The project is designed to provide significant additional energy interconnection between Ireland, the UK and continental Europe with the aim of delivering increased security of supply, fuel diversity and greater competition. It is also designed to provide additional transmission network capacities, reinforcing the existing electricity grids in south-east Ireland and south Wales. The study area is approximately 160km in length and spans the St George’s Channel, including areas of landfall in Ireland and Wales. Its westernmost section intercepts the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford and the easternmost section incorporates an area of land surrounding Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire. -

ISSUE No 83 - SUMMER 2015 Thirty years ago this year, Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd started operations with its first Catalina. Here she is over the Kent coast on February 20th 1985 at the end of the ferry flight from South Africa and inbound to RAF Manston. Soon afterwards she had been repainted in RAF colours and was flying all over Europe (see inside front cover) Arthur Gibson £1.75 (free to members) PHOTOPAGE Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd operated its Wright Cyclone-powered 'Super Cat' between 1985 and 1998. This photograph was taken by a Royal Navy photographer in the vicinity of RNAS Portland in Dorset during an event there and before the aircraft had blister turrets placed back on the rear hull. It was painted to represent the RAF Catalina JV928/Y of 210 Squadron as flown by Flt Lt John Cruickshank when he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Later, it was repainted in RCAF colours as 9754/P to represent the other Catalina VC holder David Hornell, its Captain. Whether they mounted their attacks from the north or the south, when Norman barons invaded Wales after the Norman Conquest of 1066, they almost invariably ended up in West Wales and consolidated their position by building fortresses. Initially, these were simple “motte and bailey” constructions, typically built on a mound with ditches and/or wooden barricades for protection. -

It came into being purely as a result of the decision to locate a naval dockyard on land owned by the Meyrick family of Bush. Shipwrights and carpenters, blacksmiths and riggers flocked to the new yard from villages on the Haven and from other dockyard towns, notably Plymouth. They and their families needed to be housed, and Pembroke Dock rapidly grew in classic grid-iron style, the pattern of streets still very much apparent today. Royal Naval Dockyard (SM 961037): Protected by high walls and gun towers, the Naval Dockyard occupied an 80-acre site. Work on building the dockyard began in 1814 and by 1890 some 2,000 men were employed constructing ships for the Royal Navy. -

Canadian Airmen Lost in Wwii by Date 1942
CANADA'S AIR WAR 1942 updated 21/03/07 During the year the chief RCAF Medical Officer in England, W/C A.R. Tilley, moved from London to East Grinstead where his training in reconstructive surgery could be put to effective use (R. Donovan). See July 1944. January 1942 419 Sqn. begins to equip with Wellington Ic aircraft (RCAF Sqns.). Air Marshal H. Edwards was posted from Ottawa, where as Air Member for Personnel he had overseen recruitment of instructors and other skilled people during the expansion of the BCATP, to London, England, to supervise the expansion of the RCAF overseas. There he finds that RCAF airmen sent overseas are not being tracked or properly supported by the RAF. At this time the location of some 6,000 RCAF airmen seconded to RAF units are unknown to the RCAF. He immediately takes steps to change this, and eventually had RCAF offices set up in Egypt and India to provide administrative support to RCAF airmen posted to these areas. He also begins pressing for the establishment of truly RCAF squadrons under Article 15 (a program sometimes referred to as "Canadianization"), despite great opposition from the RAF (E. Cable). He succeeded, but at the cost of his health, leading to his early retirement in 1944. Early in the year the Fa 223 helicopter was approved for production. In a program designed by E.A. Bott the results of psychological testing on 5,000 personnel selected for aircrew during 1942 were compared with the results of the actual training to determine which tests were the most useful. -

Caring for Military Sites of the Twentieth Century efence is a recurring theme in Welsh archaeology. DJustly famous for its impressive Iron Age hillforts and spectacular medieval castles, Wales also possesses military remains of international importance from twentieth-century struggles: especially World War 1 (1914–1918), World War 2 (1939–1945), and the Cold War (1946–1989). Many sites were demolished through official clearance schemes or have disappeared as a result of agricultural improvements, forestry plantation and development activity. However, many remain, either as standing structures or buried archaeological features. The events that led to their creation have profoundly affected our families, communities and landscape, and public interest in these remains is growing. Their survival or destruction is dependent on future management. This booklet introduces the range of twentieth- century military sites that can be found in Wales and explains their importance to our understanding of the recent past. -

List of Royal Canadian Air Force stations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Page 1 of 16 List of Royal Canadian Air Force stations From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is a list of stations operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), or stations where RCAF units existed, from 1924 until unification into the Canadian Forces on February 1, 1968. Some of the RCAF stations listed in this article link to facility descriptions containing the prefix "CFB" (Canadian Forces Base) or "CFS" (Canadian Forces Station). These facilities were at one time RCAF stations, but changed to CFBs or CFSs following unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968. Most former RCAF stations still in use by the Canadian Forces are now operated by Air Command (AIRCOM). During the 1990s, most AIRCOM squadrons on Canadian Forces Bases were reorganized into "wings" as the primary lodger unit. Consequently, many Canadian Forces Bases used as air force bases are frequently referred to without the prefix CFB, e.g., "CFB Shearwater" is also referred to as "12 Wing Shearwater", with 12 Wing being the primary lodger unit at CFB Shearwater. All RCAF facilities followed the naming tradition of the Royal Air Force, whereby the prefix RCAF (vs. RAF) was affixed.
