Beyond Universal Theories in Planning, Urban, and Heritage Studies”, held in Palermo (Italy), March 2015. This selection of articles opens many questions about the current state of planning research and theory. It shows how new generations of planning researchers search rich and diverse literatures for conceptual inspiration to help in understanding diverse empirical situations. But because of this diversity, new discoveries may echo findings known to past planning scholars, and new conceptual vocabularies create frameworks with which to clothe ideas previously known, or developing in a similar way through diverse strands of intellectual endeavour. She has published extensively on planning systems in Europe; statutory, strategic, soft spatial planning; heritage planning and management; European spatial planning and EU cohesion policy; and quality and recognition of planning education. Simone Tulumello is a post-doc researcher at the University of Lisbon, Institute of Social Sciences and former Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Memphis, Department of City and Regional Planning (2016). His research interests are: critical studies of urban security; planning theory and cultures; power and politics in planning; urban futures; neoliberal urban trends; Southern European cities and the geography of crisis. He is author of Fear, space and urban planning (Springer, 2017) and articles in journals including Journal of Planning Education and Research, Urban Geography, International Planning Studies, Space and Culture, Cadernos Metrópole. Patsy Healey is professor emeritus at Global Urban Research Unit in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University. She has developed approaches to collaborative planning practices, linked to an institutionalist analysis of urban socio-spatial dynamics and urban governance. She is a past President of the Association of European Schools of Planning, was awarded the OBE (1999), and the RTPI’s Gold Medal in 2007. In 2009, she was made a Fellow of the British Academy. She is author of Collaborative planning: Shaping places in fragmented societies (UBC Press, 2006), Making better places (Palgrave, 2010) and co-editor of Crossing borders: International exchange and planning practices (Routledge, 2010). Ignacio Castillo Ulloa (Architect, M.Sc. Urban Management) is PhD Researcher at Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Berlin University of Technology. His research interests entail, inter alia, uneven socio-spatial development and alternative disruptive (local) practices that counteract it; critical urban research; and Lacanian theory to explore interrelations among planning theory, research and practice. He was involved in the elaboration of a new regional plan for the Great Metropolitan Area of Costa Rica (funded by EU) and the project ‘Improving governance in secondary cities in Bangladesh’ (sponsored by former GTZ). On his dissertation, he problematizes, within the scope of radical planning and through Lefebvrian spatial analysis, how protest action of urban-social movements may turn out to be a valuable asset to set off local community self-development schemes. Cora Fontana is a PhD student in Urban Studies at Gran Sasso Science Institute of L’Aquila and research assistant at the Academy of Architecture of USI, Mendrisio. She held a master degree in architecture at Sapienza - University of Rome, Department of Architecture (2013). During the master period she was visiting student at the University of Buenos Aires, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning (2012). Her main research fields are: urban informality, spatial planning and urban spatial transformation. Currently she is working on her PhD dissertation that focuses on the spatial development trajectory of the city of L’Aquila after the 2009 earthquake, and the governance of the reconstruction. Johanna Holvandus is a PhD student at the University of Tartu, Department of Geography, and a junior researcher at the Centre for Migration and Urban Studies. She obtained her BSc in Landscape Architecture (2011) at Tallinn University of Technology and holds a MSc in Human Geography and Regional Planning (2014) from the University of Tartu. Her main research interests include neighbourhood change and activism, collaborative urban governance and planning, and urban diversity. Kadri Leetmaa is a senior researcher in Human Geography at the Centre for Migration and Urban Studies, University of Tartu, Estonia. She holds a PhD in Human Geography (2008) from the University of Tartu. Her main research fields have been related to urban social geography including
