AUGHAMORE ON THE RISE PINATUBO PASSES By Amy Lynam DEWHURST TEST This has been a standout year for Aughamore Stud, both in the sales ring and on the race track. Run by brothers Laurence and Michael Gleeson, the breeding and consigning operation based outside Mullingar in County Westmeath has quietly been making a name for itself by preparing yearlings to the highest level. The Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale marked a sort of coming of age for the brothers, with many taking notice of the calibre of individuals they had brought to the sale in their third year there. Their draft consisted of three pinhooks. The first-crop Territories colt was bought as a foal by Hamish Macauley and Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock for 20,000gns, while Macauley signed for a first-crop daughter of Kodi Bear in February for i25,000 and a colt by proven sire Dandy Man cost i35,000 at the same sale. Pinatubo turns back Arizona in the Dewhurst | racingfotos.com From humble beginnings, their pinhooks produced a median of ,80,000 and average of ,66,333--just ,600 off the average By Tom Frary returned by the established and ultra-successful Yeomanstown With the ground riding softer than it had for him throughout Stud. Cont. AHe was spectacular last time, but on this ground you were never going to get a performance like that,@ he explained. AHe really did show his brilliance today, as the ground is tough. There were some proper horses in there who brought good form to the table and it was a different test for him--a stamina test. He made up the ground on Arizona very easily and is a jockey=s dream. He=s a fast horse with a quick action, but he also has a great mind and only the brilliant ones can overcome ground like today.@ Appleby added, AHe=s all heart and I was confident even though he didn=t travel into it as well as he can. It is testament to the horse, as the ground is soft and it=s fantastic to get the result. Horses like him that lower themselves into the ground can get caught out in the dip here, so I told William to hold on to him as long as he could. It was nice that he was galloping out late on and being authoritative and it=s great for all the team and Sheikh Mohammed who is here. Thankfully, he=s not let anybody down and at the end of the day I think these were the best around that he beat here. He=s danced every dance and we are learning as much about his characteristics as the viewing public as he shows nothing at home and just sleeps and eats. We haven=t decided where he will winter yet, but it=s a nice discussion to have and I=d be happy to start in the Guineas without a prep race.@

THE SHUKA SHO GOES ON Tokyo Racecourse may have cancelled its weekend cards in anticipation of Typhoon Hagibis, but the show goes on at Kyoto Racecourse some 450km to the west, where the G1 Shuko Sho, the final jewel of the Japanese Fillies= Triple Crown, features. Curren Bouquetd=or (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) has just two wins to her credit, but the daughter of the Scat Daddy mare Solaria has never been out of the money in seven starts. Picking up a black-type win in the Listed Sweetpea S. in Tokyo on Apr. 28, she outran huge odds three weeks later when a neck second in the Yushun Himba. Given a summer break thereafter, she was third on return in the G3 Shion S. over this trip behind Passing Through (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}). A pair of progressive fillies to keep an eye on are Espoir (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) and Satono Damsel (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). CAMBIER PARC MAKES SANTA ANITA: RACETRACK COMMUNITY UNITES TO RESHAPE NARRATIVE by Dan Ross THINGS EVEN BETTER To the intermittent swagger of a five-person Banda group and fitful claxons of passing cars, Santa Anita's racetrack community FOR BEST gathered outside the facility's grounds Saturday in a bid to interrupt the more incessant drumbeat of bad news hounding the sport this year. "We just want to confront the false narrative that animal rights protestors have been espousing," said Oscar de la Torre, the coordinator of the event. Not that de la Torre is a backstretch worker himself. He runs a non-profit youth center in the Los Angeles city of Santa Monica, but his uncle, Juan Palos, was a groom at Hollywood Park until the facility closed in 2013, after which Palos moved in with his nephew's family, said de la Torre. Some 25 months on from the beginnings of that relationship with the daughter of Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill (Point Given), that filly--now named Cambier Parc-- added Saturday=s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. presented by Lane=s End to her previous success in the GI Del Mar Oaks Aug. 17. QE II Challenge Cup cont.

AWe talked about [the race strategy] in the paddock,@ said trainer Chad Brown, who won last year=s race with >TDN Rising Star= Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) and in 2012 with Dayatthespa (City Zip). AThere wasn=t a lot of pace in the race. We know from her works--we=ve used her as a lead horse sometimes in her works, and she=s good that way. I gave [jockey John Velazquez] the option to go to the lead, and he took it. She really responded.@ Off without incident from the two hole, Cambier Parc seized the advantage and took her seven rivals along at a modest tempo, with Her Majesty The Queen=s Magnetic Charm (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) prompting whatever pace there was from second. Godolphin=s G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches winner Castle Lady (Ire) (Shamardal) enjoyed the run of the race from the box seat underneath Mickael Barzalona. Switched off nicely on the engine, Cambier Parc got the opening three-quarters of a mile in 1:14.41 and managed to pinch a break when Magnetic Charm called it a day in upper stretch. Clear entering the final furlong, Cambier Parc was able to hold sway as Castle Lady gained inches late. Princesa Carolina (Tapit) sat a midfield trip and stayed on for a never-nearer third, just ahead of the winner=s stablemate Cafe Americano (Medaglia d=Oro). AWhen she got to the lead, she relaxed really well,@ said Velazquez, winning his fifth QE II and third since 2014 (Crown Queen, Time and Motion). She relaxed in front. She had plenty to come running in the lane. Once she got to the lead, she relaxed and she opened up a length, a length and a half, and she decided to wait for the horses. I had to keep reminding her to keep running. I didn=t want to get surprised by another horse on the outside. I think if another horse got closer, she would have gone again.@ Cont. p4

Pattison Canadian International S. cont. Desert Encounter spotted his rivals some three to four lengths when walking out of the stalls, and $1.15-1 favorite Ziyad (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) was sent straight into the lead by Maxime Guyon. They slowed the pace right down, passing the halfway point in 1:16.93 as they raced in three pairs into the final six furlongs. Guyon upped the tempo just a bit into the far turn and still held the call as they neared the stretch, but Atzeni was keeping his powder dry atop Desert Encounter, waiting for the right moment to commence his rally. Shaken up at the quarter pole, the veteran came with a two-path rally to be on the back of Ziyad, was angled outside of the pacesetter at the furlong grounds and outfooted Alounak (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) for a very impressive score. AComing into the straight, obviously, I had options,@ said Atzeni. AI could have gone around them, but I decided to go inside. I thought the French horse was the one to beat and I tracked him up through the straight and picked him up very nicely. He was the best horse in the race.@
