Brother David Steindl-Rast Papers
Special Collections and University Archives : University Libraries Brother David Steindl-Rast Papers 1926-2010 22 boxes (33 linear ft.) Call no.: MS 892 Collection overview Brother David Steindl-Rast was born Franz Kuno in Vienna, Austria, in 1926. He discovered The Rule of St. Benedict as a young man, which sent him on a search for an authentic version of Benedictine practice. This search brought him through the Second World War in Vienna, where he earned a Ph.D from the University of Vienna in 1952 and to the Mount Savior Monastery in Elmira, New York, where he became a monk in 1953. Along with his friend Thomas Merton, Brother David is one of the most important figures in the modern interfaith dialogue movement, leaving Mount Savior in the mid-1960s to study Zen Buddhism with Hakuun Yajutami, Shunayu Suzuki, and Soen Nakagawa. He was the first Benedictine to learn directly from Buddhist teachers and received Vatican support for his bridge-building work in 1967. Through Merton, Brother David met Thich Nhat Hanh, who introduced him to the peace movement and grounded Brother David's spirituality in a tradition of activism. When not in seclusion, Brother David has served as a teacher of contemplative prayer, the intersection of Zen and Catholicism, and gratefulness as a spiritual practice. Through many books and articles, lectures, and residencies in spiritual centers like Tassajara and the Esalen Institute, Brother David has developed an influential philosophy and much of the current popularity of mindfulness and Zen-influenced living and activism owes a debt to his teachings. -

Completing this project has reaffirmed that assertion for me. First and foremost, I recognize the tireless work of my supervisors in this project: Dr. Gabriela Polit Dueñas and Dr. Lorraine Moore. Without their guidance, knowledge, and patience, this project would not have been possible. I offer my sincerest thanks to the both of you. I would also like to recognize my other committee members for their support and contributions. Thank you to Ominiyi Afolabi, Héctor Domínguez-Ruvalcaba, and Maria Helena Rueda. Abstract The collection holds theatrical plays of the late 19th early 20th centuries, film screenplays from the Depression and New Deal periods, as well as television scripts from the 1950s. The majority of the plays were written, copyrighted, or possibly produced by Charles Morton and his agency. Collection of American Popular Drama, [Box #, Folder #], Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library Historical Note By the end of the 19th century in America there had developed a fairly large market for playbills and scripts of plays. Theater attendance had increased dramatically through the 19th century and had become progressively more accessible to a wider range of social classes and groups. Not surprisingly, a sort of “play piracy” developed as a consistent problem, particularly since the development of copyright law did not develop extensively until the 20th century. -

Marion Leonard Lived: June 9, 1881 - January 9, 1956 Worked as: film actress, producer, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Sarah Delahousse It is well known that Florence Lawrence, the first “Biograph Girl,” was frustrated in her desire to exploit her fame by the company that did not, in those years, advertise their players’ names. Lawrence is thought to have been made the first motion picture star by an ingenious ploy on the part of IMP, the studio that hired her after she left the Biograph Company. But the emphasis on the “first star” eclipses the number of popular female players who vied for stardom and the publicity gambles they took to achieve it. Eileen Bowser has argued that Lawrence was “tied with” the “Vitagraph Girl,” Florence Turner, for the honorific, “first movie star” (1990, 112). In 1909, the year after Lawrence left Biograph, Marion Leonard replaced her as the “Biograph Girl.” At the end of 1911, Leonard would be part of the trend in which favorite players began to find ways to exploit their popularity, but she went further, establishing the first “star company,” according to Karen Mahar (62). Leonard had joined the Biograph Company in 1908 after leaving the Kalem Company, where she had briefly replaced Gene Gauntier as its leading lady. Her Kalem films no longer exist nor are they included in any published filmography, and few sources touch on her pre-Biograph career. Thus it is difficult to assess her total career. However, Marion Leonard was most likely a talented player as indicated by her rapid ascension to the larger and more prominent studio.
