Jim Sundberg Jim had a long career for a catcher in Major League Baseball. He played 16 seasons, most of them with the Texas Rangers, but also spending time in Kansas City, Chicago and Milwaukee. Jim was widely renowned as the finest defensive catcher of his era, witness his 6 American League Gold Glove Awards. He was also a 3 time All-Star and was the catcher on the 1985 World Series Champion Royals. Following his playing career, Jim spent 6 years as the color analyst for the Texas Rangers television broadcasts. Jim has now made himself into one of the top motivational speakers for corporate and non-profit organizations. His refreshing personality and warm speaking style enable him to convey valuable insights in ways people can easily understand. Using his wit and humor to blend business principles with baseball analogies, Jim proves to be a top performer. Jim has three general keynote addresses that corporations benefit from. One focuses on change, another on the winning formula, and the third on team leadership and motivation. Additionally, Jim has developed 3 different and distinct workshops which he calls “The Three Seasons of Dynamic Teams”. Many major businesses have benefited from Jim’s dynamic presentations. Jim Sundberg was a class individual on the baseball diamond and he has only grown in that stature off the field. In July of 1977, at the age of 26, in a hotel room in Toronto where the Rangers were playing, Jim accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord & Saviour. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

Fair Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear fixed-effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more "full-time" years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and field, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on.
