Indus Airlines, SCO 17-18-19, Sector 17-B. The Chandigarh Administration is organizing the Udit Narayan Nite on December 29 at Leisure Valley, Sector 10 as part of its New Year Festival. Udit Narayan is renowned playback singer who has received much acclaim and fame over the years. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was the first big musical hit movie of Udit Narayan. With songs like ‘Ae Mere Humsafar’, Akele Hain To Kya Gham Hai’ and of course the evergreen ‘Papa Kehte Hain’for which he won his first Film Fare award. The musical success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak made Udit Narayan an overnight star. He was hailed as the ‘screen voice’ of Aamir Khan particularly after the songs of Dil and songs like ‘Pehla Nasha’ from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar once again proved to be chartbusters. But Udit went on to sing hit songs in films starring other actors as well a case in point being Beta and Laadla starring Anil Kapoor which had songs like ‘Koyal Si Teri Boli’ and ‘Ladki Hai Kya’ respectively. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge brought Udit Narayan more of stardom and respect. The turning point of his career came with this movie. Meanwhile Udit had sung ‘Jaadu Teri Nazar’ and ‘Tu Mere Saamne’ rendered for Shah Rukh Khan in Darr. He went on to sing other hit songs like ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’, ‘Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane’ and ‘Najaane Mere Dil Ko Kya Ho Gaya’ for Shah Rukh Khan again in the mega musical blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge. After the songs of Dil To Pagal Hai,Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and ‘ Ae Ajnabi’ from Dil Se he is now being hailed as the screen voice of Shah Rukh Khan. But he has also sung super hit songs for actors like Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar making him one of the few male playback singers to have sung for all the top actors. During his career, Udit Narayan has sung in more than 2600 Hindi films and in 15 indian language films like Hindi, Bengali, Assamess, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannad, Telegu, Garwali, Manipuri, Haryanvi and Maithili. Udit Narayan also acted in two Nepali films : Kusumey Rumal and Peerati. Rajesh Roshan who gave him his first break for the film Unees Bees in 1980 starring Rakesh Roshan and Mithun Chakraborty. Even after he sang for Unees Bees nothing clicked for him as the film flopped and the struggling period continued. For over a decade he had to work very hard and nothing seemed to work for him. Some of his private albums are Bhajan Sangam ,Bhajan Vatika ,I love You ,Dil Deewana , Yeh Dosti ,Love is Life,Jhumka de Jhumka, ,Sona No Ghadulo , Dhuli Ganga , Ma Tarini, and many more… Udit Narayan has performed approximatively 1050 stage shows in India and abroad like U.S.A, Canada, West Indies, Far East, U.K, South Africa and many European countries. Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.
