Written by Scots artist and playwright John Byrne, Tutti Frutti followed the fortunes of rock and roll band The Majestics who reform to play a 25th anniversary tour. Starring a stellar cast including Robbie Coltrane, Emma Thompson, Maurice Roeves, Richard Wilson and Katy Murphy, Tutti Frutti made its debut in 1987, achieving cult TV status before it toured as a sell-out stage National Theatre of Scotland stage show. Tony Nellany, Channel Manager & Commissioning Executive, BBC Scotland says: “Tutti Frutti has long held a special place in the hearts of viewers so we wanted to make a virtue of the chance to watch this cult classic again. As well as broadcasting new original content, the new BBC Scotland channel will delve into the archives to celebrate and showcase classic gems. Tutti Frutti will lead the way for viewers to revisit much-loved shows from the past which they still hold dear.” Ahead of the return of Tutti Frutti on Saturday 2 March, BBC Scotland will air the documentary, ‘Return of the Majestics’ where cast reflect on the phenomenal success of Tutti Frutti. Narrated by Billy Boyd, the documentary was aired to coincide with the National Theatre of Scotland’s sell-out stage shows which toured in 2006. In the BAFTA award-winning drama, The Majestics attempt to make a return to musical glory. Despite the death of lead singer Eddie in a freak car accident, manager Eddie Clockerty is determined to re- create the Majestic’s halcyon days. Clockerty recruits Eddie’s less-than-enthusiastic younger brother, Danny, to take centre stage. As the group performs in some of Scotland’s less salubrious clubs and pubs, their personal disagreements and private tragedies force the band to disintegrate. Is there any way the self-styled ‘Kings of Rock and Roll’ can avoid self-destruction and recapture their former glory? The new BBC Scotland channel launches on Sunday 24 February and can be found on the following EPG positions for viewers in Scotland - Freeview & YouView 115 HD / 9 SD, Sky 115, Freesat 106 & Virgin Media 108. BBC Scotland is also available on the BBC iPlayer.
