Introduction Sicily is often characterized as resistant or immune to the dramatic processes of social and cultural change that affected the Mediterranean basin during Rome’s most intensive period of imperial expansion in the late Republic and the early Principate, and then as socially, politically, and culturally isolated from the wider Mediterranean world for the rest of the imperial period. 1 The usual evi- dence cited of Sicilian communities’ resistance or apathy to the cultural and material trappings of Roman imperial power is the limited use of Latin in pub- lic and private inscriptions, 2 as well as the lack of explosive urban growth and monumentalization on the island. For example, relatively few imperial-era, purpose-built administrative buildings (curiae, basilicae), leisure structures (bath houses, theaters, amphitheaters) or cult buildings have been identified in Sicily, even within the island’s six Augustan colonies. 3 1 Scholarship on the processes of cultural change in Rome and its empire that were described as “Romanization” for much of the twentieth century is extensive. Catania is the only Sicilian city in which multiple imperial-era bath complexes have been found, and only three cities are known to have acquired amphitheaters (Catania, Thermae, and Syracuse – all Augustan colonies). Latomus 74, 2015 2 LAURA PFUNTNER Sicily’s supposed political, social, and cultural isolation from the wider Roman world is usually attributed to the general neglect of the province by imperial authorities, the dominance of senatorial and imperial estates, and to the apathy of local elites, who showed little interest in civic euergetism and exhib- ited limited social mobility. 4 The relative paucity of monumental and epigraphic evidence, as well as the general silence of Roman historical writers on events in Sicily after the early Augustan period, led past generations of scholars to describe Sicily under the Principate as an island without history – in the words of BIAGIO PACE, “una pagina bianca”. 5 However, the view of Sicily as an economically, politically, and culturally isolated and impoverished province in the centuries after Augustus is increas- ingly being questioned in the light of new archaeological and epigraphic evi- dence, and it is perhaps most improbable for the Severan era (193-235 C.E.). 6 Sicily lay at the heart of the Severan empire, between Italy and Africa, and some of its cities experienced a relative burst in epigraphic activity, and possibly also in monumental construction, under the Severan emperors and in succeeding decades. These activities, their causes, and their consequences for the urban landscape will be the focus of this article. 4 In an important article on early imperial Agrigentum, D. CELEBRATING THE SEVERANS 3 The commemorative activities of Sicilian cities under the Severans also have relevance for broader discussions of urban life in the High Roman Empire. Modern scholarly assessments of the Severan era are mixed, likely reflecting our Roman sources’ ambiguity or hostility towards the dynasty. 7 On the one hand, the period witnessed urban growth and promotion in many regions, and so in some respects it may be seen as the culmination of the Anto- nine “golden age” of urban embellishment. On the other hand, some scholars have emphasized the pressures on communities, the increased signs of compul- sion, the tensions between local populations and imperial authorities, and the beginnings of urban decay that the monumental building projects and effusive dedications of the Severan era seek to conceal. The period can be viewed pes- simistically, therefore, as a precursor to the so-called “third century crisis” that marked the beginning of the end of Roman urbanism in the Western Mediter- ranean. 8 One criticism that can be leveled at recent assessments of urban develop- ment under the Severans is that they lean heavily on a few types of evidence (mostly monumental building projects) from a small number of provinces (mainly Africa). 9 As R.J.A. Wilson points out regarding Sicily, 10 a lack of new building under the Severans may not necessarily be evidence of a lack of vitality, especially in regions like Sicily where most cities had been founded centuries earlier, and already possessed the basic amenities of urban life. In addition, the diverse histories and political, economic, and social circumstances of urban communities in the various provinces should make it clear that the significance of the Severan era cannot be assessed in broad strokes, for the 7 See S. The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century.

Thus, while it is increas- ingly acknowledged that the duties of beneficiarii may have varied from place to place or from time to time, the manner in which the empire selected, assigned, and rotated its beneficiarii is conceived of as standardized. It certainly cannot be denied that this view is correct where certain aspects of the internal management of the beneficiarii are concerned. For example, gubernatorial beneficiarii were almost in- variably chosen from the ranks of the legions, and the rare exceptions to this rule were men drawn from citizen regiments of the auxilia. But in fact the internal management of the gubernatorial beneficiarii, and of the administrative infrastructure of which they formed an important part, was a very complex af- fair, which mixed elements of imperial standardization with others of variation. This was particularly the case after the middle of the second century. The focus will be the apologetic works of Tertullian, the Ad Martyras, the Ad Nationes and the Apologeticum written around 197 A.D. Popular biases against Christians, the Romanizing tendencies of local elites in North Africa, the marginalization of sub-elites, the influence of cultural and intellectual revolution known as the Second Sophistic Movement, and the political ideologies and propaganda of emperor Septimius Severus – all these influenced Tertullian’s attempt to construct and articulate a Christian identity capable of engaging the ever changing socio- political landscape of North African at the dawn of the third century A.D. I shall examine select areas in antiquity where identities were explored, contested and projected namely, socio- cultural, religious, and political. I have identified four spheres which I refer to as “sites” of identity construction, namely paideia, the individual, community and “religion”. Chapter One provides a brief survey of the various contexts of Tertullian’s literary production. It includes a short description of the socio-political landscape during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, a brief history of Christianity in Roman North Africa, an introduction to the person of Tertullian, and his place within the “apologetic” tradition.

    3. I.Sicily. An EpiDoc Corpus for Ancient Sicily Jonathan Prag*, James Chartrand**, James Cummings*** Abstract This paper introduces the EpiDoc corpus of inscriptions on stone for ancient Sicily, I.Sicily. The project is one of the first attempts to generate a substantial regional corpus in EpiDoc. The project is confronting a number of challenges that may be of wider interest to the digital epigraphy community, including those of unique identifiers, linked data, museum collections, mapping, and data conversion and integration, and these are briefly outlined in the paper. Introduction: what is I.Sicily I.Sicily is an online, open access, digital corpus of the inscriptions on stone from ancient Sicily.1 The corpus aims to include all texts in- scribed on stone, in any language, between approximately the sev- enth century BC and the seventh century AD. The corpus currently contains records for over 2,500 texts, and when complete is likely to contain c.4,000.
