During the course, students will learn improvisation techniques on their own instruments and how that technique can be used in a solo or ensemble setting. Soloing techniques will be taught by musical modes and musical keys so that the student performers will feel more confident and prepared in their playing. Students will also learn basic techniques of jazz arranging and re- harmonization. For Non-Majors For the non-major, Jazz Theory and Improvisation I will serve as an introduction to improvisation, soloing, and arranging with jazz techniques. For non-majors, this course is developed to help those who want to better understand and develop their ability in improvisation techniques on their own instruments and how that technique can be used in a solo or ensemble setting. Basic soloing techniques will be taught by musical modes and musical keys so that the student performers will feel more confident and prepared in their playing. Students will also learn basic techniques of jazz arranging and re-harmonization. During this course, majors will learn the techniques of jazz soloing, extended harmony, and basic jazz composing techniques. Specifically, the study of blues scales and ii / V / I progressions are included within the curriculum. The student will synthesize basic jazz scales into effective jazz solos. Students must play an instrument. Supplies Personal instrument (if non-piano) Competencies and Performance Standards 1. Develop knowledge of jazz chords, modes, substitutions, and thirteenth chords. Learning objectives What you will learn as you master the competency: a. Identify notes in standard jazz chords and modes of the major scale. b. Apply basic chord substitution and understands its function within the music. c. Apply mode and chord knowledge to jazz improvisation. d. Construct thirteenth chords and apply them to the jazz improvisation. Performance Standards Competence will be demonstrated: o in class assignments, exercises, and projects o in written and oral quizzes and exams Performance will be satisfactory when: o learner identifies notes in jazz chords and modes of the major scale o learner applies basic chord substitution and understands its function within the music o learner applies mode and chord knowledge to jazz standards and improvisation o learner constructs thirteenth chords and apply them to jazz standards improvisation 2. Learn several jazz standards that vary in style, tempos, key, and rhythm. Learning objectives What you will learn as you master the competency: a. Identify jazz chordal progressions and their function within the music. b. Perform appropriately and accentuate reoccurring motifs. c. Expand on reharmonization and new rhythms. d. Perform notes accurately and in tune. Synthesize personal expression in the jazz idiom.
