Havingread the first two books inthe Maze Runner series, I decided to venture into book three, The DeathCure byJames Dashner. This book picks up right where book two left off, the maincharacter Thomas beingrecaptured bythe organizationWICKED. Theyhave chosenThomas and his remainingfriends to participate inthe finalstage oftestingto fight a disease called “The Flare”. We are brought alongside Thomas ona journey out into a zombie-like apocalyptic world.I had a two-sided experience withreadingthis book. Onone hand, I thoroughlyenjoyed the adventure Dashner takes us on. I loved the picture he paints ofhow biologicalwarfare could lead to the crumble ofsocietyas we know it. The fictional, yet realistic take onwhat the future ofearthcould hold thrilled me. The world Dashner describes resembles what we see around us today, onlywithan eerie twist. Onthe other hand, I felt that the dialogue was slow and a bit sticky. I would recommend devouringthis book at a fast pace, enabling youto speed throughthe sometimes-stale dialogue and enjoythe plot. I would definitelyrecommend this book for youngadult readers but perhaps not anyhigher readinglevel.

  • It Started with the Maze…

    It Started with the Maze…

It started with the maze… In The Maze Runner Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) woke up as he was being delivered to the glade. He had no memory of who he was or why he’d become a member of a community of young people; among them Minho (Ki Hong Lee), lead maze runner; Newt (Thomas Brodie- Sangster), a good friend and advisor, Gally (Will Poulter), a leader and adversary and Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female glader, with whom Thomas may have a potentially dark history. Together they are trapped, surrounded by 200 foot walls and an ever-changing maze. Bad turns to worse when the gladers finally escape the maze only to discover they are in the middle of a desolate wasteland called The Scorch. In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials , Thomas and the surviving gladers met new allies while discovering clues about a mysterious group behind all of their “tests” – an organization known as WCKD. With Maze Runner: The Death Cure the motives of WCKD become clearer: Dr. Ava Paige, WCKD’s executive director is close to what she believes is a cure for the disease known as The Flare, an infection that has decimated the world’s population. But the cure comes by sacrificing the few young people left in the world who are apparently immune. In order to free those who have been rounded up as test subjects, including his friend Minho, Thomas must now band together with fellow survivors, old and new, and take the battle to what may be the last remaining city and the final stronghold of WCKD.

The two of them then looked at each other for a long moment, catching their breath, somehow reliving in those few seconds all the things they’d gone through, all the death, all the pain. And mixed in there was relief, that maybe – just maybe – it was all over.” – The Death Cure, page 319 Dashner, James. The Maze Runner. New York: Delacorte, 2009. PZ7. D2587Maz 2009. When Thomas is pulled from a dark metal box with only vague memories of his past, he is introduced to a new life in the Glade. A grassy area dotted with ramshackle buildings, animal pens, and trees, the Glade is inhabited by a group of teenage boys. Some of the boys were sent to the Glade as much as two years earlier; none remember the life they had before. Surrounding the boys’ new home is a Maze which, despite exploring every day, no Glader has ever solved. But when the boys stop receiving their regular supplies and the monsters – known as Grievers – living in the Maze begin attacking the Glade each night, the boys know that solving the Maze has become not just their only way home, but their only chance to survive.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Literature Can

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Literature can be defined as a creative work of art, an object that an artist makes (Grace, 1965: 55). Several of literary products offer pleasure and benefit to the readers. Such as, novel, poem, short story, etc. by reading these literary products, the readers can take some lessons because usually the authors put a message in their works. Otherwise, through reading a literary work, the readers will have more knowledge about the essence of life. If the readers understood the meaning of the message in the works deeply they would be wiser in their life. The author of literature expresses human problems and human lives through the literature. Literature, in its broadest sense, is any written work; etymologically the term derives from Latinliteratura/litteratura "writing formed with letters", although some definitions include spoken or sung texts. More restrictively, it is writing that possesses literary merit, and language that foregrounds literariness, as opposed to ordinary language. Literature can be classified according to whether it is fiction or non-fiction and whether it is poetry or prose; it can be further distinguished according to major forms such as the novel, short story or drama; and works are often categorized according to historical periods or their adherence to certain aesthetic features or expectations (genre). Literature has a close relationship with human life, Swingewood and Laurenson (1972: 13) argue that literature is reflecting various fact and social phenomena and problem in society, like: class structure, conflict family, relationship, a possibility divorce, friendship and population phenomena that actually happened in society.

AN ECOCRITICAL ANALYSIS OF NATURE AND CULTURE IN THE MAZE RUNNER TRILOGY NOVEL BY JAMES DASHNER A Thesis Submitted to Faculty of Letters and Humanities In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Strata One (S1) ARDHA PRIMA TAHIER 1113026000044 ENGLISH LETTERS DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF LETTERS AND HUMANITIES STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SYARIF HIDAYATULLAH JAKARTA 2017 ABSTRACT Ardha Prima Tahier, An Ecocritical Analysis of Nature and Culture in The Maze Runner Trilogy Novel by James Dashner. A Thesis: English Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Letters and Humanities, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah, 2017. The research aims to reveal how nature is presented, what kind of human attitude the characters demonstrate, and how the interconnection between nature and culture is depicted in The Maze Runner trilogy novel. To achieve the purpose, the researcher investigates five environmental aspects within the trilogy: the representation of nature, nature exploration, the interconnection of nature and culture, technology, and political impact on nature. By applying ecocritical approach and descriptive qualitative method, the analysis discovers a quite deep environmental value proposed by The Maze Runner trilogy that nature is represented through a metaphorical object of home; the characters then demonstrate a lack of human attitude towards nature viewed from their explorations on nature; and the interconnection between nature and culture is based on the examination of an inappropriate encounter between a desert and a city which leads to the absence of a boundary between the two interconnected concepts, and how a totalitarian government induces disrespect attitude towards nature by misusing advanced technology. Hopefully, this research is able to acquaint Ecocriticism as a compelling theory of literary criticism, and most importantly, contribute to the preservation of nature through academic way.
