIC) of each locus were calculated by Power Marker version 3.25. Molecular variability among and within populations was assessed accordingly. Based on molecular data, Jacquard’s similarity coefficient was used to detect the phylogenic relationship; subsequently dendrograms were drawn based on UPGMA using NTSYS software. Cluster analysis among the populations categorized nine populations into two groups at the similarity level of 0.43, in which class one was consisted of only Golestan population and the rest were arranged in the second group.

Adansonia, sér. 3, 35 (2): 375-389. http://dx.doi.org/10.5252/a2013n2a9 ABSTRACT The gross morphology as well as fruit morphological and anatomical characters of twenty four taxa of subfamily Apioideae was investigated to show their taxo- nomic location as compared to Drude’s classification (1898). The classification of the studied taxa is summarised as follows: 1) Pimpinella L. of Drude’s tribe Ammineae is segregated alone in a separate branch; 2) some of the genera of tribe Ammineae namely Ammi L., Apium L., Petroselinum Hill, Ridolfia Moris and Carum L. are agglomerated in subgroup I of group I; 3) Chaerophyllum L. of tribe Scandicineae subtribe Scandicinae, Torilis Adans. of tribe Scandicineae subtribe Caucalinae and Cuminum L. of tribe Ammineae are separated in the form of separate branches from subgroup I of group I; 4) Bifora Hoffm. and Coriandrum L. of tribe Coriandreae are also separated together in subgroup II of group I; 5) Anethum L. of tribe Ammineae and Malabaila Hoffm. of tribe Peucedaneae subtribe Tordyliinae are clustered with Foeniculum Mill. of tribe Ammineae in subgroup III of group I; 6) Daucus L. of tribe Dauceae KEY WORDS Apiaceae, and Pseudorlaya (Murb.) It is a popular spice, for which the whole or ground dried ripe fruit, commonly called seed used. It is a major ingredient in both chili powder and curry, and is added to meat sauces, rice, bread, pickles, soups and other foods. Roman caraway is another common name for this member of the parsley family (Apiaceae). The only species in its genus, cumin exhibits a variety of plant types depending on the seed source. A small annual herb about 1-2 ft (0.3-0.6 m) tall, cumin grows upright as a single slender stem with many branches. Cumin seeds are rich sources of essential oils and have been actively researched for their chemical composition and biological activities. The strong, pungent green-spicy odor and flavor of cumin is attributable largely to cuminaldehyde, the main constituent of the essential oil, and other aldehydes. The prominent medicinal properties of cumin include anti-oxidant, antimicrobial, anti-carcinogenic/anti-mutagenic, anti-diabetic, immunomodulatory, anti-epileptic, estrogenic/anti-osteoporotic, anti-tussive, anti-aggregatory.

The essential oils were investigated by Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC), while quantitative identification of individual target organic acids and phenolic compounds were achieved by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover the high percentage oil (10.97%) and the major components were presented as Cuminaldehyde (14.27%), Vanillin (2.76%) and Anethole (1.93%) in the fully ripe stage of seeds. Also the essential oil was studied for its physical properties. Many organic acids were identified in fully ripe seeds in eight compounds comparative with unripe seeds. Salicylic and gallic acids were showed with a highest amounts in both stage of harvest seeds. Key words: Cuminum cyminum, volatile oils, organic acid, phenols, GLC, HPLC. 1.
