Box 9020082 San Juan, PR 00902-0082 Dear Governor Rosselló, I write as president of the American Statistical Association to respectfully urge you to keep Puerto Rico’s statistical agency, El Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics, PRIS), and its board of directors fully independent. I also draw your attention to the 2,800 individuals—and still growing—who have signed a petition with this same request.1 At this critical historical juncture, Puerto Rico needs accurate, objective, and timely statistics. Government statistics empower the economy, serve the health and welfare of citizens, improve governance, and inform decisions and policies in the public and private sectors, among many other vital functions. Government statistics are also fundamental to evidence-based policymaking, the engagement of which is on a rapid rise in local, state, and federal governments. To address the challenges posed by its decade-long economic recession and the devastation of back-to-back hurricanes, Puerto Rico must chart its path toward sustainable recovery using reputable and reliable data and statistical methods. Because of their broad and profound importance, it is imperative that government statistics be produced through rigorous scientific processes and analyses performed by experts that can function without improper outside influence. Government statistics must be independent, objective, accurate, and timely and be perceived as such. It is just as important to have adequate statistics on a variety of topics. PRIS has demonstrated repeatedly it has the expertise to function independently to produce rigorous, objective, and accurate statistics for the benefit of Puerto Rico and its people. -

(Three illustrations: nos. 2I-23) HE mountaineering seasons of I 962 and I 963 have seen an increase in expeditionary activity beyond the well-trodden Central Andes of Chile. This activity is expected to increase in the next years, particularly in Bolivia and Patagonia. In the Central Andes, \vhere most of the mountaineering is concen trated, the following first ascents were reported for the summer months of I962: San Augusto, I2,o6o ft., by M. Acufia, R. Biehl; Champafiat, I3,I90 ft., by A. Diaz, A. Figueroa, G. and P. de Pablo; Camanchaca (no height given), by G. Fuchloger, R. Lamilla, C. Sepulveda; Los Equivo cados, I3,616 ft., by A. Ducci, E. Eglington; Puente Alto, I4,764 ft., by F. Roulies, H. Vasquez; unnamed, I4,935 ft., by R. Biehl, E. Hill, IVI. V ergara; and another unnamed peak, I 5,402 ft., by M. Acufia, R. Biehl. Besides the first ascent of the unofficially named peak U niversidad de Humboldt by the East German Expedition, previously reported by Mr. T. La dispersión por endozoocoria puede incrementar las probabilidades de supervivencia y acelerar la germinación de las semillas (Howe & Smallwood 1982). En el marco del estudio de animales dispersores de semillas deben evaluarse tres atributos: 1) legitimidad del dispersor 2) eficiencia del dispersor y 3) efectividad del dispersor (Bustamante et al. 1992, Bustamante & Canals 1995). La legitimidad se refiere a la viabilidad de las semillas que pasan por el tracto digestivo y puede cuantificarse como la proporción de semillas defecadas viables (Herrera 1989). La eficiencia suele cuantificarse como la proporción de semillas defecadas en sitios donde puedan germinar y establecerse (Reid 1989); mientras que la efectividad puede evaluarse como la proporción de plántulas reclutadas a través de la diseminación de semillas por un dispersor (Reid 1989). -

Of this total, 51% is characterised as arable land, 16% as forest, 4% as permanent pasture and other grazing land, and 29% as degraded land unsuitable for cultivation. The eco-climate of the country varies from extreme arid to super humid. The arid and semi-arid regions together constitute over 40% of the country’s total land surface and are spread over ten States (Table 1). The climatic conditions in these areas do not support much growth and regeneration of plant species. Consequently, the vegetation is quite sparse. The forest cover in arid and semi-arid tracts of India varies from 1 to 10%. Furthermore, the forests in these regions are not species rich. Table 1. Extent of arid and semi-arid regions in India. Trees in the farming systems of arid and semi-arid tracts supply considerable amounts of timber, fuel and fodder. However, with ever increasing human and livestock population pressure during the last half century, deforestation has reached an alarming stage. -

Los resultados evi- denciaron diferencias en los parámetros morfométricos de las semillas; al mismo tiem- po las variables estudiadas permitieron separar las procedencias mediante el análisis multivariado. -

Abstract This work aims to assess geothermal power potential in identified high enthalpy geothermal areas in the Chilean Andes, based on reservoir temperature and volume. In addition, we present a set of highly favorable geothermal areas, but without enough data in order to quantify the resource. Information regarding geothermal systems was gathered and ranked to assess Indicated or Inferred resources, depending on the degree of confidence that a resource may exist as indicated by the geoscientific information available to review. Resources were estimated through the USGS Heat in Place method. A Monte Carlo approach is used to quantify variability in boundary conditions. -

Newly described outcrops, excavations and sediment cores from the region of Última Esperanza, Magalla- nes, contain tephra derived from the large late-glacial explosive R1 eruption of the Reclús volcano in the Andean Austral Volcanic Zone. New radiocarbon dates associated to these deposits refine previous estimates of the age, to 14.9 cal kyrs BP (12,670±240 14C yrs BP), and volume, to >5 km3, of this tephra. The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of R1 also place constraints on the evolution of the ice-dammed proglacial lake that existed east of the cordillera in this area between the termination of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the Holocene. -
