The WPI team surveyed 16 waterfront districts, four in-depth, assessing their walkability using a tool created by the research team and conducted preference surveys to understand the perceptions of Hong Kong pedestrians. Because pedestrians value the shortest, safest, least-crowded, and easiest to navigate routes, this study found that confusing routes, unsafe or indirect connections, and a lack of amenities detract from the walkability in Hong Kong.     Chapter 5: Getting Around Hong Kong The Road Crossing Code It is safer to cross the road using footbridges, subways, “Zebra” crossings or “Green man” crossings. If you cannot find any such crossing facilities nearby, there are some basic steps for crossing roads that you need to observe: 1. Find a safe place where you can see clearly along the roads in all directions for any approaching traffic. 2. When checking traffic, stop a little way back from the kerb where you will be away from traffic. 3. Look all around for traffic and listen. However, electric/hybrid vehicles including motorcycles may operate very quietly. You need to look out for them in addition to listening. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Look all around and listen again. 4. Let the drivers know your intention to cross but do not expect a driver to slow down for you. 5. Do not cross unless you are certain there is plenty of time. Walk straight across the road when there is no traffic near. 6. Keep looking and listening for vehicles that come into sight or come near while you cross. 7. Do not carry out any other activities, such as eating, drinking, playing mobile games,using mobile phones, listening to any audio device or talking while crossing the road. Give all your attention to the traffic. Using crossing facilities Crossing aids are often provided to help you cross busy roads. Footbridges and subways: Footbridges, subways and elevated walkways are the safest places to cross busy roads as they keep pedestrians well away from the dangers of traffic.

    The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation HK Branch Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation Jointly Organized Site Visit to West Island Line, Contract 704 Date: 15 January 2011 (Saturday) Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm West Island Line is an extension of the existing MTR Island Line from Sheung Wan to Kennedy Town and the 3km alignment runs beneath the densely populated areas of Western District. Construction Works commenced in July 2009 and are expected to be complete in 2014. Contract 704 is the largest project for the West Island Line Extension which comprises of two underground cavern stations at Sai Ying Pun and Hong Kong University with associated 2 km running tunnels and 3km construction & pedestrian adits constructed by drill and blast, 100m soft tunneling by ground freezing method, nine entrance shafts with depth up to 80m by mechanical means. The project also includes three link bridges connecting to Hong Kong University at Pok Fu Lam Road, demolition of existing footbridge, Grandstairs of HK University, Centre Street Market We st Block, Whitty Street Toilet, David Trench Rehabilitation Centre and play area at David Lane for entrances construction after the completion of the Reprovisioning Works. To minimize the impact on traffic, the environment and public nuisance, much of the excavated spoil produced from the tunneling works will be transported by a fully enclosed conveyor to a temporary barging point at the Western District Public Cargo Working Area from where it will be removed by sea.     Consultancy Agreement No. NEX/1023 West Island Line Environmental Impact Assessment MTR Corporation Limited Final Environmental Impact Assessment Report 5 LANDSCAPE AND VISUAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT Introduction 5.1 This Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) covers the proposed West Island Line (WIL). This section assesses the potential landscape and visual impact due to the construction and operation of the proposed work in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO). Project Description 5.2 Figure 5.1.1 shows a location plan for the proposed development. Figures 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 show the existing aerial views. 5.3 The proposed WIL consists of approximately 3 km of underground railway system with permanent structures such as underground stations, railway tunnels, vent shafts, chiller plant, entrances, etc. A full description of the project, including construction works, is provided in Section 2 of this EIA report. 5.4 Only surface construction activities and permanent structures are assessed in this landscape and visual impact assessment. All underground activities and facilities are unlikely to impose landscape and visual impact, and hence are not considered in this report. Review of Planning and Development Control Framework 5.5 The existing and planned development framework for the proposed works and for the surroundings have been reviewed, to identify potential existing resources and sensitive receivers as well as neighboring planned land uses, and to ensure a high compatibility between the proposed works and the surroundings. Surrounding planning and development control of the proposed work is shown on Figures 5.1.5 to 5.1.7. 5.6 The approved Kennedy Town & Mount Davis Outline Zoning Plans No.: S/H1/15, Sai Ying Pun & Sheung Wan OZP No.: S/H3/21 and Mid-Levels West OZP No.: S/H11/13 have been examined.

Introduction This paper provides the latest updates on the West Island Line project. 2. Background The construction of the West Island Line began in July 2009 and is expected to complete this year. All major Civil and Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) contracts have been awarded. The construction works are in full swing. 3. Project Progress 3.1 Overall construction progress Currently, the overall works of the WIL has been completed about 83 per cent out of which about 85 per cent of civil works and 69 per cent of E&M works have been completed respectively. The WIL project is expected to be completed this year. The entire 3-km tunnel from Sheung Wan (SHW) Station to Kennedy Town (KET) Station broke through in November 2012. The track works is completed in July 2013 while the major structural works of the three stations were completed in October 2013. E&M works is underway including the installation of overhead line, communication system, train control system and signaling system. All blasting works for the railway tunnels, the overrun tunnel and the passenger adits are completed. 3.2 Sai Ying Pun (SYP) Section Station structural works are substantially completed while the E&M works and the installation of screen platform doors are in progress. Structural works for the SYP Station entrance at Sai Woo Lane work site is in progress. 1 In addition, structural works of the shaft at the former David Trench Rehabilitation Centre work site is on-going while the structural works for the Bonham Road station entrance are progressing well.

Meanwhile, service adjustment will be implemented on Route 2, 18, 720 and 720A. Details are as follows: NWFB Route 18X Route 18X will depart from Kennedy Town (Belcher Bay), via Sai Ying Pun, Route 4, Wan Chai, Island Eastern Corridor, North Point, Quarry Bay, Taikoo Shing, Sai Wan Ho and terminate at Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus. For departures from Shau Kei Wan, the bus will travel via Sai Wan Ho, Taikoo Shing, Quarry Bay, North Point, Island Eastern Corridor, Central, Route 4, Sai Ying Pun and arrive at Kennedy Town (Belcher Bay) Bus Terminus.
