She attended college in To- Author 6 kyo, Japan before moving to the U.S. and currently lives in Massa- Jeff Kinney chusetts. Motoko wanted to become a storyteller because it combines The Two 6 her two favorite things; reading and acting. She has been featured at Life Savers the U.S. National Storytelling Festival and was on an episode of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. The first folktale she told to us was Gombei Ask Tora 7 the Goose Catcher. In the story he learns how the geese feel when he traps them. He learns empathy. Empathy is when you can feel some- one else’s feelings. Motoko told us about the heroism of people dur- Puerto Rico’s ing the Japanese tsunami and earthquake of 2011. Finally, she told Rainforest, El 8 Yunque Hatchiro Bay. It was about a boy who becomes a giant and saves a village. Maloney School would like to thank Motoko for coming to share her stories. We all enjoyed the presentation. Arigato, Motoko! The Magical Lands of Disney World by Natalie DeLuca and Lucas Balikian Ever wonder for a good place to go for the summer? How about Orlando, Florida? There are lots of fun and exciting places in the Orlando area, including Walt Disney World. There are four theme parks such as Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, and Animal Kingdom. They are filled with fun rides, delicious restaurants, and playful characters running around the parks. Here is some information about the parks in Disney. Epcot It has two fun parks, Future World and World Showcase. Future World features how technology has changed over the years. In World Showcase, it features 11 countries including United States, Japan, Italy, France and the United Kingdom. The famous landmark in Epcot is the great ball of AT&T. It is located in Fu- ture World and it looks like a giant golf ball. Inside it is a ride that shows how technology has changed over the years. Hollywood Studios In Hollywood Studios there are eight sections such as, Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, Sunset Boulevard, Streets of America, Commissary Lane, Pixar Place, Mickey Avenue, and Animation Courtyard. The famous landmark in Hollywood Studios is Wizard Mickey’s hat. It is a giant blue hat covered in yellow stars. Magic Kingdom In Magic Kingdom you can become a swash-buckling pirate and zoom through space on the exhilarat- ing and fast-pace ride Space Mountain. It is very dark, which makes it seem much scarier and you never know when the next twist or turn is. Watch fireworks light up the sky over Cinderella`s Castle and explore the excit- ing six worlds of Magic Kingdom including Adventureland, Frontierland, Tomorrowland and more! The beau- tiful Cinderella`s Castle is the very famous landmark of Magic Kingdom and Disney itself. Animal Kingdom Animal Kingdom is one of the largest animal theme parks in the world. It is home to more than 1,700 animals across 250 species. You can explore the wild lands such as, Dinoland, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Africa, and Asia. A famous point in Animal Kingdom is The Tree of Life. It is covered in hundreds of wood carved animals including, bugs, tigers, elephants, and lions. So, now that you have all of this information about Disney World, do you think you want to go? It doesn’t matter if you go for one month, two weeks, or even just one day, it will still be the best experi- ence of your life! Pictures by Hannah Lavenski Baseball Hall of Fame by Sean O’Donnell. After a few years, Jeff moved to New England. He currently lives in Mas- sachusetts with his two sons and his wife. Jeff Kinney wrote eight books. His ninth book is coming out in November and it’s called The Long Haul. Most of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series books are located in the Maloney Library. Check them out!! Call Number: FIC KIN. I find these books really interesting. I have read all of them! I like Jeff Kinney be- cause he makes a lot of children laugh, including me. The situations in the series are mostly comical. He turned three of these books into movies, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules , and Dog Days . The Cabin Fe- ver movie will be released in November. We are looking forward to more interesting books to come in the se- ries. The Two Life Savers by Nathan Meglio & Sara Way The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is an origination that raises money for kids with childhood cancer. This foundation was founded in 1999. The idea came to life when Tim Kenny, John Bender, and Edna McDonnell came up with the idea to give back to their community because of their own good fortune. To raise money, shavees, people who shave their heads donate money to the foundation by designing their fund- raisers online. Two of our fellow Maloney students James and Michael Cipriano shaved their heads for this cause. James and Michael shaved their heads to raise money for childhood cancer. Their father came up with the idea of shaving their heads. This event was held in Watertown, CT at Ordinary Joe`s. James and Mi- chael believe that they will shave their heads again for this cause. They felt like it was the right thing to do, they are very proud of what they did to help others. Maloney students do things all the time to help others, but this is just one of the many of them. So keep doing what you’re doing and show Paw Pride.

Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. Fans eager- ly await the Nationals’ first home game of the 2019 fall classic Friday night as the team attempts to em- ulate the 1924 Washington Senators, winners over the New York Giants in seven thrilling games. Many fans know that aging Walter Johnson, one of the greatest pitchers in major league base- ball history, won game seven in relief after losing his two starts earlier in the ‘24 series. Others are familiar with Leon Allen “Goose” Goslin, the Sen- ators’ young slugging left fielder; 34-year-old Sam Rice, their stellar right fielder; and Bucky Harris, the young player-manager second baseman – all of whom were destined for the Baseball Hall of Fame. • Challenging Nostalgia and Performance Metrics in Baseball
Challenging nostalgia and performance metrics in baseball Daniel J. Eck March 28, 2018 Abstract In this writeup, we show that the great old time players are overrated relative to the great players of recent time and we show that performance metrics used to compare players have substantial era biases. In showing that the old time players are overrated, no individual statistics or era adjusted metrics are used. Instead, we provide substantial evidence that the composition of the eras themselves are drastically different. In particular, there were significantly fewer eligible MLB players available in the older eras of baseball. As a consequence, we argue that ESPN’s greatest MLB players of all time list includes too many old time players in their top 25 and many performance metrics fail to adequately compare players across eras. 1 Introduction When one looks at the raw or advanced baseball statistics, one is often blown away by the accomplishments of old time baseball players. The greatest players from the old eras of major league baseball produced mind- boggling numbers. As examples, see Babe Ruth’s batting average and pitching numbers, Honus Wagner’s 1900 season, Tris Speaker’s 1916 season, Walter Johnson’s 1913 season, Ty Cobb’s 1911 season, Lou Gehrig’s 1931 season, Rogers Hornsby’s 1925 season, and many others. The accomplishments achieved by players during these seasons are far beyond what recent players produce and it seems, at first glance, that players from the old eras were vastly superior to the players that play in more modern eras. But, is this true? Are the old time ball players actually superior? In this paper, we investigate whether or not the old time baseball players are overrated and whether or not the recent baseball players are underrated.
