He has sought cross-border implementation of the Convention between Albania , Kosovo and Macedonia , for maintaining a clean environment especially when it comes to the river cascade . Fierza plant director said that AEC has set up a working group to verify the situation , and asked for cooperation of all institutions for an end to this disastrous situation for the environment . Meanwhile , by the prefecture different from what was stated yesterday has not started cleaning residues on the surface of the lake , but verify the situation . Currently there are 6 groups that are operating on the ground . Polluted area of Lake Fierza turns 25 square kilometers . According to the prefecture are contacted by firms which make recycling of waste for cooperation . Once there are 120 cubic meter plastic waste , hospital , urban and chemicals in Lake Fierza that cannot be destroyed by burning in the area . In 1993 Lake Fierza by the Council of Ministers has declared a priority area for tourism development . But, despite this decision and frequent denunciations Fierza pollution facing a weird situation . Spurred by this pollution of them, except Drin basin runoff and downloaded tons of waste , is filed yesterday Task Force for intervention and cleaning the lake . Creating Awareness of Water Pollution through Monitoring of Lake Fierza By Robert Boulanger, Zulean Cruz-Diaz, Robyn Domanico, Arun Donti Creating Awareness of Water Pollution through Monitoring of Lake Fierza An Interactive Qualifying Project Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science Submitted By Robert Boulanger Zulean Cruz-Diaz Robyn Domanico Arun Donti Date: December 17th, 2015 Report Submitted To: Professor Robert Hersh, Advisor Professor Robert Dempski, Advisor Worcester Polytechnic Institute This report represents work of WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its web site without editorial or peer review. For more information about the projects program at WPI, see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Project Abstract Lake Fierza, an artificial reservoir in northeastern Albania, suffers from pollution (heavy metals, urban, agricultural, and industrial waste) but lacks publicly accessible data regarding the contaminant levels and sources of pollution. Our project will establish a summer program for university aged students and local residents to sample and monitor Lake Fierza and to educate the local community about the causes and effects of pollution in the lake. We recommended ways Borderless can publicize and run the program, establish community support, monitor pollutant and chemical levels of the lake, as well as publish monitoring data. We created a guidebook that also contained a schedule of activities included in the program and the budget required to host students and run these activities. i Acknowledgements Our team would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped us through this project and contributed to its success and completion.

The country is linked with the rest of the world via land, sea and air routes. Characterized by a distinct mountainous landscape, the average altitude of Albania is 700 meters above the sea. Based on the structure, composition and shape of the landscape, four physical- geographic zones are distinguished: Alps, Central Mountainous Region, Southern Mountainous Region and Western Lowland. The highest peaks are those in the Alps and the Eastern Mountains (Korabi 2751 m) and the lowest peaks are located in the western coast area. The landscape is intersected by the valleys of Vjosa, Devoll, Osum, Shkumbin, Erzen, Mat and Drin rivers, eastward and westward, which enable the connection of Adriatic Sea with the internal part of the country and the Balkans Albania lies in the Mediterranean climatic zone, characterized by a hot dry summer, strong sun- shine and generally mild winter with abundant rainfalls. Annual average rainfall is 1430 mm. Situ- ated along the Adriatic and Ionian Sea coast, Albania constitutes one of the key points of intersec- tion for the roads crossing the Western Mediterranean into the Balkans and Minor Asia. Albania ensures via sea routes the connection with other world countries and that of the central regions of the Balkans Peninsula with the Adriatic coast.

  • Assessment of the Water Quality and Trends at the Drini Cascade System Based on Plankton Data
Assessment of the water quality and trends at the Drini cascade system based on plankton data Spase Shumka1, Aleko Miho2 1Agriculture University of Tirana, 2 FNS Tirana University Tirana-Albania Abstract Its well known that eutrophication processes caused by an enrichment in nutrients results in an increase of photosynthetic biomass. In the water ecology however, the factors which drive the shift in species composition of the assemblage along trophic gradients are yet poorly understood (Reynolds, 1996). Being rather tolerant to different environmental conditions, many zooplankton species are good indicators of water quality and can be used for the ecological monitoring of water bodies. The aim of this study done in the course of Drin/Drim POL (A Norwegian Research Council support) was to explore fauna of Rotifera-Cladocera and Copepoda (Cyclopoda & Calanoida) from Lake Ohri, Micro Prespa, Macro Prespa, Fierza and Shkodra and to determine the water quality on the basis of the noted bioindicative zooplankton species. During the investigated period 118 species were identified. Their qualitative composition varied dependent on season and locations. The most diverse composition was recorded in summer. The rotifer composition in the quiet bays with macrophyte vegetation is rich and more exuberant then in sand localities. The most of the noted species were oligo- β-mesosaprobic and _- mesosaprobic indicators, except Rotaria rotatoria that belongs to α-mesosaprobic water. Saprobiological testing based on rotifera showed that the water was oligo- β.mesosaprobic. Key words: Lake Ohrid; Rotifera; bioindicator; qualitative and quantitative composition; saprobiological testing; oligo- β- mesosaprobic Introduction Drini River watershed comprises a considerable area of 14173 km2 (within Albania) (Kabo, 1990-91), continuing also beyond Albanian borders, covering very important aquatic ecosystems, not only from the economic point of view but also naturally.

Neziraj, L. Moisiu, A. Avxhi, A. Serjani, A. Ahmetaj Albanian geological Survey: Rruga Myslim Keta, Tirana, Albania ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Tropoja municipality is one of 61 municipalities of Albania. The total population is 20,517 (2011 census), in a total area of 1057.30 km2. It is situated on the northen part of Albania at the border of Montenegro and Kosovo. This municipallity has in administration 8 administrativ units : Bajram Curri, Fierza, Lekbibaj, Marge-gaj, Llugaj, Bujan, Bytyçi dhe Tropoj, two cities (Bajram Curri and Fierza) and 68 villages. The compilation of the geosites maps of the Tropoja municipalities has been realized on the fra- mework of a three years project (2015-2017) titled “The geoheritage maps of municipalities”, a project proposed and financed by the Geological Albanian Survey. In order to define the state of the art in geosite studies in the Tropoja Region and to identify the geosites projects developed by public or private institutions, a bibliographic research and field data collection was performed. at the end are collected both historical and recent data, but are no left a part the information found out from unpublished paper written from local people. An ArcGIS 10.0 software was used for elaboration and displaying the geosites in. On the end of project on the Tropoja territory are identified the following parks: Valbona Valley (Amfiteatri malor i Valbonës), National park Gashi river, Strict Nature Reserve /scientific reserve Fierza’s lake, Park natyror Rajonal Nikaj-Mërturi, regional natural Park Tropoja municipality is remarkable because of its variety geology and very magnificant geomor- fology including mountains, hills and fields.
