The Unaccusative Hypothesis Perlmutter [1] has been widely applied to Mandarin Chinese studies, whereas the studies from historical and formal syntax perspective under this framework are rare. Therefore, this paper first investigate whether the Unaccusative Hypothesis can be applied to Archaic Chinese and then conduct syntactic analysis on the “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction as well as the formation of “NP1exp+Vunaccu+NP2” construction. The results show that the Unaccusative Hypothesis can be applied to Archaic Chinese. The “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction may look like object-preposing constructions and topic constructions, but it is better analyze it as a construction in which the NPtheme standing in the subject position. What is more, I argue that the “NP1exp+Vunaccu+NP2” construction comes from a morphological or lexical causative construction and has a competitive relationship with the causative constructions in the process of the historical development of Chinese. The “Vunaccu+NPtheme” constructions are actually two-place unaccusative sentences with omitted causer or experiencer. Only the “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction is the real one-place unaccusative construction in which the NPtheme generates in the object position in deep structure and moves to the subject position in surface structure for case requirement. ‘Using the Past to Serve the Present’: Comparative Perspectives on Chinese and * Western Theories of the Origins of the State Yuri Pines and Gideon Shelach One of the interesting peculiarities of the formative age of Chinese intellectual tradition, the Zhanguo period (戰國, ‘Warring States,’ 453–221 BCE), is its thinkers’ preoccupation with the origin of the state. Several recent studies by Chinese and Western scholars have analyzed Zhanguo theories of the formation of political and social institutions, either in the context of the evolution of contemporaneous political and philosophical discourse or as part of ancient Chinese mythology.1 Our discussion proposes a different perspective. By comparing Zhanguo theories of the origin of the state with parallel views developed in Europe and North America in the age of Enlightenment and beyond, we hope to disclose common factors that influenced theoretical thinking in both cases, and thereby to contribute to a general discussion about the evolution of human political thought. We believe that an analysis of ancient Chinese discourse may offer insights into the ways in which the social and political agendas of thinkers shape their theoretical approaches – in ancient China no less than elsewhere. Critics may argue that juxtaposing thinkers from such different cultural and chronological backgrounds is like comparing apples and oranges. By Wai-yee Li. Cam- bridge, MA and London, England: Harvard University Asia Center, 2007. Pp. xxii + 449. $49.50/£36.95. The Readability of the Past in Early Chinese Historiography is a most welcome addition to the growing number of Western-language studies on the Zuo zhuan 左傳. Wai-yee Li’s eloquent book is the fruit of impeccable scholarship. It puts forward an abundance of insightful and highly original analyses and fully demonstrates the advantages of the skilful application of literary techniques to early Chinese historiography. This work is sure to become an indispensable tool for any scholar interested in the Zuo zhuan or early Chinese historiography in general. Furthermore, many of Li’s observations are likely to encourage further in-depth research on this foundational text. To illustrate the importance of The Readability of the Past, it is worth high- lighting its position vis-à-vis prior Western-language studies on the Zuo zhuan. Oddly enough, despite its standing as the largest pre-imperial text, despite its canonical status, and despite its position as a fountainhead of Chinese historiography—the Zuo zhuan was virtually neglected by mainstream Occidental Sinology throughout the twentieth century. Joint Center for Soft Matter and Biological Physics and Condensed Matter Seminar Prof. Qi-Huo Wei Department of Physics and Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent State University, Kent, OH “Printing Molecular Orientations as You Wish” Date/Time: Monday, 21 October 2019, 4:00pm -5:00pm Location: 304 Robeson Hall Abstract: Liquid crystals consisting of rod-shaped molecules are a remarkable soft matter with extraordinary responsivity to external stimuli. Techniques to control molecular orientations are essential in both making and operating liquid crystal devices that have changed our daily lives completely. Traditional display devices are based on uniform alignments of molecules at substrate surfaces. In this talk, I will present a new photopatterning approach for aligning molecules into complex 2D and 3D orientations with sub-micron resolutions. This approach relies on so-called plasmonic metamasks to generate designer polarization direction patterns and photoalignments. I will present the basic principles behind this approach and a number of intriguing applications enabled by it, including micro-optical devices for laser beam shaping, commanding chaotic motions of bacteria, and creating topological defects with designer structures. Qi-Huo Wei studied in the Physics Department at Nanjing University and got his PhD in condensed matter physics in 1993. He is currently a professor at the Advanced Material and Liquid Crystal Institute in Kent State University, USA. He made original contributions to the basic understanding of a diverse set of topics, including single-file diffusion, plasmonic coupling in nanoparticles, Brownian motion of low symmetry colloids, and photoalignment patterning of molecular orientations. He was an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow between 1996 and 1999 at University of Konstanz in Germany, and a recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2011. -

T’OUNG PAO T’oungThe “Masters” Pao 101-4-5 in (2015) the Shiji 335-362 www.brill.com/tpao 335 The “Masters” in the Shiji Martin Kern (Princeton University) Abstract The intellectual history of the ancient philosophical “Masters” depends to a large extent on accounts in early historiography, most importantly Sima Qian’s Shiji which provides a range of longer and shorter biographies of Warring States thinkers. Yet the ways in which personal life experiences, ideas, and the creation of texts are interwoven in these accounts are diverse and uneven and do not add up to a reliable guide to early Chinese thought and its protagonists. In its selective approach to different thinkers, the Shiji under-represents significant parts of the textual heritage while developing several distinctive models of authorship, from anonymous compilations of textual repertoires to the experience of personal hardship and political frustration as the precondition for turning into a writer. Résumé L’histoire intellectuelle des “maîtres” de la philosophie chinoise ancienne dépend pour une large part de ce qui est dit d’eux dans l’historiographie ancienne, tout particulièrement le Shiji de Sima Qian, qui offre une série de biographies plus ou moins étendues de penseurs de l’époque des Royaumes Combattants. Cependant leur vie, leurs idées et les conditions de création de leurs textes se combinent dans ces biographies de façon très inégale, si bien que l’ensemble ne saurait être considéré comme l’équivalent d’un guide de la pensée chinoise ancienne et de ses auteurs sur lequel on pourrait s’appuyer en toute confiance.
